Yes I think that it is widely known that iOS 7 yields less battery life than iOS 6 did. I have a 5S, so I had no choice upon purchase![]()
No, its not widely known. And the battery drain is simply not normal. IOS7 should be lighter weight.

I usually get a solid 8-10 hours of usage easily on my phone. iPhone 5 is probably at about 85% of its original battery capacity at this point? Maybe it isn't the updates that are killing battery but the life of the battery itself.
Haven't noticed any issues with my 5C, 5S or iPad retina mini.....battery life across the board is as good as ever - no changes either way.
As good as iOS7 ever was, which is hardly a good benchmark. It's a bloated battery hog.
Eh, I get plenty of life out of my battery - whether iOS 7 was bad or not, its been plenty good enough for me.
Easily make it the whole day on a charge - most of the time I'm plugging in at night with 60% left.
Really haven't noticed any problems moving from iOS 6 to 7. Or to 7.1.
Well if hardly using your phone and so long as it makes it through the day is sufficient for you, who am I to argue. I use my phone a HELL of a lot and to lose 2-3 hours of runtime each day is a big deal for me. I have an iPhone 5, which is especially affected by iOS7. I mean, it runs the o/s fine but the battery life is abysmal when compared to how much I got with iOS6.
The i5 battery drain is VERY well documented. Some claim not to experience it but every single one of my friends has the problem and ARS Technica proved the problem to exist months ago with benchtests. It is absolutely a problem for a hell of a lot of iPhone 5 users. Two devices got a raw deal with iOS7, the iPhone4 (understandably) struggles for speed and the iPhone5 (unforgivably) struggles with battery life. These are facts and yet Apple chooses to ignore them.
Lol.....right, because the only POSSIBLE way for me to get good battery life is to NOT use the device.
I'll do a check on my wife's 5 later, but she hasn't complained about it and she constantly forgets to charge her phone overnight.
Truth is, like others have mentioned, you're battery might just be getting older and may not be holding as much of a charge. Perhaps iOS 7 isn't to blame....
I'm not sure what you expect Apple to do about it. Somehow my 5C (with the same internals as the 5) lasts plenty long. Only difference is my 5C is less than a year old and your 5 is likely 1.5+ years old.
My i5 is 7 months old and, coincidentally, gave me 2-3 hours more runtime prior to iOS7 being installed. As soon as iOS7 went onto my phone, decent battery life went out the window. I'm a seasoned iPhone user and always do DFU installs via iTunes, never OTA. I also have every single battery draining setting toggled off. Nobody could get any more juice out of my i5 than I already do.
It is VERY well documented that iOS7 doesn't agree with the i5 when it comes to battery life.
Oh and I never said that you didn't use your phone but if you go to bed with it at 60%, then you haven't used it all that much. I fully charge mine twice a day, every day.
My i5 is only 7 months old and was returning stellar battery life under iOS6. My woes started immediately when iOS7.0 hit my phone and nothing has changed with each subsequent update. My battery is ever so slightly worse with 7.1 but it is negligible. iOS7 *period* slayed my battery life and this constant charging isn't going to do much for the longevity of my battery is it?
If we could buy genuine Apple batteries on the internet then that would be ok, but they are all copies which are badged 'OEM'. I replaced one in my 3GS and although it improved on the previous battery life of my old and worn battery, it was still nowhere near as good as the new Apple one had been.
Whatever man. Not going to argue with you. I can tell you all my friends who use iOS 7 don't have a problem and you can tell me all of yours do.
I googled it and found plenty of articles - but try googling iOS 6 Battery Drain. There's articles on how to manage your battery life, articles about various versions of iOS 6 draining people's batteries....
Point being - this happens every software release. People invariably complain about battery life drains. Then magically, everything's fine. One comment I read mentioned it had to do with the update process and after a time, the battery life normalized. No idea if that's true as I never experienced a drop to being with.
But, mark my words. There will be people complaining about how iOS 8 ruined their battery life as well. Its just one of those things that never change. For the majority of us, it works just fine - which brings me again to the question: What do you expect Apple to do about it?
EDIT: Have you taken it into a store? Expecting Apple to give you a brand new 5S is absurd.....but to me it sounds like there's something wrong with your phone and I could see them replacing it with another 5. I had an issue where my processor wouldn't sleep and it drained my battery like crazy (iP5, iOS 6) - they swapped it out no problem.
Why is it absurd? My phone was one month old and running perfectly before iOS7 came out. One month old! I have been waiting and waiting (very patiently) for a fix.
7.1 wasn't that fix.
As it is very well documented that the i5 struggles with battery life on iOS7, why on earth would I want to swap my handset for a refurbed version with the same battery problems?
One thing is for sure, before my 12 month warranty expires, I will definitely be visiting an Apple store.
Including every x.x.x update, I cannot recall one single Apple update where people haven't immediately come rushing to these forums to claim the update "drains the battery faster" after updating.
I've owned every iPhone since 3GS and downloaded every update available to me and have never ever noticed a significant increase and decrease, all have always pretty much got me through the day and charge every night, with the exception of draining far too quickly when travelling.
To me, the battery is the next big change the mobile world needs to see. They can get as thin, light, hi res as they want but someone needs to really "revolutionise" the battery.
But let's not pretend every single time there's a tiny little update that the battery suddenly gets worse otherwise we'd be down to about an hour between each charge with how often people claim it's happened
It's also well documented that many devices have "struggled with battery life" on nearly every iOS update that's been out.....google it. There's TONS of "iOS 6 battery drain" articles....
You're in the minority. However loud you think you and your cohorts are being, you're still a minority. And if you are seeing THAT big a drop off, you SHOULD take it in because I'd bet that something ELSE is wrong.
That you complain here without having even TRIED to take it to Apple is ridiculous.....
And from everything I've read, refurb models are actually the best - they been through more testing than normal versions.
At best, I'd say you should expect to get a 5C.
I took it in to Apple a few months ago and they told me to wait for 7.1, which would fix the problem. They didn't even check my battery, obviously (in my mind) knowing there was a software issue. This time I won't be fobbed off with impending update fixes, that's for sure.
Here's my phone approx 6.5 months ago:

...and here's my phone yesterday:

Were you ACTUALLY using it for the full 5 hours it was off the charger? That looks a lot like my processor issue. Does your device run warm/hot?
Yes, I use it solidly every afternoon. I'm a rescue worker and we spend a lot of our time sat about doing nothing...
Of course not every day is like that but a fair few are.
Sometimes a bad OTA install can cause overheating but mine are always clean installs, there is no overheating with my device at all.
As good as iOS7 ever was, which is hardly a good benchmark. It's a bloated battery hog.
What's your usage like when you aren't using it constantly?
Just curious - as I've said, I had an issue where my processor would never shut off and it ran hot and showed roughly equal standby and usage times even though I wasn't ACTUALLY using the device.
A drop that drastic seems to be the result of something else....or else you're just extremely unlucky.
When did you install 7.1?
Eh, I get plenty of life out of my battery - whether iOS 7 was bad or not, its been plenty good enough for me.
Easily make it the whole day on a charge - most of the time I'm plugging in at night with 60% left.
