No worries Apple faithful.... expect Apple to announce a security hole in iOS 7.x that is fixed in 8.x. That'll goose the laggers into upgrading to 8.

I had the GM on my iPad Mini, and upgraded my iPhone 5S to 8.0 when it was released. Both now are 8.0.2.
I've not had any issues with the phones, other than the Camera does not start properly when I swipe up from Lock Screen on 5s.
It is a bug IMO, but not one to make me downgrade to iOS7

I don't know if this has been brought up yet or not, it's a very long thread, sorry, but it's an absolute non-issue. iOS 7 was a huge update, everybody was talking about it, it brought life to the tried old OS and UI. If you saw iOS 7 on a friend's device and then picked up yours with 6 installed, chances are your eyes bled from it, an you rushed home to update. It was a cool new kid on the block. On the other hand, iOS 8 is a more "ordinary" update for most users. Most consumers don't follow tech news and unless they are compelled to, they update when the device (or a techy friend like many of us) nags them long enough to do it. Just like two years ago in the case of iOS 6. Look at this report:
http://www.cnet.com/news/ios-6-adoption-hits-61-percent-just-one-month-after-its-release/
After 4 weeks, iOS 6 adoption rate was at 61%. Now, iOS 8 is at 47% after two and a half weeks. I think that's an adoption rate comparable to, if not better than the last "ordinary" iOS update.

Ok. Another explanation could be the fact that iOS7 was pushed out as a forced download...

Is this really surprising?

At the lower end you have phones that just don't handle the update well, and there are so many bugs across all devices that a fair amount of individuals would just be put off.

Also how can you sell people 8GB phones when an update requires nearly 4.7GB? iTunes is a solution, but in a "post-PC" world telling casual consumers this while also pushing iCloud and all that entails is ridiculous.

47% of iOS users today is somewhere around 352 million.

60% of iOS users one year ago was 300 million.

iOS 8 has exceeded iOS 7, and Apple blog authors cannot count.

Click bait is more important than facts.

... everyone who wants to listen to music on their iPhones surely? How else would you organise and sync your music library otherwise?

Some people prob just buy music on the iTunes app on the phone or do Spotify / Beats / Subscription services.

Music is getting easier and easier to consume without the need to sync.

I still sync my devices but you might be surprised how many people don't need to.

Yet another performance hit

Going from iOS 6 to iOS 7 was a performance hit for my iPad 2 and my iPhone 4s. Based on reviews, going to iOS 8 is going to be even worse. And this is true despite the fact that much of the new bling is disabled on these devices. I'll consider upgrading if an update comes along that sheds some more of the glitz in favor of making the older devices suck less. Otherwise, I'll happily "upgrade" to iOS 8 when my finances make it appropriate for me to buy a new iPhone.

Speaking of the new iPhones, I went to the Apple store in Syracuse and checked out the 6+. It's awesome. I have fat finger problems typing on the older models and would find the new ones to be easier to use. The big problem there is that most of my pants have pockets that are too small for the 6+, and although they would hold the 6, I couldn't also fit other items in there at the same time like I do now.

Buy a new wardrobe? Not on a NY state employee salary. I'm not like you others out there who live in Manhattan and buy diamond-studded wallets.

honestly wish i was still on 6. 7 was okay but iOS 8 has had nothing but problems for me and many others. Unacceptable and very unlike apple for this to happen.

Unlike apple from 10 years ago. Their quality control is crap, today.

It's weird how I can type easier on a 3GS than my 5.

That's just twisting the facts.

- 40% of the users didn't upgrade after the same number of days last year since the release of the new OS. That was 200 million users back then.

- 53% of the users didn't upgrade this year. That is 396 million.

Apple is the Microsoft of the 2000s now and I refuse to buy their new hardware or use their new OSes or updates until all the beta testers (paying customers) have found the bugs.

Annoying

I have an IT company so I have to test this stuff before my customers do something crazy. Updated my 5s and Air to iOS 8 on day one. My iPad constantly locks rotation and I have to reboot. My keyboard will appear on the home screen.... all kinds of weird stuff. My iPhone is doing better since a hard reboot after iOS 8.0.2. Bluetooth was the big issue, but it seems better now, so no complaints there. Still not recommending upgrades to any customers. Very bad release for Apple. But as I've said in the past, they fix their issues 10x faster than android. At least Apple owns the whole thing and can issue fixes, rather than pointing fingers.

iOS is starting to bloat, so I think Apple should do a "Snow Leopard" of the iOS world - ie slimmed down and streamlined OS with minor changes.

Reduced size, less space needed to unpack and install and also better performance across the board which would breathe life back into some older devices and also decrease iOS fragmentation. Everybody wins.

Amen,

Users or devices. There's a difference.

just out of curiosity, those 6% that don't have either, since Apple stop signing those earlier updates to, does that mean they can't restore to that same version ? What if iO8 won't run on older hardware ?

Lord knows I'm an Apple basher (I own all their products, so I have a right to be) and normally I get burned by their updates, but I have to say, why not update? I understand waiting until the 2 or 3rd updates, but it's free. With that said, I don't think iOS8 materially changed much.

I think the consensus is that iOS 8 messes up more things than it improves, I get crashes on my 6 fairly frequently, no biggie as they're just exiting Apps rather than full reset but still - I'd rather not have them.

The main point is - what is the benefit of iOS 8? I really can't see anything yet, it literally offers nothing new to me of any use. Even Apple pay, when it arrives, won't arrive for me because I live in the UK. Photos is more of a mess than ever - "Moments", "Collections", "Activity", "Recently Added", "Recently Deleted", how convoluted and pretentious can they make it?? The whole cloud thing is a mess. For a company that makes things that "Just work" it doesn't - Apple are becoming very much like Microsoft of the Vista days lately, a mess.

There are a lot of older devices still running, iPhone 4, 4s, and earlier iPads that will be hurt by the upgrade. That's why the hold off. The 5, 5s, and 5c, plus newer iPad users have already upgraded.

could the lag be that 8 is syncing all your app data in the background in order for continuity to pass off at any moment? there must be some sort of radio handshaking going on as well...

Didn't updates always require a ton of space when its done OTA? I don't think space limitations is the problem, I just think people don't see a difference between iOS7 and 8.

It was expected

This is by far the worst upgrade in apple's history.
They should have the ethics to let people go back to ios 7 until they can do this one right.

Windows 8, now iOS 8 ... conspiracy! Especially if the next OS release is not 9 but 10. :D
