iOS 8 pretty slow on iPad 3. Guess should not have upgraded :(

Progression is iPad<iPad 2<iPad 3<iPad 4< iPad Air<iPad Air 2.

Therefore iPad 3<iPad Air 2

I upgraded to iOS 8.0.2 on an iPad 2. Not any slower than it was on 6 or 7. At least not that I notice. The newest NetFlix works, Poxelmator works, Handoff and Continuity work. So far so good.

ipad air 2 < ipad 3 2<3 right ? simple math

Not true. iPad 3 = iPad 2 hardware but with retina screen. The same power but had to deal with 4x more pixels. So actually iPad 3 is slower than iPad 2 ;)

iPad 3 had the A5X where the iPad 2 had the A5. The A5X was made specifically to add power for the retina screen. Theoretically the iPad 3 is more powerful then the 2, but because it had to push more pixels the improvement in performance was debatable.

iOS 8 was slow as molasses on iPad 3 for me...much worse than iOS 7.1.x and unusable to me, but now I'm running 8.1.1 beta and it's downright snappy. Not back to iOS 6 levels, but I no longer want to throw it out the window. Now I'm happy keeping it at least another year till the next generation comes out.

How's 8.1.1 for everyone on the iPad 3? Noticeable difference?

It should be a major improvement. I've been testing an iPad 2 today and it's a massive improvement over the previous iOS 8.1 build. I'd probably still suggest sticking with iOS 6 or iOS 7 overall, but if you're stuck with iOS 8 now it should be a significantly better experience after todays update.

Just updated and I wouldn't say major.

It's possible that it's reindexing a bit but I only that that happened with major updates (iOS 7 to iOS 8) than inter .x or .1.x updates.

Lag is more or less as horrible as it's been. The device is certainly usable. Works for reading best. Anything outside of that, the lag really gets in the way.

I learned the hard way that updating the OS on older hardware is a risky proposition. If it's more than a couple of generations old you're probably better off not updating the OS. That way you can still use the device. Once you update you can't go back.

Agree witht this.

iOS 8 was horrific on my iPad 3. 8.1 made things much better but still not good enough. Been using 8.1.1 for about 12 hours now and only slight improvements.

Most of these are to safari. 8.1 brought the speed back but I still had a problem with tabs reloading (edit-due to crashes) and just general 'stickiness' with webpages when scrolling etc. 8.1.1 seems to have improved this and made it more stable. Links are now responsive when touching them rather than having to move the page slightly.

Keyboard lag seems to be much reduced. Apart from that not much improvement. The UI is quick but that happened in 8.1. I was hoping it would become slicker but, no, when I return to the home screen from safari or another app it still judders horribly during the animation.

On my iPad mini (original) the update has noticeably improved things. Not perfect but responsive and happy with it.

Iphone 6? No noticeable changes.

I agree.

I really don't know why I updated my iPad.

If I kept iOS 7, I would have been able to keep using iPhoto as well, which to this day I haven't found a true replacement for.

Oh well.

I finally upgraded to an ipad air. If you have a 3rd Gen I would highly recommended it. Miccenter is blowing them out cheep for the next few days. I picked up a 64gig cellular for 399.

I also wish I'd not upgraded my iPad 3 to iOS 8.

Surfing is the worst part. You click something and need to lick several more times for it to actually register. Then wait a week or two for it to actually do whatever it is you've asked it to do.

It's not unusable. But it is vastly reduced the user experience and made using my iPad far less enjoyable.

Thankfully it still just about managed the things I need. And I will be upgrading next year.

I had a similar experience with a 2nd generation iPad when iOS7 came out. It was rendered unusable. I had to get rid of it and replaced with the iPad mini retina (2013) that I have now and which still works fine with iOS 8.

.

Isn't it horrible that Apple tells you their upgrades will improve performance but it does the exact opposite?

Isn't it also horrible that there is no way to go back?

Sounds like false advertising to me.

If only someone would do a lawsuit.

You can't win really. You have iOS users complaining about lack up downgrades for devices that struggle and android users complaining about lack of upgrades for phones that could handle them easily.

Thing is if you don't update your iOS some apps don't run. You get the 'this application needs iOS 8 or later' type error.

At the end of the day Apple are a business and they make more money when people are forced to upgrade due to slow performance. They're not about to change that and miss out on a massive slice of revenue.
