I'm still waiting for background process indicators.

Essentially, if an app is actively navigating (Like maps or Navigon) it gets a little circle icon (Like the notification number in the top right) in the top left with the navigation arrow. Likewise they could add ones for general background processing (a gear), background downloads (a spinning activity indicator?), music (a quarter note) and any of the other "active" background modes.

This would help immensely to help users distinguish apps that are actively using resources in the background versus ones that just have a saved state. Also there are still many apps that don't implement background downloads, and so when I leave the app during a download the only way to tell if it is continuing is by opening the app and checking if the progress bar has moved.

what's wrong with the universally known play symbol for music that's been there forever?

"Answering Machine" feature from iChat in Leopard Beta

In 2006 Apple had a feature in "iChat" called "Answering Machine". This allowed the user to leave a video or audio away message, and for the users' friends to leave one in return. This was before the iPhone, when it was merely a rumor, so many developers were curious as to what Apple intended (this was when OS X had bi-weekly DMG's that required burning to a DVD and a fresh install per OS X beta, thus enabling a cleaner debugging system).

Needless to state, it never made the light of day. Presently, with so many FaceTime enabled mobile devices and the Messages app, "Answering Machine" would be a great feature. I know of a few deaf individuals who would benefit greatly by the ability to leave a video message.

First mention (2006, "Leopard" beta's):

Leopard iChat Answering Machine:

The new iChat answering preference tab allows users to record a Video greeting to serve as an answering message when users are away from their desk. The caller may then leave a message. At this time, there only appears to be partial functionality implemented.

The ability to record video-clips has previously been suggested as a tie in to the iPhone to provide a "call ahead" feature.

Second mention (2008, "Snow Leopard" days):

Apple Still Pursuing iChat 'Answering Machine' Technology?

A patent application published today reveals that Apple may still be working on a video "answering machine" technology for inclusion with iChat. The technology made a brief partial appearance in early OS X Leopard developer seeds in December 2006, but was omitted from the finished product.

I've written a thread a while back that gained interest, enough that some wrote Apple to include this as a possible feature for Messages/FaceTime in OS X and iOS. I think this would be a fantastic idea, and strongly recommend that those who agree do the same. Have a great weekend everyone!

While these are all welcomed additions, can't help but to be disappointed by the improvements that weren't made.

- Multitask switching would greatly benefit from an Expose style switcher (especially on iPad).
I feel that on the iPad, the multi-touch gestures to invoke the multi-tasking bar or to switch between apps are fairly good already. On the iPhone, the double-click is much more annoying.

I'm not sure I would say there is a fanaticism to detail. This is more of a case of Apple doing something clever for the sake of being clever. Attention to detail would be if they noticed something was a pixel off and fixed it. Changing something that wasn't broken to something that has a "cool" effect is something but it's not attention to detail. Attention to detail would be fixing Bluetooth File Exchange, which still in 10.7.4, has not been fixed. It's an advertised feature of Lion, yet the entire UI was broken by the Lion update and has never been touched by Apple's hands as far as I can tell during the Snow Leopard to Lion transition. Attention to detail would be making fullscreen Pages mode actually fill the screen and give you a toolbar, rather than presenting a document letterboxed on all sides with no toolbar.

If anything, I think Apple's attention to detail has decreased over the last 5 years when it comes to software.

I'd have to argue with you here... It is much easier to find faults than it will ever be to find these types details. Noticing something that interferes with your workflow is much more jarring than a detail like the reflective light mentioned above.

Apple's software is not perfect and never has been. There may be a few more things missing or not fixed, but Apple's breadth of software has grown over the years, so this is bound to happen. There are going to be more things that might seem unfixed or not completely fleshed out, but to say that their attention to detail has decreased is false.

The beauty of Apple products is the details that make them a pleasure to use, because they aren't directly noticeable, meaning they don't get in the way of normal functionality. Superfluous, sure, but a nuisance, not at all. I think the scope of Apple's software today doesn't allow us to notice all the little things as we did before. And it's much easier to find faults because they are more "in your face."

Is there any news of whether apple will support mass transit directions again? It's very odd they don't even mention it.

Usually apple drops legacy technology but with this map update there is nothing but legacy transit (automobile) options

Apple stated they are going to leave the details to 3rd parties to add to Maps. This makes Apple's mapping solution a little lacking at first, but very powerful in the end. Making it an open platform for location information allows a multitude of information to be presented within a map.

Think of downloading a map for an amusement park, national park, bus stops/schedules, points of interests, tourist spots, etc. The possibilities are endless, but there will need to be a build up... we have a few more months before it goes live, wait and see before you get bent out of shape.

I sure do hope that Google will release their own Maps app for iOS, I would hate to loose walking directions in cities.

Yes that would work (And there is the icon in the status bar, but this is more for knowing which applications are being used.)

The main reason I would want it is to know when I am switching off wifi when something is background downloading or when I am low on battery and an app is doing some unnecessary processing in the background.

I can't find anything about shadows - I even did a Find on Page. We're not talking about the reflections on the volume slider are we?

The last video in the macrumors news posts is all about the shadows. Yes, that's exactly what were talking about. lol

I like this line that I found on the slide => "IPv6 support for Wi-Fi and LTE"

The LTE being the important thing to take note of. I think everyone already assumes that the next round of iDevices are going to include an LTE option (phones won't have an option). This is one of the first official documents that I've seen of Apple confirming LTE support in iOS.

This is great for me since AT&T has launched it's LTE network in my area and I've been off contract since August 2011. So I'm ready for an upgrade, but I'm holding off for the new iPhone.

It just sucks that AT&T is so stingy with their data plans!!! LTE is great.... but um, it makes it so much easier and attractive to use your data... and go over.

I really wish ATT and Verizon would double their data allotments... but as long as people flock to them, they won't because they have no need to be competitive. For now.

When they debuted their new maps last week, they announced they were going to develop an app for all platforms (ios, WP7-8, etc) so no need to fear.

They totally knew far in advance they were getting dropped from native support in IOS. Will probably be available before IOS 6 is.

I despise the Google Maps app in IOS, but the walking directions was a great feature I used a lot when traveling.

Has anyone tested iOS6's performance in a 3GS, is it usable or is it even slower than iOS5?

It's almost identical to iOS 5 with the exception of opening message notifications from the lock screen. A small number of apps either wont load or punt you back to the home screen.

One thing that does annoy is my battery seems to drain much faster though. I don't know if iOS 5 did this but when you wake the screen the gps compass pops up and this won't help the battery much.

Mass transit directions would be great. The problem is likely that mass transit authorities don't provide up to date route or schedule information in a way that the app could use it reliably. With that info it would be an absolutely fantastic feature.

However, calling automobile navigation "legacy" technology is pretty dense.

Outside of bigger cities, mass transit barely exists, especially in the US. Eliminating directions for people with cars would be the stupidest thing I could possibly imagine doing with a maps/navigation app.

Hmm. All Mass Transit has this information online. Some agencies even make it accessible in a way that would work with an app. When you think about it, how many major metro areas are there in the US? One person could manage this information manually fairly easily for transit companies that don't feed this info.

There are already several apps that do a good job with transit schedules, and ways developers can tap into transit databases.

MOST mass transit has GPS enabled on their buses and the like to let dispatch monitor where they are, delays, etc. Even that info could eventually be used with third parties for an app letting someone know eta's and such, while merging traffic info in their too.

Waste of engineering resources? It's art, it is what separates Apple from all others. ESPECIALLY ANDROID, the touch and use experience of every android phone I've ever touched is so bad it drives me insane. The worst is that choppy scrolling!!!
And it probably took one kind of OCD engineer to do it, over his lunch hour. What's to complain about?!

App Store/iTunes

I know someone has probably already said this, but the new store layouts are really cool. I remember thinking in march that the nicest upgrade to the new :apple:tv other that 1080p was the new stores. Now these stores are universal and I love it.

could apple please make up their mind about what UI color they want?

black, silver, blue its all over the place

To bad these are hardware restrictions, now I really feel like I need to upgrade from my iPad 1...oh wait? I rather not but any iPad again because I will probably get screwed over again by Apple.

I know how you feel. 8 years ago I bought a car, it was top of the line, the most expensive model, it had everything, heated leather seats, power sun roof. And After I bought it, the very next year. The manufacturer added GPS to the exact same model for the same price. I tried to go have it installed by them, but they said it would cost $2000 to have it installed. They screwed me over bad. Since then I've never bought a new car, so I know exactly what I'm not getting.

My suggestion for you to not get screwed over by apple is to wait until the 2013 iPad comes out, then buy the 2012 model, and you'll know what you're not getting, and never plan on updating your OS. That way you won't get that "I'm getting screwed over feeling"

Download Backgrounder and Remove Background.
Remove Background will close ALL multitasking tray items in one fell swoop.
Backgrounder will terminate processes of any app when minimized...clse an app...and the process is terminated....
With these 2 items, you wont need process indicators.

Also, my battery life is so sweet with Backgrounder terminating processes. Its so funny when people say JBing slows down your system and eats your battery....quite the contrary when you have the right Cydia apps installed..these will immensely prolongue your battery and make your system faster...

I am still waiting for a MAJOR revamp of the horrid, atrocious, ridiculous iPad Music app...any news on that?

Don't believe it? Check this link:

Amen to that. Frankly, it's shocking they shipped something so bad instead of just sticking with the old app until they could get the new one to a usable state.

Any changes to the terrible music app on the iPad? Including the displaying embedded lyrics once again? That's really the ONLY thing I want from iOS 6.

Agreed here as well, it's pretty unbelievable they broke lyrics and haven't fixed them yet. Especially since they still work on iPhone.

Google maps on iOS5 has it now, and it works great in Brussels - I love using it to find bus/tram routes, and it has often suggested routes using connections that I would never have known about or considered, saving me a lot of time.

If it's missing in iOS6 then I'll be severely disappointed.

It works pretty well. Not a major drop in speed. Better than iOS 5.

Or probably because IPv4 is on its way out, and IPv6 is going to be the future.

Not for a looooong time buddy.

So no one noticed that iCloud.com has the same changing reflection effects as the iOS6 Music player buttons, e.g. in the login box?

It's Apple's way of making for a consistent user experience.

I did notice this. Now if only we could make it turn when I turned my laptop...

That looks horrible. I really hate it when companies try to fix something that's already perfect.

YouTube's new layout really destroyed my interest in my YouTube channel. AIM's new layout on iOS has made me switch to IM+, which can use AIM. Verizon decided to "revamp" their remote app on iOS, and now it hardly works. Apple utterly ruined iMovie HD in 2008, making me stick to the 2006 version. I've heard bad stories about Final Cut Pro X. And worst of all........ Windows Vista........:eek::eek::eek: (OK XP was far from perfect, but Vista makes it look perfect)

My main concern is whether the engineers/designers at Apple are even noticing that or prioritizing such a revamp. I just can't believe how bad that app is, even if just to play a DAMN list of songs without any playlists!
