What's weird is that it happened earlier this year and I got a replacement iPhone 5 at the Apple Store that wasn't supposed to have this problem. Then the day that iOS 7 Beta 6 came out it suddenly started doing it like crazy. The first time it happened earlier this year it was more gradual. It was perfectly fine the day before Beta 6 came out and then when I installed it the first thing I noticed was difficulty using the sleep/wake button every time I used it. This iPhone has never been dropped or impacted. The one I had replaced had been dropped once while in a protective case and had no visible signs of damage.

I will say that I noticed the button working more from the left side when pressed, which was weird. It feels as though there is one clicking mechanism on the left and another on the right. When I look at the button itself flush with my eye level, it seems as though the right side is sitting lower, and when I gently tap the button with my finger (not a press but a tap) I can hear that the button is slightly loose and it makes a little jiggling sound as though it were not properly seated. So perhaps it's a huge coincidence, but it does seem different than the last time I had this problem.

The unresponsiveness of the lock button since updating is driving me nuts. What I used to do a lot was to push the lock button to display the lock screen to check the time, then push it again before putting it back in my pocket. Since updating, this simple act of checking the time has become a pain, I've had to push the lock button more than 10 time more than once.

As previously noted above, its a hardware problem. For me, the problem started under iOS 6 and got worse overtime. Installed iOS 7 on my iPhone 5 and the problem continued to get worse.'

Took my iPhone into the Apple store here in the US and they Genius immediately swapped it out. Didn't even try to replicate the issue. I started to explain the problem and he stopped me right away saying he'd swap out the phone under warranty.

Had my new (refurbed) phone for a week. Problem has not recurred. The hardware swap resolved it.

But isn't it a bit of a coincidence that I never had the slightest issue. Then, as soon as I've upgraded to iOS 7 I'm hit with this? Not to mention the phone is only a couple months old.

It's not an iOS 7 issue, it's hardware...it was about 2 months after I got my iPhone 5 last year when it started, so there's similar timing. I also got a replacement under warranty at the Apple store, no hassles, and haven't had the problem since. New one had iOS 6 on it, and iOS 7 since the betas without this issue.

It's just coincidence. Chances are it's a hardware issue.

Let me ask you this...if you push one side of the button, does it work differently? After reading about this on apple support forum, I tried pushing just the left side of button and it consistently worked, right side consistently did nothing, in the middle was inconsistent.

After the 8th press.......

Mine (iphone 5) started to to have the same issue with the button sometimes not working, then it would not work at all using the right hand side of the button so I got used to pressing the left hand side, but alas, that started to play up.

Like previously mentioned by others, this is a well known fault with the phone and as long as it's under 12 months old (unless purchased direct from Apple) they will swap it over with no fuss.

Those limping along putting up with this ...... DON'T!, make a Genius appointment and get it sorted.
(unless it's older than 12 months and purchased through your service provider then your wallet could take a bit of a battering.)

Hmm, yep, left side of the button does seem more responsive. So it looks like another faulty iPhone 5 here. Unfortunately, I didn't get it from an Apple store, it's on a contract... really disappointed with how common this problem must be. Wish I never gave my iPhone 4 away after getting this now... *sigh*

Thanks guys/gals.

What!! I thought I was the only one. I figured it was hardware, and I'd have to live with it.

I guess I'll go ahead and try a full restore of my iPhone 5 to alleviate the problem.

That does not matter...it doesn't matter where you got it from, unless you bought a used one, it is an Apple iPhone, it has a one year warranty, you can go to an Apple store and they will give you a free replacement phone, swap sims and you're good to go. Just be sure you've done a backup and sync before you go, as you'll have to restore your backup to the new phone to get your stuff on it. ...If you don't live near an Apple store, you can possibly do this with your carrier, if not, then you can call Apple and you should be able to get warranty replacement by shipping it.

Again, they won't fix it in the store, it's too involved, they ship 'em out to get them fixed. But, they will give you a replacement.

When you are done trying everything, just take it to an Apple store and get a replacement. This is a known hardware issue. The fact that it has happened to people after putting iOS 7 on their phone is just a coincidence.

I'll say it again, my iPhone 5 had problem with sleep/wake button about 2 months after I got it. I went to Apple store and got a replacement easily, this one has not had an issue, I've had it 10 months.
