Since I had already gotten an Android phone (LG G2) as a result of all of this iOS7 upgrade mess, I went ahead and upgraded my iPhone 4 just to see what 7.1.1 was like (I never planned to use the phone again as a phone anyway). As expected I hate the look, even after playing around with the settings for quite some time. Sorry Apple, I still like your computers but I expect that I have bought my last iPhone. You should take a very serious look at the way that you do iOS upgrades and allow at least a little flexibility. But do I expect that? Never!

I bought my niece a Nexus 5. I like the phone. I don't really care if it's "just" plastic. It feels good and feels like it's about the right size. Google Now is working pretty good. Gruber linked to an article where someone argued that Google is becoming better at design faster than Apple is becoming better at services. That's exactly how I feel.

I have thought about switching to Android devices and for me, the force upgrade to ios7 is the tipping point. Not to mention the lost storage that software upgrades is downloaded onto the phone/pad.

Now that Android devices are matured and performs comparatively well with iphones, my next phone will be an Android. Bye Apple and I won't regret!

The real joke is that they proudly revealed in their presentation today that like 80% of the devices are running iOS 7, but they didn't mention that users are forced to upgrade, be it due to FaceTime, goto fail security bug, loss of space, or constantly nagging one-way-ticket upgrade buttons.

Freedom of Choice

I have an iphone 3, I choose to keep it because it works well for what I need.
I can choose to use facetime on my macbook pro2011. I should be able to choose what I need to use if I have ios6 on another device.
Apple beware! Honour the investments made by thousands who bought devices with the promise that it was the latest and greatest thing. I believed then and now I'm told,'Upgrade or lose'? That doesn't make sense. My iphone 3 cost me at least 600 dollars!!!
If I want to use old software and devices, then that's my choice because that's what works for me.
The throw away mindset will drive many to other alternatives. Be smarter apple and update the IOS6 facetime certificate. Dead easy.

The iPhone 3G and 3GS don't have front facing camera, or FaceTime, so surely your post is moot?!

True that. But I would rather go the 'we force you to update' way, instead of staring at the same OS forever, just because I like it more.

You'd rather be forced to upgrade than to stay with what you like?

iPhone 3?

I'm assuming you pressed the wrong button and meant iPhone 4 (the earliest iPhone that supported FaceTime).

Apple are honouring your investment. FaceTime still works, as long as you use the version of the operating system that Apple supports on that device.

Apple no longer support iOS6 on your device. Therefore if something breaks, you're SOL. That's something they are entitled to do. Otherwise would they be forced to support PowerMacs and Mac OS X Tiger still??

It's the same argument that those who won't migrate from Snow Leopard are using. "Whine, we're not getting security updates anymore". Tough, move with the times.

Apple broke something themselves so you'd think they'd be ethical enough to do things a bit differently to fix it rather than just stick to the usual blind requirement of just upgrading to get a fix. They even have a fix for iOS 6 too just one they decided not to release for iPhone 4.

They don't support iOS 6 on the iPhone 4 any more. They offer a free fix. If the upgrade cost then I would understand, but it is free of charge.

if you dont update it costs around 3 gig of your device and if you do update the cost can range from unsupported apps to a much slower device.

but yeah its great that they didnt charge you for it.

They don't offer a free fix, they offer a different parodic than the one you have that doesn't have those issues that they themselves created. That's different than simply offering a fix to the issues they themselves broke. That's like a car manufacturer having an issue with the steering wheel and having a recall for it but in order to just fix that steering issue they would also require changing the seats and all of the interior of the car to something other than what you wanted and originally paid for. Doesn't really work out when you look at it from that kind of perspective.

Well it's not because you like something, that you should stick with it forever, at least for upgrades. Sometimes we have to open our mind for something new. I agree that it should be better that apple won't force doing it and that we should eventually do the upgrade ourselves when we're ready for it. But sometimes we're afraid of change, because we're used to it, which is exactly the case with major UI upgrades like iOS 7, and for something like that, Apple forcing us could be that final push in the convincing process some might need. And you can never do good for everyone anyway.

They didn't create the issue themselves. A security certificate expired. FFS

Also. It isn't up to you or me what version of iOS supports. It's down to Apple. It is their decision and their decision alone. They don't support iOS6 on your device anymore. You have 3 choices.

1. Proceed without support. Things may stop working. As you have found out.

2. Update. You get used to iOS 7. Yes there are things I prefer in 6, however the muscle memory changes and you adapt.

3. You vote with your feet. If enough people did that, Apple would have to think about their strategy again.

Sorry, but if anyone wants to use what works for them they don't need to be convinced or pushed to use something else. It's their own business and no one should be involved in convincing them otherwise.

They created the stupid SSL bug that left a huge security hole for everyone for a long time which in turn led to this issue on devices that didn't get the fix for that SSL security issue they created. So yes it's their own fault.

Well, this finally bit me, or rather my uncle.

Experience with another iPhone4 shows iOS 7 is hard, makes is sluggish, wanted to keep performance up so keep it on iOS 6.

No choice now.
(Upgraded to 5S, was planning to pass the 4 on)

Apple is beginning to remind me of Microsoft.

Interestingly, my iPad 3 does not seem affected (different reason I could not update)

IOS 7 will soon go through the same thing. OOPS we broke your certificate so, update so you have to deal with our mediocre performance like everyone else!

These people too stubborn to upgrade to iOS 7 remind me of those who were too stubborn to upgrade to windows 95 from 3.11. They couldn't stay on 3.11 forever either. No matter how much they hated the new versions of windows since then. Same theory applies here. You eventually just have to upgrade to do want you want/need it to do. If there is anyone out there still using windows 3.11, I don't here them complaining that they can't play the latest World of Warcraft expansion lol.

Might apply in 25 years or so, but not quite yet.
