Bad idea and here is why:

GM will expire. Despite what people claim it does not count as the final version and here is exactly what will happen if you do this and don't upgrade to the regular version (checking in iTunes will tell you its the latest version but it will expire).

You download GM, it explores. You try and upgrade/restore in iTunes and you can't, because iTunes is confused (unless Apple fixed this issue) and thinks you have a current version.

You then have to do a backup and then a DFU restore and restore using the IPSW file and then restore everything back on your phone. It's a giant pain in the ass and takes awhile.

*SIGH* The GM's don't expire, it is the same software as on the iPhone 6 you're getting today. The GM don't even require a developer account to install. There will NOT be some magical different software on the iPhone 6. All major telecoms in my country warned NOT to install iOS 8 if you use call forwarding, cause that is broken. It will be fixed 8.0.1, but they didn't put a date on that update.

Positive. I'm the one who had to update not only my iPad but all the test machines at work when this happened because I thought it just rolled over too. iTunes said I was up to date, yet the GM expired.

Nope... I was on GM last year with iOS 7 on all my iPads and iPods. It never expired, OTA updates to iOS 7.0.1 also worked flawlessly

The GM is usually the exact same build number and exact same software as the final version. Unless it has a different build number, they're the same.

See my above post.

Yes they were and you'll be in for a pain in the ass if you don't use the ipsw file to upgrade from the GM seed to the regular version.

----------

Nice try but it usually doesn't get released until around 10am Pacific time not midnight.

GM = public release build. Stop spreading FUD.

----------

iOS 7- the public release and the gm were different versions right?

I'll just wait for the public release, just a few hours to go now.

I remember the shocking iOS 7 download speeds, I had to wait a day too before I could pull it down.

No, they were the same build.

iOS7 GM build, was what was loaded on the 5S's they shipped from China, and what the released to the public.

----------

Get real

Go back in time to the iPhone 4 threads and you will see lots of people disliking iOS 6 and especially 7 for how it negatively effected their phones performance.

If you think you can blindly trust everything and that every future iOS update will be sunshine and roses with no issues then you my friend are sorely mistaken.

p.s. if you always buy/subsidize a new $650+ phone every two years then this doesn't apply to you as much since an iPhone should at least be ok for 1 update cycle before you get rid of it with another new version 2 years later. For those who actually plan to keep their phone longer than two years though I would be cautious.
iPhone 4 was gimpy with single processor core.

The jump to the SMP support in the 4S was ginormous, and since.

Total BS. No GM has ever 'expired' you are talking out of your hat.

I have taken the GM on EVERY full release of iOS so I am talking from experience not spouting FUD like yourself.

Not even remotely true. I have kept the GM on both my iPhone and iPad the past 3 iOS releases and nothing, it never expired. And, you can update to any updates that come out from the GM.

This is really a non issue. What generally happens is that people stay on the last beta, don't realize they haven't updated to the GM, and then thr last beta expires.

Also, if you've paid for a dev license, or are on a kosher dev team's license list, your GM will always be valid. It is the final release, no 2 ways about it.

However, if you've paid a few bucks for cheap UDID fix, then i can see how your GM suddenly 'expires' one day....

Performance is great!

I'm running the iOS 8 GM on my 5s and the performance is great. You have to reset the settings or do a clean install though.
There are minor performance issues with scrolling through long lists, music app for example, but they'll fix this any time soon.
Battery life is also fine, just like before and i didn't even do a clean install.

So don't worry about the update.

None of this is true.

None of this is true.

Yes it is. Geeze why would I made something like that up?

Go ahead, install at your own risk.

Well that wasn't the case with my stuff or at work. I've been a developer since Apple released the SDK, I'm well aware of how it works. Why would I made something like that up?

I'm not spouting fud at all. Why would I make such a thing up?

*SIGH* Well this one did on over 20 devices including my own.

I have installed GM builds since iOS4, I think.

They have never expired and have always been the exact same build number as the publicly released .0 versions.

Funny how it is only your devices...

Go ahead, install any old GM and see if they are expired...

No most were work devices, one was mine.

Holy **** you people are ridiculous. I'm not some random kid on the internet who downloads this stuff. I've been an iOS developer since 2008 and do it for a living. I'm well aware of how this stuff works.

8:45 here on the east coast, and no OS8 available yet. Later today perhaps??

So I'm relying on my iPhone and apple maps to get me back to Florida tomorrow, think its worth updating or leaving it until I get to Florida ??

I've been using apple maps to get from Florida -> Gatlinburg TN -> Nashville -> Memphis -> New Orleans -> orlando

So far it's worked flawlessly

Ok then how did I get my 7.0.* updates when I was on iOS 7 GM?

I don't think you do. If you don't believe me, how about the guy that makes jailbreaks then:
https://twitter.com/iH8sn0w/status/377512802467840000

I personally don't care what you think, and I don't care whatever you linked to says. It happened and caused a huge headache.

Is it common? Absolutely not, I only had it happen with one release. Did it happen and could it happen again? Absolutely.

Did it happen to others? Sure did! I found how to fix it on the support forums.

Read above.

Again, please tell me why on earth I would lie about such a thing? Seriously tell me what I would gain from it since you all seem to think I'm lying?
