I don't understand those who spend big bucks on a iPhone, only to turn around and jailbreak it with apps, where it doesn't even hardly resemble an iPhone anymore. Why not stick with Android if one dislikes the OS enough to want to change it all the time? And then many of the jailbreakers complain when Apple betters their OS, because they can't jailbreak and are stuck.

It is like someone buying a BMW, and then taking it to the shop to get completely redone, where it looks like and sounds like a VW Bug on the inside.

As a current Android owner (Note 4 with Gear VR) I sometimes envy iDevice owners because you guys have the ability to use the latest and greatest iOS version the day the update is released. Hanging on to a old software version in the name of jailbreaking is pretty silly.
And when Apple releases iOS 9 with many enhancements are people going to really hang on to iOS 8? It really makes no sense unless the software runs like garbage on old devices.

----------

I just want my phone to work, and thus far, the 3rd party keyboards are working way better... hoping for the rough edges to be smoothed. I used to care a lot about jailbreaking, but with every release of iOS, there has been less and less reason to do so...

After hacking every Android device in the last 5 years I'm pretty much finished with the rooting/unlocked bootloader game. I got tired of "playing" around with my phone instead of "playing" with my phone. I was crack flashing roms every other day until I realized that I was wasting time.
Today I just want stable software running the latest version.

And yet people still are jailbreaking. Your assumption is premature.

BL.

Those with jailbreaking don't care about security, most of us don't give the f. My financial info in my iPhone is better protected with closed system. Btw, i've been jailbreaking my phones until 2013 after an jailbreak almost destroyed my device.

Indeed. The reasons for jailbreaking are becoming increasingly laughable with each new iOS release. A kid I know jailbreaks so that he can have the flash go off in his pants whenever he gets a text. Now that's useful!

One thing you are forgetting; one of the things that jailbreaking does is provide security. JBers provide it by exposing the holes in the OS, and report those holes to Apple so they are fixed in the next update. Case in point: The evad3rs and TaIG were credited with finding the holes that were patched in iOS updates.

It's a very bad assumption that JBers Jailbreak their iDevices with malicious intent or vindictiveness.

BL.
Tell me who in this thread has said that jailbreakers are malicious? Reading comprehension is key to a good conversation.

Yes, the jailbreak community does us all a favor by finding bugs. By the same token, Apple does us a favor by patching said bugs ASAP to prevent them from being exploited. I have nothing against jailbreakers whatsoever, but I don't expect Apple to leave their holes unpatched.

----------

Many of these features aren't on android phones either.
This statement is flat-out false. Jailbreakers can do nothing that Android mods can't also do. Obviously there are benefits to a broken iPhone vs. Android, but the 'features' that jailbreaks provide are not among them.

----------

So let me get this right....

You want Apple to change its business model of selling devices with closed system that makes them BILLIONS to cater to you????
Correct. Apple should turn it's back on 18 billion dollars and focus on pleasuring the jailbreaking community. People who've never paid a dime for software in their lives. That's a brilliant idea.

I used to care a lot about jailbreaking, but with every release of iOS, there has been less and less reason to do so...

I agree with this - but still, the number of reasons never seems to get down to zero. I still love Activator; I really like having the option of putting five icons in my dock; and I especially love FlipControlCenter's customization options. But it's true that, with each iOS release, Apple does seem to adopt at least one killer feature from the previous version's jailbreak community!

Yeah, not everyone who jailbreaks their phone is a pirate.

I've jailbroken my iOS devices for many years now, a lot of the assumptions from those who have not can be very misinformed. The biggest thing I would like to point out is you're not losing any features when jailbreaking, only gaining. Dire security holes that are usually patched in .x.x updates are almost always available afterwards as a hotfix you can apply from Cydia.

Not only can nay-sayers thank folks who are in the business for finding exploits to open them up to Apple to patch for added security, you can also thank tweak developers for giving Apple ideas of what to introduce to newer versions of iOS (see; quick reply, control center, widgets, etc.)

I am glad Apple is able to use their (jailbreak devs) exploits and ideas to improve their own OS, however I personally would enjoy having the supported option for better customizability but I can understand from Apple's ideals for iOS and for "security" reasons that, if they were to consider that, it's very far off. So that's why I jailbreak, to use Apple's nice hardware and decent OS to customize and adjust how I would best like to use it. I just don't find the same polish on Android OS personally and, being a Mac user, the synchronization is key.

Jailbreaking is definitely not for everyone, but for those who are interested in it would be best to start investigating on the Reddit Jailbreak community page.

To be fair, you took that out of context. They specifically mention Touch ID, apple pay, iMessage and FaceTime being features that bring Android tinkerers to jailbroken iPhones.

I'm one of those tinkerers. I love taking stuff apart and adapting it to my needs. I never owned an iPhone before my iPhone 6, but I disliked how limited I felt using my iPad 2 running iOS 5. This lead me to buying a Galaxy Nexus and a Nexus 4 as my first two smartphones.

Now I'm back to all Apple hardware since I'm able to tweak my iPhone 6 however I want, as well as use iMessage and FaceTime away from my MacBook Pro (and Apple Pay!)

I get the proprietary features AND the freedom to do what I want with the hardware I own (as long as I stay on 8.1.2 until the next jailbreak releases)

This article mentions that a "lingering wifi issue" has been repaired. Does anyone know what that is about?

It's all in the implications, my friend; all in the implications.. such as:

You truly have no clue about jailbreaking. Changing the appearance of the OS is only one aspect of how an iPhone can be altered.

Yeah. That last statement doesn't fit the first. You obviously do have something against jailbreakers. I personally jailbreak my phone for intelliscreenx and f.lux. I also paid for all of my Cydia apps along with a mountain of App Store apps. In fact, I can guarantee that I've spent more than you on software for my phone, both jailbroken and not. Please make an appointment to see a proctologist. He will be able to help you find your head and perform the necessary procedure to remove it.

Jail breaking is fun, but I cant justify doing it anymore. The only thing I really miss is auxo now.

I'm Jailbreaking tonight. I've done it in the past and have never regretted it.

Reasons for doing it on my new iPhone? You know those times when you get an error from trying to download an app over 100MB over cellular or streaming video apps that are restricted to WIFI only? I have unlimited LTE, LET ME USE IT HOW I WANT TO USE IT!

Wtf are you talking about, jailbreaking doesn't make your device any less secure and it's impossible to destroy via jailbreaking, you are beyond misinformed.

> Everyone jailbreaks. iOS becomes as open as Android.
> Everyone figures out they can pirate stuff for free, and install 10000 other app stores than Apple's own. Even those that don't know it's piracy still do it, because "it's in this app store, so it should be legit, right?"
> iOS piracy rates soar.
> Developers realize that it's moot to develop something worth more than 99 cents riddled with ads and IAPs.
> Apple, now without the power of the app store, are now competing directly with specs of other rivals, who have long since upgraded to octacores, 4 GB RAM and 32 MP cameras.

Apple is doomed. Doomed I say! DOOMED! The final nail!

Maximum of 7 days until another random little Chinese group release a new jailbreak anyway

----------

Unless you don't like the latest OS updates which defeats one of the benefits of owning a iDevice.

A lot of people that aren't jailbroken are still on iOS 7 or even 6, same with OS X updates, only 3 people in my college class have updated to Yosemite, including me

And yet people still are jailbreaking. Your assumption is premature.

Not on 8.1.3.

Software developers like to be paid for their software. Apple likes to not get complaints about overheating phones that are overheating because of some jailbreak.

It's commendable of Apple for publicly crediting the Jailbreak team for finding the exploits.

Wtf are you talking about, jailbreaking doesn't make your device any less secure and it's impossible to destroy via jailbreaking, you are beyond misinformed.

The term Jailbreak in itself means that some body broke out. How is that secure?
And nothing is impossible. I wouldn't say that a jail broken phone is 100% bullet proof.

Anyone remember extensions that were prevalent in Macs prior to OSX? There was always issues pertaining to certain extensions that led to lots of wasted time.

What's going on with all the jailbreak-hating?

The reason I jailbreaked my 8.1.2 iPhone 6 is simple:

- Five columns of icons (there is more than enough space, this should've been default).
- Lower-case keys on the keyboard when I type non-capital letters (the 3rd party keyboards don't do this well).
-F.lux (the screen is just to blue and bright at night).
- Disable to turn off the device when it's locked.

That's it.
