The Gmail app has push notifications. The Apple mail app does not support push notifications for Gmail. Note that Google was the one who dropped support for push notifications for Gmail on iOS a few years ago.

my last iPhone was a IOS6 4s that did

so push has gone natively :(

what about contacts and calender in the native ios8 app and using the GMail app for email ?

Devices that had Gmail set up back when push notifications were supported were grandfathered in, so long as a restore wasn't done on the device which would remove the push notification support.

Yes, that will work - having the Gmail app for push notifications with email, and adding your Gmail account in the mail settings menu for contacts and calendar purposes.

Check out the new Microsoft app to use with Gmail. It is old the Acompli purchased by Microsoft. Has push and labels show as folders by swiping from left. I now use it as my only mail app.

Was an Evomail fan then it was pulled from the app store last year, loved the look and feel of Molto, and that was pulled 2 weeks ago. For me Acompli brought the best of those 2 so I jumped ship when it arrived. I think it killed the other 2 off, now that Outlook have it it should survive...I hope.

Pretty sure it worked even after a restore on such devices.

Worked for me after numerous restores up until i did a restore under iOS8. Whilst it carried on working following an over the air update to iOS8 when it was released when i did a full restore a while later to clear some things up the device ID got changed as part of something they changed between iOS7 and iOS8 so push via google exchange stopped working as they saw it as a new device.

yep, it was up until iPhone 4S i believe, but after 5 they were gonzo!

It still worked on 5 as well for those that got the 5 before February 2013 I believe when Google stopped supporting it on phones being activated after that.
