iOS 8 Mail app useless for gmail !

Do you have 2-step verification with Google/Gmail? If so, you need to create an app-specific password then use that when setting up your email with your iPhone/iPad.

Actually you have to generate a specific password for a specific app. Go to your google acc and generate it.

It knows it detects two step verify and all is good..
Why not apple does it auto?

I actually disabled two step it allowed me then when I had all done I reenabled two step and it messed all up again..

The only system that this process is automated is android. You will need app specific password on iPhone, iPad, mac for mail, blackberry, windows phone and windows desktop.
Also, outlook.com 2-form authentication works in the similar fashion and a specific password is also required on Apple devices/computers.

Time to learn how Google's two-step authorization works...

Any app that'so not written by Google itself will need an app-specific password.

Ironically, you can learn how to do this by typing in to Google "app specific password."

As others have said, this is a Google thing for their proprietary email protocol. This kind of **** wouldn't happen if Google stuck to open standards

However it doesn't have to be an issue at all, I've got seven google hosted email addresses on my iOS and OS X devices without any issue. Perhaps reflect on yourself a little first before blaming others

Been using Gmail for about 5 years now on iPhones without an issue...the only annoyance being Google deciding to drop exchange support unless you pay for it!

Because Google utilises a proprietary method which doesn't allow others to do that. It has only been mentioned to you several times.

And as others including myself have highlighted it works just fine with the normal app. It is a one time authorisation for your own security. Really don't see the big deal.

Why you may need an App password

When you sign up for 2-Step Verification, we normally send you verification codes. However, these codes do not work with some apps and devices, like Gmail on your iPhone or iPad, Thunderbird, and Outlook.

Which is a Google product so of course it works with Google's 2-step verification. Many systems do not. Again, it's not just Apple. The issue isn't Apple, it's Google 2-step verification. Mlody's post, #9, lists others that do not work with Google's 2-step.

I don't know why people expect competitors to make sure their products run perfectly with Apple (or any other vendor). If Google can make something not work perfectly with Apple that is to their advantage.
I'd guess at once a week there is a thread about how come Apple doesn't do xxxx - and it is mostly a non-Apple application that needs to be fixed and not Apple.
If you are a competitor or a developer who hasn't updated their app in several years - don't blame Apple.

no no it isnt crap i like iphone .. but there are glitches and in android too

it is just tough security at least we see that google cares bout strong safety !!!
Guys dont see it as fail from google .. or apple... security is MUST

The Gmail app has push notifications. The Apple mail app does not support push notifications for Gmail. Note that Google was the one who dropped support for push notifications for Gmail on iOS a few years ago.
