you're getting ahead now... the iPhone 7 will have the 5MP. Apple needs to go step by step no jumps allowed. #GetThatMoney
Apple doesn't have to wait until next year's model to have 5MP, they can skip right to it just like they skipped 1.2MP and 3MP in the iPod touch. The minimum number of megapixels they've had for 1080p video recording in an iOS device is 5, so that is the most likely. Not to mention that they've never had a camera that can do panoramas with less than 5MP.

New cameras?

Something will have to give though so Apple can keep its margins in tact. Because Schiller said so.

Probably start with a 8 GB model phone instead of 16.

Then go with 32 and 64.

About time... Also The camera needs to be centered. It would be nice if both cameras were centered.
I don't think they should move the camera at all. Sometimes I need to take pictures really close in the corner off walls or close proximities & the camera angle works perfect. I would not be able to take the close in corner pictures with the lense in the middle. Plus I make NO difference . You still take Normal pictures the way it is... If It's not broken don't fix it...... LEAVE IT ALONE...!!!!

1080p on the front ? Now users will not only see themselves more better, but thanks to flash, will be blinded by the light. :D

Such joy.

Next Keynote.
Phil Schiller: Now, you can fill your new iPhone 16GB faster
People applauding enthusiastically

They'll likely introduce the 8GB model again, because keep this quote in mind:
Schiller also said that using 16 GB storage for lower-end models allows Apple to save money for use on higher-end components in other parts of the device, like the camera.

Don't want them to break the bank for me.

So it looks like all the apple money saved by not using 32gb as the baseline storage is put to a good use, to upgrade the front facing camera huh. Alright then.

So... a $650 iPhone 6S is getting an improved 1080p Facetime camera, while a $1299 rMacbook gets a 480p Facetime camera. GOTCHA...

Hey it takes lots of money to build one USB-C port into the macbook. Think about margins. Apple will get bankrupt if you ask for 720p camera. Those cameras are quite expensive.

Who takes pictures with a MacBook?
it's about front facing camera..so for video calling, conferences, so yes macbook has a 480p...and the iphone will get forward with 1080p?
what a shame. and they call it the reinvented notebook, thats the future, so all the macbooks will get now 480p??

Yeah, a 720p webcam should standard on any laptop or smartphone in 2015. All I can think of is that Apple wanted to save a 720p webcam for next year's rMacbook. Doesn't really makes sense so I don't know Apple's rationale for this.

High resolution front camera is a bare necessity these days. Common Apple, put at least 5 MP.

Not only did we revolutionize the way you take selfies, we removed the unnecessary back camera to make the iPhone 6Selfie a thinnest phone ever made, we moved the display to the back of the phone so that your friends will have a live view of the selfie you're about to take. It's magical.
LOL...

I wanted to buy a DSLR camera for photography and videography. Would this new iPhone be the way to go now? I can't make a decision.
The short answer is, "No, and not even close."

The iPhone 6 Plus (the best iPhone camera sensor thus far) is a bit smaller than 5mm x 4mm. It's quite dense for it's size and contains about 8 megapixels and some software magic to clean up the images a bit. An *ENTRY LEVEL* DSLR even with a minimal non-zoom lens will let in over 2x as much light with an aperture of maybe 1.8 instead of 2.2 (this is an exponential scale, not linear), a 24mm x 16mm sensor, and something upwards of 20 megapixels. The iPhone also has no optical zoom of any kind... they have a fixed (~29mm, adjusted) focal length... There are a lot of other factors to consider.

If you are serious about photography, you'll see more of the limitation as you learn the craft. It is, of course, much more complex than my paragraph above but in every way a DSLR is capable of significantly better pictures than you will get form an iPhone. Don't get me wrong... you CAN take great pictures with an iPhone and a great photographer can take a great picture with any camera. You just have far fewer options and no real ability to get what photographers call "digital negative" raw files (.NEF/.CR2) that a DSLR can provide.
