Anybody else having trouble updating? I download the update fine, but my iPhone has been stuck with the dimmed Apple logo and a full loading bar for about 15 minutes. Wait it out or go ahead and restore?

Myself and many others did a hard reset (home button and power button) and then started it back on again with a prompt to complete upgrade. Only stopped on my iPad but seems to work pretty well.

This is phone SMS text messages (non iOS users) now appearing in your iMessage (ones that you normally would not see, since they were only sent to your phone number). You'll also need Yosemite for this to work.

I would think that your iPhone would have to be on the same WiFi network. (I can't imagine they're intercepting at the carrier.)

Gary

Actually the iPhone just needs an Internet connection. The routing is done through iCloud.

A carrier name doesn't cause an iPhone to lag... It's a piece of text, that's it. If that's causing your phone to lag then you have serious issues. Maybe delete some of the stuff you have on there, and see if that works.

I know it seems strange but a long carrier name causes some kind of memory leak which makes iphone slow. I have already restored it but the problem exists

bad battery life

i have had bad battery life with all the betas hopefully this improves it. my battery drains super quick when i use the beats music app or gps seems to also. and with those apps my phone gets hotter than normal. anyone else notice this or have that problem? i went from 100% to 90% in like 10 minutes or less using the beats music app for instance. its like 4x faster than it was before doing ios8

Not happy at all with the continued trend of "Yes"/"No" buttons in iOS and OS X. Goes against Apple's legendary user interface guidelines, which recommend using action-oriented buttons, such as "Cancel" or "Allow".

I really wish Apple would allow the user to disable most of the crap on the status bar. I'd rather just have a battery percentage by itself than an icon and the percentage. Hell I don't even need to see the carrier personally. Along with all the other icons Apple forces onto the end user.

Reason why jailbreaking to me was worth it.

Agreed with this. Btw... why does the carrier name need to even appear on the top? Makes no sense to me. As an example, my work Android phone does not have this at all, so I know it can't be a "carrier mandated" thing.

Apple, please get rid of the carrier name in the menu bar. It's totally unnecessary and redundant. The user *already knows* what carrier he/she belongs to!

I agree with this. That top bar is just getting far too cluttered since they added that weird dotted signal strength indicator.

My biggest problem is my photos & videos take up so much room, but with iOS keeping device-optimized versions available on the iPhone to save storage space, maybe I could do with 16/32GB.
Depends -- if you only use your camera roll, maybe. If you use albums and sync your photos to a PC/Mac, they the optimized versions are already on your phone. Sync'd albums place the original sized copy on the PC/Mac -- learned this the hard way when I lost my hard drive and the only copy I had of my photos were all the sync'd albums on my iPhone.

Looks like with iOS 8, we'll now have the option to keep the originals on the device regardless of syncing.

Maybe optional setting for carrier. I do want to know which network i'm on when i'm traveling to another country.

Wifi calling is worth the update alone, apple is really breaking down the barriers now. It's like they are on a mission right now to kill every annoying thing about having multiple devices in one os jump. This is shaping up to be the most epic os ever. Android is looking so far behind right now.

Go look at the battery usage for apps?

Most recent flagship android phones already have wifi calling...

A lot of the questions people ask can be answered by watching the WWDC 2014 keynote. I watch it every year to see what new features are coming to iOS and OS X

Does anyone know if Apple decided to make notification center and control center gesture not interfere with everything else on the screen yet? I know someone said control center doesn't cause keyboard clicks now, but this problem goes so far and beyond that, it's ridiculous. There are so many aspects that this causes problems for, and most annoyingly of which, is the quick return to the top of a page when swiping down notification center, because it thinks you tapped the top of the menu bar which returns you to the top...

Wifi calling on iPhone 5 please!!! :(

Apple today released the fifth beta of iOS 8, which brings a number of improvements, tweaks, and bug fixes to the beta software that was first introduced on June 2.

iOS 8 beta 5, like previous betas, includes several minor interface modifications designed to make iOS 8 feel faster and more polished. We've gathered up a comprehensive list of all the enhancements that have been bundled into the new beta release below, and to find out about all of the under-the-radar changes in iOS 8 so far, make sure to check out our iOS 8 Hidden Features Roundup.

Health: According to the beta's release notes, Apple's Health app now collects Spirometry data. Spirometry tests measure lung function, tracking the volume and flow of air when inhaling and exhaling. The app has gained several new icons, the ability to export Health data, and a "Show When Logged" option to display Medical ID on the lock screen. There are also privacy settings for Health in the Settings app.

SMS Relay: iOS 8 users are getting a popup that asks them to use their phone numbers for SMS Relay on their MacBooks, one of the new Continuity features between OS X Yosemite and iOS 8.

Photos: Photos now displays a "Last Updated" notification to let users know when images were last synced to iCloud. There's also an iCloud Photo Settings option to store full resolution photos solely in iCloud while keeping device-optimized versions available on the iPhone to save storage space.

iCloud icons: iCloud Drive, Backup, and Keychain have new icons in the iCloud section of the Settings app. The overall iCloud icon has also been updated, featuring a white cloud on a field of blue.

WiFi Calling: When WiFi calling is enabled, it's now labeled T-Mobile WiFi at the top of the iPhone screen.

Predictive text: There's now an option on the keyboard to toggle on predictive text.

Wallpaper Settings: The Brightness toggle has been removed from the Wallpaper section of the Settings app. Changing screen brightness can now be done via the Display & Brightness section of the Settings app that was added in a previous iOS 8 beta.

Additional features in iOS 8 beta 5 will be added here as they are discovered. Apple is likely to continue pushing regular updates to iOS 8 at two or three-week intervals to bring minor performance boosts and changes ahead of the operating system's launch. For more information on iOS 8's features, major and minor, make sure to check out our roundups.

Idk of this a bug but I feel like when in the phone app and dilling a number its a bit "higher " then I'm use too.... I'll try and get a Photo up

Ahhh good point. That said, I'd rather have a splash carrier boot up screen rather than it appearing on my menu bar 100% of the time.

Failure to pay attention to what’s currently staring you in the face 100% of the time is the root of pretty much every “I got a bill for $X000!” story.

Now, imagine everybody travelling *without* a constant reminder that they both are connected and to whom… at $X per min/MB (even if not actively using, there are push notifications, push email, location services, etc).

Heck, historically roaming can even be triggered well within normal coverage area due to failure or capacity issues - uncommon these days, sure, though might still be an issue somewhere.

Handoff not working!

Handoff worked just fine on Beta 4 but now with Beta 5 I can't get Handoff to work; not even by signing in and out of iCloud on both my iPhone and my Mac.

Left iPhone for a GS5

Can anyone tell me if the new keyboard in ios 8 can now learn words like on Android? Like a slang word or whatever? I really do love that about Android. Also can you select a dark theme???

I wish ATT & Verizon would get wifi calling too (carriers fault not Apples)

They don't need it. They have low-bandwidth spectrum. T-Mobile does not. That is why they have wifi calling so people can get service inside buildings.
