The only issue I am having with IOS8 on Ipad 3 is I am not getting some push notifications but I think that is because some of the app developers haven't updated.

The one major app I use that was broken on OS8 was Splashtop, which was updated with iOS 8 support the other day and now works fine. But there are a number of other less important apps that remain broken because I guess the deevlopers have already stopped supporting them anymore. They sure give up pretty fast on some and they never let the users know that they went out of business or whatever (guess that would be pretty impractical for them to do).

iPad3 is smooth again in iOS 8

My iPad3 severe lag was resolved. Had regretted upgrading to iOS8 but now my iPad3 resumed >80% of its original speed. Here's what i did.

1. Open a few webpages in Safari (i had 6 tabs openned)
2. Go to the last tab on the right & "pinch the page" with 2 fingers (the screen will reduce into 6 mini tabs).
3. Select any one of the mini tabs.

When Safari resumed normal size after Step 3, my iPad3's regaining 80% of it's original zappiness like magic. All other apps can scroll smoothly again.

I'm a happy iPad3 (iOs8) owner again, since 30minutes ago. :)
It worked for me. may it work for you too.

***now i wonder if i should risk upgrading to iOS 8.0.2, after regaining the smoothness. Will you?

I upgraded my mom to a iPad 3 from an original iPad last year (gave her my 3 when I got an Air). She complained that her "new" iPad seemed slower than her old one. She also didn't like the look of iOS 7 in general, but that is a different thread.

Now I'm trying to decide wether to go to iOS 8 as I really would like to do Family Share. I know the iPad 3 is slower with 7 than it was with 6, but didn't think there would be a big difference between 7 and 8.

It is markedly slow. Safari has serious issues, reloads pages often. Apps seem slower to load and noticed some glitchy animations. I may delete all content and settings and try to start from scratch to see if it helps any.

Safari on iOS 8 has some sort of memory leak - the more you use it the slower it gets until it will eventually just freeze. Closing the app doesn't fix the problem, neither does doing a turn off and on. I have found that only a hard reset will make Safari go back to normal speed but again, the more you use it the slower it gets.

It is worse on my iPad 3 but you see it happening on my iPhone 5s too, but the processor muscles through it better.

Where did you get this procedure from?

I try it out of boredom...and it works.

Thanks mate

This is why I have a retina mini for iOS 8, and kept iOS 6 on my iPad 3.

iOS 8 on A5 and A6 devices seems OK, until you go back to one with iOS 6. So fast :D

I've got two iPad 3's and on both the graphics are stuttering and overall the experience is horrible. Likewise with my 5s. And this is with clean installs on all. Have downgraded back to 7.1.2 on all my devices. It's not perfect and not my preferred iOS, but a better experience.

I have to say that since upgrade my iPad 3 to ios8 it feels faster and smoother, especially the animations. I always through it performanced poorly on ios7 and the ios8 update feels more optimised.

Same here. Had so many bugs and lag on iOS 7, ios 8 fixed almost all issues except music sync.

I have found very noticeable lags when switching apps, going to the overview (double click home button), etc.

Otherwise my iPad 3 seems to work fine with iOS 8.0.2

Looking forward to 8.1

Considering Apple chirps on about how many of their users are on the latest iOS version, you'd think they'd make it usable for all those people

iOS 8.0.2 on my iPad 3 is awful.
Huge lag when typing, particularly in landscape.
Huge lag when rotating orientation.
Lag when entering multitasking
I've had several resprings out of nowhere
Safari becomes unusable and won't allow input into the address bar
Installing apps now seems to take much longer

I'm not entirely surprised because the iPad 3 is a product I am embarrassed to have bought and would been even more embarrassed if I'd made and sold it. A complete disgrace. I will be waiting to see if the iPad Air 2 has 2GB of RAM which might make safari usable. If not I'll just be binning my iPad 3 and updating my MacBook Pro with the money instead

Incredible, but true. WOW!!!

I don't know why, or if it will last, but bluegorilla's suggestion seems to have improved my iPad 3 performance too. Anyone know where this fix comes from or why it works?

I have a theory. The GUI uses, I believe, core animation stuff in concert with the GPU. I have noticed that sometimes the first time some sort of GUI animation is not always fluid. But if the action is repeated it is smooth. I am assuming that it is because the second time it is some how cached. Perhaps when you perform the safari stuff it is doing some sort of caching for the animation engine.

Of course this is just an educated guess and I could be completely wrong!

:D

On my iPad 3 I had been running jailbroken iOS 6 happily until apps started requiring the newer version. Even though I had some premonition, I thought it's time. And "hey, it's Apple, they are known for valueing the fluid UX" (big mistake).
So I updated (and then once more to 8.1)...
Where previously was joy and pleasant experience is now irritation and annoyance. It's SLOW. App's drawer LAGS, switching lags, loading of apps takes more time, typing lags badly. So disappointing, more so now not being able to roll back.
More often than before I feel the desire to use my Nexus 7 (2013). And it's never been so fast! ;)

Apple values fluid user interfaces, but they can't fight the laws of physics. The A5X is simply too slow for a computationally and visually intense OS like iOS 8. I don't know how I feel about this, but one can argue that Apple should have never released the iPad 3- the vastly superior A6X was only six months away. Either way, there's not much Apple can do about iOS 8 for the iPad 3, except to not release it in the first place.

I upgraded last night. I think there has been some improvement over 8.02. Animations seem a little more fluid and scrolling in Safari is improved. Closing tabs in safari still stutters, but it also stutters to some extent on my rMini. My biggest issue remains that scrolling in FB and Twitter stutters badly. Not sure if that is an iOS issue or an app issue. Hopefully 8.2 will have additional performance improvements. My iPad 3 is still usable but not as fluid as it once was.

My ipad 3 is better after upgrading yesterday. I did have to reboot it...twice.
It still doesn't like updating apps. Verrry slow if not freezing altogether during updating. I've learned to update one/two at a time.
Waiting on my new ipad air 2.

8.1

I concur that 8.1 improved laggy issues, but didn't eliminate them on my iPad 3.

Improved things for me on a 3 significantly.

Ios 8-8.02 was poor. The whole thing was slow. A lot of keyboard lag and Safari particularly was dreadful. Really slow. I use my iPad mainly for web browsing so I wasn't happy.

8.1? Well its got rid of the lag. By lag i mean the ipad now responds quickly to what im asking it to do. Apps open quickly, it's responsive, and it seems like its old self. Obviously as an A5 device it's not going to be as quick as the newer hardware but it seems reasonable again now.

Keyboard lag has gone. Safari is noticeably faster at loading webpages and more stable. Safari will also hold 3/4 tabs open without refreshing. Not much... But better than before when it would refresh with 2 tabs in use.

Is it perfect? No. Animations still judder. That's the only gripe really. Not all the time but 50%? But I'm happy. It's functional again and not a PITA to use. I'm hopeful that with a few more updates, (probably final updates for the iPad 3?), it'll be optimised further.

Also, got a mini 1. Exactly the same there. Safari quicker than it was. More responsive. Animations judder.
