What security problem gets solved by this, that is not already solved by not plugin your phone into untrusted computers?

Plugging your phone into computers which you trust but shouldn't? You may not do it, but many people do.

I noticed during the public beta that iMazing stopped working and I never used any functionality that isn't possible without iTunes File Sharing. It's just that iMazing has a better user interface than iTunes
Data that is accessible via iTunes File Sharing should still be accessible to 3rd party tools as well. It may require updating the tools though.

Yes, it appears from their Twitter feed that they plan to issue a patch later this week.

I always felt it is way too easy for thiefs/snoops to create a trust pairing with a computer/forensic device, which would in turn give them access to a lot of sensitive data on the device. It just takes a second with the unlocked device. I wish Apple would at least require entering the passcode (if the device is unlocked) to create a pairing, and give the user a way to revoke unwanted pairings.

Also, it is possible to access the data without creating a new trust pairing by stealing the pairing keys from an existing trusted computer.

Wow, Apple

Anyone want customizeability with a phone that when rooted and unlocked, still won't break your warranty? Get a OnePlus One!

Noooooooooooooooooooooo :'(

This was the only way to perform a clean install without loosing all your App data. FREAKING APPLE.

I'm glad to see I'm not the only one who does this. Luckily I have a jailbreak, but I'm not sure what I'll do with future updates.

With every problem that I go the Apple store with, they always say "Oh well you have to restore your phone." Well no ****, then you erase everything! Apps like iExplorer is why I can suck it up and just wipe my phone if I need to, but I guess all good things come to an end.

I don't know why so many people seem surprised about this. I'm personally shocked it took them this long to crack down on it.

It sucks, but users on this site should know by now to expect this kind of behavior from Apple. If you need full access to your device's filesystem, jailbreak or go Android. Those are the only two real options, and Android is probably your best bet.

Apple is making me consider Android these days...it has come to this. I just can't keep waiting months for a potential jailbreak to come out and in the mean time, apps like these wont even work anymore.

This blows. I use iFunBox to transfer saved game data around and now I cannot.

Lately I am really really really contemplating testing android.

Android isn't much better on that front. Varies by app, but there's still plenty of sandboxed data you can't get to without rooting an Android device.

This is nothing new. Developers always have to update their apps for iOS changes dealing with the connections. They'll work it out. iMazing usually asks me to trust the computer before it lefts me do anything on the device. It's only half working at the moment, but I bet it gets updated by next week with fixes.

I used to make app backups with Helium on Android. It was OK, but I like the fact that I can drag and drop stuff fairly easy on the computer with my iOS devices and it's not constantly having to tap on a bunch of stuff on the phone's screen to do the same thing.

Evidently Apple is more concerned about security than giving 3rd party apps access to areas of the file system that are obviously making the device less secure for the average user. Seems completely warranted IMO. These devices aren't just toys. They're also used is business and indeed are preferred over Android precisely because they are far more secure.

Maybe they are blocking all of these apps to add their own field explorer in iOS 9 ;)

That would be excellent. Although iMazing was working good for me.

Although I haven't tried it since this announcement.

Apple doesn't intend for apps like those to work.

The fact that they do merely means that Apple isn't as strict as they could be with sandboxing the iPhone.

If Apple increasing the security of your phone is making you consider switching to Android, then by all means switch. Android phones seem to be geared towards users that don't care about security anyway.

Same: iPhone 4S battery is shot. They want to update it to 8.3 for "battery life fixes"? NO WAY! :D

Each iOS update keeps getting more and more useless!
There is a reason why people jailbreak! It's because they want to personalize there devices! If Apple made software with Android Customization, less people would jailbreak.

Finally, iTunes is awefal. Each version just like iOS gets more restrictive and, harder to use. There are 3rd parties out there that do a better job than Apple's mediocre program :D

Or how about Apple starts giving a damn about its users and let's them individually transfer app data. It's not good enough that Genius Bar's number one solution is to erase your device and not restore it from your backup as that brings the issues back across, meaning you loose everything.

It's 2015 and apple is too busy making watches and semi useles one port laptops than implementing something that would help a lot.

Apple should allow us to transfer data for individual apps.

Apple actually doing so has absolutely nothing to do with watches or laptops.

The Genius Bar is not the problem It's Apple Corperation. It's our Apple Device. It should not be forced to constrain to there needs. Our own devices should reflect our own needs.!

It's sad to see my favorite company tumble like a rock :(

One day, Jailbreakers will control iOS and, have powerful tools to downgrade to whatever iOS our heart desires:rolleyes:;)

Heck, with advanced codeing skills, we could mix match our favorite parts of iOS together into, a hybrid one:D!

Well I meant Apple in general was at fault, but one of the reasons why is that the genius bar use the erase option all too often.

true. I understand now. The full restore excuse is often abused! 21st centruy ethics. If it looks too complex, go the easy route:rolleyes:

I noticed this after the update during my day job in forensics. This is actually a positive thing for people who want more security. Previously this loop hole allowed additional data to be recovered from the App areas that were off limits to the backup service.

Apple haven't done it to stop people using 3rd party tools as such. I believe they've done it to make iOS even more secure for themselves and their customers by stopping potential snooping through people's cache folders etc.

I think it relates to the item in the 8.3 security change log that reads as follows:

Or they could have done the sane thing and moved any caches or personal data out of the app location, then just blocked access to the cache only. Why is the app location even writable by anything but the app manager during installs/updates? So sloppy.

Try Android, a real operating system, and you'll realize how fake iOS is...

I recently got an Android, the LG G3, and I LOVE IT! It can replace not only my jailed iPad on iOS 8.3, but also my computer, the rumors and stuff are true, you can do almost anything you want with it WITHOUT ROOT! Especially customization... Like I have a "transparent phone" with widgets, whatever app icons I want on the home screen, wherever I want them, not forced against each other and to the top left like on the iOS springboard, oh, and a front wall cydia tweak android alternative... It's just a simple photo frame widget... :D. And the multitasking on Android is phenomenal, your games will run full power in the background without closing unless a.) it's made by supercell, or b.) you run out of ram. Get this, you know how Apple's getting tighter on security? And all that other $h!t? Well before Android lollipop, this required root but on lollipop, Android 5, you can now even screen record, without root, and that's because Google opened (NOT CLOSED, NOT RESTRICTED, BUT OPENED) up a utility that was once restricted to root access. Lol, right?! And if you don't like how the interface looks, you can even replace the home screen (launcher) and the lockscreen, without root... Lol, keep in mind all you need root for is to access system level files and folders, root level Linux shell commands, etc... so idk exactly if you can access game files, you probably could, depends on the game, where it saves, and idk where those files are saved, haven't looked because I'm not the super big mobile gamer... But I will say this though... With an android, I honestly can give 2 $h!t$ about a Jailbreak... Except for the fact that without it, my iPad's basically a big giant mp3 player... Lmfao once you think about it... Lol. Besides, I gotta stop myself somewhere, otherwise I can keep going. :D lol.

I fear history is repeating itself. Apple died once before, and it's likely heading that way again. They never learn from their mistakes. It's a shame, because I like my iPhone.

I love my iPhone too. There is a reason why I still have a 4S on 6.1.2

1. Durability; Steve Jobs Era Phone
-Does not bend (like a 6+)

2. Perfect size for one hand texting

3. UI is how I like it

There needs to be another Steve Jobs. This time around, Apple could die:(
