That is why having a slot to install your own memory would work wonders. Better for the consumer and Apple.

We can only dream Apple will add an sd slot to their phones. But it ain't going going to happen. They know folks will stop buying the 64 and 128gb models if they add an sd slot for more storage.

I don't think the lack of a SD card slot is the cause of a slow adoption rate. It certainly had no effect on prior iOS updates. I doubt very much many consumers are worked up over having a memory card slot.

I wonder what the cause is for the stagnation - I'm assuming the early issues that were uncovered with 8.0 and 8.01

Nope. Still seeing problems. And, after all, what's the point of upgrading. There's nothing here for me. It's not an update with any features I want. In fact, I just want my stuff to work and I don't want to be beta testing stuff for Apple. If the iPad Air 2 comes out in a couple of weeks, I'll grudgingly end up with iOS 8. Until then, though, I 'll stick with iOS 7 on my iPad. Unfortunately, I updated my 5s to iOS8 and there is nothing I can do about that now.

Its the 5.7tb OTA install. Ridiculously huge for many.

I took my laptop on a home visit to do my parent's and an aunt. Who are all of free. For a reason. No more virus/malware troubles, or a system they can bog down with ask/google/yahoo toolbars.

And s half dozen coworkers, techies and engineere!

On top of that, Apple doesn't make it clear enough you can plug direct into iTunes to bypass storage issue. Year after year, these people don't keep up like enthusiast fanboys here do,

This is why I always update my os through itunes, hassle or not I backup both on icloud and itunes. Apple really need to up minimum memory - 16GB is just not enough let alone 8!!

Forstall to be Rehired?

So Forstall got outed for being a d*ck. Turns out that he was the better man for the job, though, huh? Comparing the number of defects in this iOS to previous releases would suggest that to be the case.

I am still thinking iOS8's reason for existence was to drive owners of 4s phones to buy newer ones. The lag on my 4s was so bad that I did get a 6, now performance on the 6 is what I remembered good old days of the 4 were.

and for some odd reason, mine gets lost while getting mail requiring power off to fix, anyone else? (3 mail accounts)

My only issue with iOS 8 was the actual updating process on my 4S. Basically I got caught when they pulled the first update (8.0.1) because the downloaded file would not verify. Eventually it worked when 8.0.2 came out. It was exactly a smooth process, Apple's error messages in iTunes were opaque, and there was nothing about this issue on Apple support pages that I could find. Apple needs to raise its game back to where it was. Rushing things out prematurely for an arbitrary deadline is stooopid.

How is your 5S worse for it?

You don't like better encryption?
Don't like continuity?
Don't like notification widgets?
Don't like share extensions?
Don't like activity extensions!
Don't like sharing purchases with close family? Do you have any close family...? :(
Dont't like the ability to use touchid for third party apps.

I mean... Holyshit... There's a multitude of benefits and new features in iOS8.

People are realising that updating isn't always the best option. Even if it does mean Apple ditching support near enough straight away. With the horrible bugs and inevitable slowdown on older devices, updating Apple's devices has become a frustrating affair.

I don't understand the problem. Can't they just connect the phones to computers running iTunes, or do you mean that it's because iOS 8 takes more space after installation (which I've heard it does)?

It most likely is because, like my sister, they don't have or use a computer for their music/stuff.

My sister has a PC but she never connects the iPad2 or her 5s to it, so iTunes was never installed. She has relied on the OTA process from day one to manage her iThings.

When the 8.0 and .01/.02 came out she asked me each time if she should upgrade and I told her most likely she can't because of the free space issue.

She cleared off the space anyway and installed. No complaints about bugs, slow, etc... though so I can't comment on that.

People are getting wise. My iPhone 4 became a complete dog when I updated to iOS 7. If I was on a 4S or older iPad I would not update. No way,

There are a number of improvements in iOS 8 that make a real difference for me, especially the improved keyboard, the ability to use third-party keyboards, and Touch ID for other apps. But that doesn't negate the fact that the iOS 8 rollout has been far from smooth for many. To some extent, Apple's hands are tied by hardware release dates, which force them to release OS software before its time. The adoption rate will increase when 8.x is out and people hear that it's stable.

An over-the-air update is a tough sell on 8GB or 16GB devices – lots of people wouldn't want to delete photos and apps to make way for a software update.

I actually found a lot of VIDEOS on my iPhone. Apparently they were downloaded when I played them, and never deleted. Once I found those, I was able to clear enough space. I did find it odd that this update (8.0x) seemed to demand a lot more space too for the install. Once device (iPad) demanded 7 gig!

It would seem that we are getting to the point where everyone will have larger memory of their iDevices and Apple can make the updates larger. Yippee!

8 has been 'quirky'. Slow 'distracted' iPad performance, interesting... Having to sometimes wait for it to 'come back'.

Lots of attempts on my 4S with 64GB and for lover a week every attempt failed.
Hooking up to iTunes these days is too much work (I know big deal) with all kinds of manual input needed.

Then it doesn't want to import music that wasn't bought or apps I installed from another account etc.etc.

A friend with a 32GB $S did not have enough space. All in all not Apple like.

Surely there must be a better way Apple!

I can't for the life of me think why adoption rates of a new iOS are important or relevant.

They're forced on most people who don't even want them, we don't have a choice. We can't even choose a specific iOS or revert back to one that arguably would work a lot better on our older devices even if we wanted to.

It's a completely irrelevant statistic that exists only to make someone's ego feel better that their new software (firmware) is popular and not utter crap.

Apple should release numbers on how many people ever connect their phones to iTunes anymore(after a possible first time). I would like to see those stats.

I had my iPad 2 for well over 2 years before connecting it to my Mac. I just never needed to because I wasn't syncing music that much. I finally ended up reinstalling the whole thing from backup cause it broke ... After going from iOS 5->7 and 200+ apps (like it was going out of style or something)

I don't really feel the need to connect again for iOS 8... Every time I get close to curling up on the couch for a night of upgrading... There's another major problem on the news sites. Until Yosemite is out there's literally zero reason to upgrade older devices that don't get all the features anyway. Seems to be dodging a bus here.

Meh. It's not as secure as Apple has implied. It's not bad, of course, but it isn't worth the hassle.

Don't like continuity?
Meh. It's OK, but not something I have a burning desire to use.

Don't like notification widgets?
Nope. Not at all.

Don't like share extensions?
No.

Don't like activity extensions!
No.

The family thing is long overdue... and that is why I am uninterested. We've already double-purchased the apps we want. I wish this would have been around years ago, especially when I wasted all that money on Apple apps. And, to be honest, I don't remember the last time we actually bought apps. Sorry developers, but with hundreds of apps already, I think we're covered for a few years.

I mean... Holyshit... There's a multitude of benefits and new features in iOS8.

Sure. I'm glad to hear you are excited about it. I'm not saying it lacks new stuff. I'm not even saying that any of it is bad. I'm just saying that none of it appeals to me. In fact, neither did iOS7. I only have that because it came with the devices. For me, at least, Apple isn't coming up with stuff that makes me want to upgrade. A lot of people I know feel the same way. Sorry to be such a wet blanket.

It wasn't always this way. The earlier OS versions had stuff I desperately wanted. I think I even paid ten dollars for that copy/paste OS (OS 2?).

My wife updated her 4S to iOS 8. It has become a lot slower.
Unfortunately she can't downgrade to iOS 7.
Now, all we can do is hope for an iOS 8 4S speed update (like they did with iOS 7).

In the long run, I don't see how Apple will benefit from crippling peoples devices; giving people bad Apple/iOS experiences this fast. Many people bought their 4S little more or less than a year ago – and iOS 8 doesn't offer a lot that iOS 7 didn't.

I upgraded my 5S to 8.0 on release and honestly, didn't see anything there worth losing my jailbreak over. I went back to 7.1.2 two days later and have stayed there on my 5S and Retina Mini. None of those features you list above are must haves.

The wife is sticking to 7 since they've trashed the photos app with 8.

They also disabled their own iPhoto application in favor of the weak editing tools in the native photo application. That's fine that they offered it free with purchasers of new iOS devices in the past, however it really chaps those of us who purchased the application before it was offered for free.

iOS 8 made my iPad 2 unusable/unstable. I rolled back to 7.1.2 after two days and very glad I did. Before iOS 8's release iPhone 4 & 4S owners were widely warned that updating might negatively effect their device's performance. Not peep about older iPads. Now to their credit Apple did leave the signing window open far longer than the usual 24-48 hours to roll back. But it smacks of greed that Apple didn't at least mention that this might negatively effect of the speed and stability of a product they were selling up until just a few months ago.

The majority of the things you listed require developer cooperation (or Yosemite), which also appears to be lagging. Probably in about 6-8 months most apps will be updated to take advantage of ios 8. Then would be a good time to update.
