Its been safe since day 1

This.

iOS 8.0 was the stablest, least buggy *.0 release in years. It was perfectly safe, just as 8.0.2 is now.

8.0.1 had significant issues, but it it was pulled almost immediately and replaced with 8.0.2 very quickly.

8.0.2 is still laggy on mine and my wife's phones and I have installed multiple times. If I had it to do over I would wait. This is more laggy than any android I used, 7 was not laggy at all. Really smooth. I get freeze ups and have to hard reboot, never had it happen on 7.

I would personally wait at least until the next version if I were in your place.

Certainly not for everyone.

This sums up all the complainers when it comes to iOS.

This sums up all the complainers when it comes to iOS.

I've never upgraded a version of iOS that turned a completely functional phone into a device that randomly shuts down multiple times a day. And not even a blue screen of death or a proper shutdown ... just blanks completely to black and only responds when holding the sleep button to restart.

I've also never upgraded to a version of iOS with bugs so major that phone restores and setting up as new couldn't cure either. My 5S is a non-functional mess, and it's awesome that you're having a great experience but don't characterize the issues as "more of the same complaining."

This software launch has been my worst, personally. All of my coworkers on iOS 8.0.2 complain of multiple bugs and issues.

You can't deny though that this is the case most of the time.

Haven't found major bugs yet. Lots of annoyances, especially in the wifi department... But it works.

Is it safe?

I have an iPhone 5s and I'm afraid to download iOS 8.0.2... How is it? Are there any bugs left?

So far it seems different for different 5s owners (not sure why). Some have no issues, while others have. There will always be bugs in software. Some bugs are minor enough to ignore. Others (like wifi issues or cellular data issues) will impact productivity on your device.

If you do not need any of the new features in ios 8, I would stick with ios 7 to be on the safe side. If you really must have the new features, then it is a gamble you have to make.

I'm running 7.1.2 on my rMini and 8.0.2 on my 5S. I was waiting for 8.1 to upgrade my more important iPad but 8 has nice improvements and the iPad is starting to feel dated. Most isolated 8 issues (especially runtime and crashes) are OTA installed. Follow the advice in post 20 with a USB cable and your risks are minimal.

So it's ok on the 5s?? Still nervous about installing it. I also have a iPad 3 that I'm afraid to update...

I regret installing it on my 5s and wish I would have tried it while the 7.1.2 signing window was still open. Bugs and performance issues with safari. Would rather have the performance of 7.1.2 on my 5s than the new features of IOS 8 that I rarely use.

Don't

There is nothing of great advantage and plenty of bugs that I didn't have before. No wifi synching now. iBooks defaults back to white background every time I close it.

plus many ongoing problems like the debacle that is the Podcast app just keep ongoing.

Stay away.

Thanks.. I'm staying put.

Stuck with 6.1.3 on my iPad 3.

Been on iOS 8 with my 5s since the day it came out. Aside from some occasional drops and reconnects with Bluetooth (which 8.1 is supposed to fix), I have not had any issues.

Compared to iOS 7.0 through 7.0.3, iOS 8 has been a much smoother experience. No random resets, no Safari crashes, and the only app crashes have occurred on apps that already had problems with 7.1.2.

If you're nervous about installing, then don't. The main benefit for me with iOS 8 has been wi-fi calling. The other user-facing benefits with iOS 8 will slowly roll out as developers take advantage of the new APIs. Even though the UI remained much the same, iOS 8 is a huge update for developers. Lot of major changes occurring under-the-hood.

FWIW, I always restore my device to factory settings first before installing any major iOS update. Then I restore my apps, settings, and data from a backup using iTunes. I also use iTunes to do all of the minor interval updates, so that all of the system files are replaced at the same time, rather than the piecemeal approach used with the OTA delta installation.
