Please peeps I desperately need some help. Since installing the newest update, my 4s is basically useless. Facebook barely works, Twitter won't load at all; and now my email (Outlook) is screwed.

With FB, the phone FREEZES so that I can't even turn it off or close the app. Watching videos is impossible.

With email, I cannot open them or delete.

Apple keeps telling us that 8.2 has fixed "all problems" for the 6 & 6+. What about the earlier models?

Your phone is too old in Apple's mind, and as such it doesn't deserve optimisations.
You can't downgrade as of now. So, hope that 8.1 will fix your issues, although most probably it won't.
And your current cersion is 8.0.2, not 8.2.

Looks like they're gonna try to get all the 4s owners to upgrade with 8, same as they did to all the 4 owners with 7.

I've had the same problems on 2 4S' and 2 iPad2's. I've tried "Reset All Settings", "Reset Network Settings", and "Setup as New on iTunes" and nothing has helped.

I would suggest that you not waste your time in trying any of it. Just sit tight until Apple releases iOS 8.0.3 or iOS 8.1. The beta of 8.1 is working well from what I've heard.

Good Luck! :)

To be fair. The iPhone 4S is 3 years old and only has the A5 chip..

In the world of mobile platforms that is like a 20 year old device.

Oh and. IOS 8.2 isn't out yet.

And this is really really sad.

I'm a huge Apple fan and own a lot of devices. But the way the batterylife of my iphone 5 has been reduced after the ios8 upgrade ( + all the well known bugs ) really killed my user experience.

iOS 8.2 on iPhone 4s

Thanks people for your quick responses. I had reserved a 6+ from my carrier the day they were launched. I'm STILL waiting to be notified when it will be delivered or when I can pick it up. In the meantime, I'm stuck with a basically useless 4s where the most I can do is make calls, text and read my news apps.

Thanks for your help.

----------

Does anyone know if it's possible to go back to iOS 7???? I noticed on a different thread how someone said they went from 8.0.2. back to the last 7 version. I'm having trouble connecting to this user or I'd ask him.

My wife and I are in the same boat. We ordered two iPhone 6 Pluses on September 12th from AT&T. The estimated ship date is 10/31 to 11/11.

I've found that my 4S works better when using cellular data rather than WiFi. Some of the issues with iOS 8.0.2 revolve around WiFi. I also found out that shutting off Bluetooth will improve WiFi performance on a 4S. Even with the improved performance I'm still seeing the general slowness that you described.

In any case, I'm sure that Apple will get this fixed soon. ;)

Once Apple stops firmware signing it's game over.

I have a 4S and planning to get a 6 as soon as the initial buying frenzy cools down. Thanks for the article - I'll leave the 4S on IOS 7. I upgraded an iPad 2 to IOS 8.0.2 and it seems ok so far.

I would just do a DFU restore/ clean install and see how it performs. It shouldn't be unusable.

To be fair, Apple still sold the iPhone 4S brand new less than a month ago.

To the OP: It sounds like something is going wrong. From a computer, do a full backup within iTunes. Then try a complete restore of the phone and test to see if it recovers. Then restore the backup. If it works after the full restore, but NOT after the backup restore, then something in your config is causing the problem. Do the full restore again, and manually reload everything.

My wife's 4S is running just fine on iOS 8.0.2. (Trust me, I'd hear if it wasn't...)

Likewise, my ~three-year-old 4s is running fine with iOS 8. I would say that this has been one of the better upgrade experiences for me. I did have to connect to iTunes to do the upgrade - that was the only glitch. Battery life has been great, I get over three days of standby time and that is with some usage on the clock as well.

If Apple is 'trying to force me to upgrade', they are not doing a very good job of it.

You should have waited till 8.1 is released. It will bring speed enhancements.

Now what you can do is restore everything from scratch. It will run acceptable this way.

I have problems with FaceBook on my 5s. I think it has more to do with the FB app than iOS 8.

Are you using the native mail app or something else? I haven't had any issues with MailBox or the Gmail app. I don't use Apple Mail, so I can't give any feedback there.

ios 8.1 is pretty much the same speed so don't keep your hopes high guys , maybe ios 8.3 would actually bring ios 8 on a level on par with 7.1.2 its sad but true. i kinda wish apple release an iOS that actually is faster than the previous one kinda like google is doing with android, making new firmware run on lower end devices with 512 ram and actually improving battery life and not decreasing it, i'm not an android guy but having a 4s, i am seriously considering moving to android once android L comes out. i love IOS i don't want to do that but i hope i dont have to

Am I the only one getting a very, very smooth experience on a 4S around here? Except for the notification banners bug, my 4S feels better than iOS 7 with all the new features...

No, satisfied customers are underrepresented on forums.

It has been great for me, and the first time my iPad rang when I got a phone call, I was happily surprised (the whole Continuity thing is not supported with the 4s - but that part works).

It's 8.0.2 not 8.2.

Download the ipsw file from the web, save it on your machine.
Open iTunes and click on Restore while holding down the shift key and you can browse to the ipsw file which has ios 7.1.2 or any other ios version that you would wish to install and you should be all set.

Won't work anymore as Apple has stopped signing 7.1.2

isn't there some way - through jailbreaking or a signature server like saurik or Doulci - to bypass the signature step?

I've spent hours trying to get my 4S from 6.1.3 to 7.1.2 and can't believe there is no workaround.
