Yes, I was supporting you! :) What you say is quite correct. It's very poor design and as I said is leading to a reasonable fear the photos are being shrunk on the cloud.

Understood...you and I are on the same page.

I will respectfully disagree with everything you said.
There is nothing respectful about tossing aside the gift of human intellect and choosing to ignore the truth.

1) This thread is at 170 posts currently, with various accounts of how these services work (or don't work). It is not only me, and it is presumptuous of you to read a single post and assume I am ignorant in any manner.
If you can handle using Pages, Numbers, Keynote, etc. than what makes you think this is so bad? It's exactly the same.

2) There may not be any reason for YOU to want to delete a photo from 1 device. There may be reason for ME to want to delete from 1 device. And to be honest, that was not my point anyhow. My point was that while I know that and YOU know that deleting a photo in your iPhone will delete it in iCloud and on your iPad, the average person may not remember that message that popped up that 1 time 6 months earlier. Go back to my comment about supporting people. These questions/problems DO come up often with average users (people on this board are not average users).
The message pops up EVERY SINGLE time and clearly states "This photo will be deleted from iCloud Photo Library on ALL of your devices". It is ignorant and deceitful to pretend otherwise.

3) While I am not 100% on this next comment as I am not sure how Apple will prune out cloud space, I believe you are incorrect. Most people, and when I say most I bet upwards of 95% or more, will not be paying for extra iCloud storage. Therefore you eventually will run out of space on iCloud. And quickly.
Yeah, if you want to use this service for >5GB you pay money. NOBODY IS MAKING YOU USE THIS. You can still do whatever you were doing up until now.

4) Here you are completely incorrect. And I urge you to try it for yourself before calling me ignorant or trying to highlight your response in all caps. I also urge you to research yourself as you will find other postings on other sites about this. If you take a photo on your phone (mine is an iPhone 5), it is 8MP. If you look at the EXIF data for that photo it is 8MP. If you then download that photo off of iCloud and look at the EXIF data is is ~3.1MP.
You downloaded an OPTIMIZED version. What don't you understand? The full version is on iCloud, and if you turn the full version setting on you can access it. Maybe it the future the web app will download full versions. ITS A BETA (any idea what that means or is the term confusing?).

I am not ignorant. I am not mistaken.
Let's see, you are wrong about iCloud apps being confusing, you are wrong about the delete warning, you are wrong about what size is stored in iCloud, and you are wrong about this using up all a device's storage when in fact it doesn't require (do you know the difference between use if available and require?) any storage whatsoever. I'd call that pretty darn ignorant and mistaken.

I read this whole thread and now I am thoroughly confused. I updated my Mac to Yosemite and my iPad and iPhone to 8.1 and turned on iCloud Drive. I use Aperture and had been downloading photos from my iDevices' camera rolls manually to my Aperture library in the past. What is happening to my photos now?

Update: aha, I went back to Settings/iCloud/Photos and see that I have not yet turned on "iCloud Photo (Beta)". Phew. So presumably nothing has changed for me and all I need to do is follow the discussions as all this unfolds. Now that Camera Roll is back, I am back to my usual pre-iOS 8 workflow. I hope.

Proline, you are incorrect. I hope that others reading this realize that you are making statements that are simply not true. It is not opinion, it is fact, at least in how the system is working for me (I point that out in the case that maybe I have some odd setting, but I don't believe I do).

1) I just took a photo using an iPhone 5.
2) I logged into iCloud.com, and within about 30 seconds the photo disappeared.
3) I picked up my iPhone and deleted the photo...THERE WAS NO WARNING WHATSOEVER. The photo was deleted instantly (albeit moved to the "Recently Deleted" album, not deleted, but I hope I am not being ignorant and I do realize you can restore from the recently deleted album if you'd like). The message DOES NOT pop up every single time as you so contend (at least on my phone).
4) I returned to iCloud.com and within 30 seconds the photo was removed.

There was no message. If you want to assert that it wasn't "officially deleted and you can restore from the recently deleted album", I'll give you that. And recovering the photo from recently deleted does put it back into All Photos and back into iCloud. (From what I can tell there is no recently deleted album on iCloud.com, so you would need to use the device you deleted from to recover.)

In terms of the optimized version being downloaded, that again is something I confirmed through actually taking a photo, viewing its EXIF data from the original on the phone, downloading the uploaded copy from iCloud, and then viewing that version's EXIF data. I did not "accidentally" download any optimized version. I downloaded the 1 and only version that was on iCloud, and it is not a full resolution file as Apple has indicated.

If you would re-read the initial posting I made, the one you emphatically attacked, you will see that I in fact stated, and I quote from the original post: "I am not sure if this is related to the service being a beta". I realize it is a beta. I also wrote in my initial post "Let's hope that Apple has plans to really improve this service."

This thread is currently 8 pages and 178 postings. But when comment about this being confusing, you assert, and I quote again, "No it isn't. Only to you." Ok.

To the others that come to this site for constructive commenting, learning, and assistance, I hope that you find what you are after without being attacked by such condescending members as proline.

Has anyone figured out how to import your previously sync'd folders?

I have been wracking my brain trying to figure out how to import the previously sync'd via Itunes folders back into Iphoto Cloud. I have no idea how to do, I don't like the "moments" section, I prefer my categorized folders for photo sync. Ideas? HELP? BUELER BUELER!? =P :D

I fail to see the point in attempting to lie to users in this manner. A UIActionSheet pops up from the bottom of the screen EVERY SINGLE TIME you delete a photo warning you it is gone from ALL devices with a DESTRUCTIVE button you have to press. People can easily check this for themselves and aren't going to fall for this.

I definitely like this feature; managing several disparate photo libraries is something everybody hates dealing with.

That said, storage prices could be lower. Photos of a certain age are unlikely to be retrieved very often, in a similar way to how physical photo libraries gather dust until someone has a look through them every couple of years. That's ideal for some kind of slow, high-capacity storage like magnetic tape.

Also, it doesn't look like it has actually saved me any space on my phone. I take better care than most to delete photos I don't need, but my photo library (including videos) took 6.5GB before and after iCloud Photos did its thing.

My oh my oh my oh my. Seriously, I have no idea what you are attempting to accomplish though these constant put downs of my intelligence or character.

I specifically said that is not happening FOR ME. Maybe I have some setting checked on or off somewhere. Maybe. And I indicated as such right from the very beginning.

it is NOT NOT NOT NOT NOT prompting me at all, let alone every single time, when I delete a photo from my iPhone that my action will be carried out on every device and on iCloud. I just tried it again (for the 4th or 5th time). I am not making it up, and I urge others to check for themselves. I certainly am making this up or spreading lies.

Take a photo on your iPhone...log into iCloud...see photo in iCloud...go back to iPhone...delete photo...it disappears from iPhone AND iCloud with NO PROMPT (at least for me).

As I indicated earlier, if a photo is deleted on the iPhone it will go into the "Recently Deleted" album and can be recovered, just like Trash in OS X or Recycle Bin in Windows. But it cannot (apparently) be recovered directly on the iCloud site. You would need to recover it from the device and it will then re-appear on iCloud. Yes, proline, I've done my homework on this.

No lies. No fingers or toes crossed. No trolling. No mistakes. Could I possibly be more clear to you proline?

THERE IS ABSOLUTELY NO REASON TO WANT TO DELETE FROM 1 DEVICE ONLY. Please reread that three times.

How ignorant can one be???

Instead of YELLING at people, how's about helping them out and EXPLAIN this issue to them? Well,... obviously not everyone is an "iCloud Demi God" like you!

In fact i strongly feel that you are awfully wrong. I could give you one good reason for why i would love to have ALL my pics in the cloud and only a couple left on my devices: storage capacity. period.

I use iTunes Match from day one it has been available in my country and i totally like it and understand the way its supposed to be used, but i could not find any official documentation on how this "iCloud Photos thing" works ... all i tested by myself, was ... if i decide to delete a pic from my iPhone it will be deleted in the cloud too ... this is excactly what i do not want.

This does not store all your photos in the cloud. It removed all my photos from my devices. I was only able to get them back by restoring them from time machine. They are not stored in the cloud according to the customer service agent that helped me. Do not enable this!

Why would apple release a beta of this to millions of people when photos are probably the most valuable asset for most people with iphones and the risk of losing them all if you dont do things correctly seems high.

so I guess I'll just leave photostream on so my photos go to my iPhoto on my mac, and then I'll turn on iCloud Photo Library for some extra backup? it looks like iCloud Photo Library wants nothing to do with iPhoto so I'm definitely going to keep photo stream on for my wireless syncing.

Yeah I'm right there with you. I think I'm just going to let sleeping dogs lie and wait and see how the new Photos App pans out. I'm actually kind of excited about it, as I've gotten weary of Aperture's bloat and would like to see my iPhoto and Aperture Library unified into one library/solution. I'm just trying to figure out how iCloud Photo Library would play into that. It was my understanding that with it enabled, I'd no longer have to sync my iPad/iPhone device with iTunes in order to grab the latest albums I've made out of Aperture. It would all be in the "cloud" instead.

I've read the entire conversation between you and Proline. I agree with everything you said.
There are two issues here if Proline would actually read what we are saying:
#1

The logic:
1. -Take photo with iDevice
2. -Photo sync and now resides in iCloud, as well as the iDevice (Locally)
3. -Goto iCloud.com and download the photo to your machine
The Problem
4. -The downloaded version is a reduced quality.

#2
1. -Take photo with iDevice
2. -Photo sync and now resides in iCloud, as well as the iDevice (Locally)
3. -Run out of space on iDevice
4. -Purchase more iDrive storage
5, -Delete from iDevice to clear up space
6. -Deletes from iCloud(iDrive) as well,
The Problem:
Why the heck did I purchase more storage? Especially if the tiers are 5gb, 20gb, 200gb, 500gb, 1TB (Obviously no iDevice is over 128gb... )

If I have a decent collection of photos of videos (which I do) I would opt for the 200gb ($4.99/month) plan. My iDevice is 64gb and my cloud storage is 200gb. If I fill my phone with 64gb of photos & videos that would also be sync'd up and copied over to my iDrive which would now be 64gb/200gb full. But If I then delete the photos and videos from my iDevice my storage is now 0/200gb ... in which case I would never even reach 50% of my alotta storage.

Proline, we are all apple fans and customers, and I understand you want to defend a company you love. But please be mindful of the actual topic and facts before you start calling folks ignorant.

Excellently said acm1108.

In particular you have clarified issue 2 which was nagging at me.

I think proline might say that the phone does some automatic background deletion of local copies as the phone fills up (and then redownloads them on demand) so you just don't ever need to do this. But I can think of scenarios where I would absolutely need to manually free up space on the phone. Eg I'm about to go on a trip and want to add a bunch of movies. How on earth do I free up space?

It's not hard to envisage a solution (some kind of "storage space used for locally stored photos" slider) but it isn't there. And I don't think beta status gets them off the hook for that. As I said, apple's cloud service is where there habit of hiding the background processes from users - which sometimes leads to really clean, de-cluttered, "just works" behaviour - really becomes counterproductive and confusing for users.

Here's the possibilities-

1) You haven't even turned on iCloud Photo Library, but think you have
2) It doesn't bother to warn you, because you only have 1 device using iCloud Photo Library
3) You've discovered some weird bug, but chose to misrepresent that as being the way it is designed even though I have clearly told you otherwise
4) You're a liar and/or part of the Samsung paid blogger program and couldn't care less

I can yell at anyone who choses ignorance over truth. THERE IS NO REASON TO DELETE PHOTOS FROM ICLOUD PHOTO LIBRARY BECAUSE ICLOUD AUTOMATICALLY FREES SPACE AS REQUIRED. 'Storage capacity' is not a factor. THIS IS HOW ICLOUD HAS ALWAYS WORKED. The fact that you have chosen not to learn this shows you have no interest in the facts.

Buddy...you are delusional.

Buddy...you are delusional.

For anyone reading this who is genuinely confused by all the crap people are spreading, just go to this site that clearly shows the nicely worded delete warning that you get (picture 2 of 4 at the bottom). It's disappointing that people are deliberately trying to mislead you but that's MR I guess.

Seriously...I never ever ever ever said that the delete message doesn't exist. I said that I personally on my own equipment do not get the delete message. It is not an opinion, it is fact (again...on my equipment)!

For anyone interested (of which I assume there is nobody)...go look at proline's post history. You will find a tremendous number of entries with ALL CAPS, the word douchey (sp?), underlines in place of swearing, etc.

Still won't admit you are wrong? Shame.
