When I see a post like this I usually check it against the Google Analytics accounts I have.
What I'm seeing today for the first 1/2 of January is:

Windoz 31.6%
iOS 28.5%
Android 24.68%
MacOS 11.16%
Linux 1.6%

iOS 9.x 71.6%
iOS 8.x 19.6%
iOS <8 8.8%

Android 5.x 51.3%
Android 4.x 45.2%
Android <4 3.44%

I'm therefore skeptical of the 75% claim by Apple for 9.x especially since my 8.x stats are an exact match.
Could be that Apple isn't counting anything < iOS7.
I'm seeing a range of iOS as low as v3.2.2

Android seems a lot less fragmented these days than it did in the past.
That was one of my excuses for not porting my iOS Apps to Android.
Need to stop using it. :)

Those figures will be skewed somewhat by the tracking blockers in Firefox and others.
Shouldn't affect the iOS numbers though.

Or maybe you just see a small biased part of the world (proper sampling is key) and your stats are bunk.
Think about that one.

Android's stats are way way worse than that; funny how you didn't question those hey?
Most people by far are still on Android 4, that's a fact.
Why? Because their phones can't update.

PROUD 7% on my iPhone 5S

The iPad Air, that is almost always within 10 feet of a charger, is open to upgrading to the latest and greatest.

Fool me once, with your crippling iOS updates for iPhones, Apple ...

People are proud of odd things nowadays.

No.

The point is that a developer sees that and knows that he/she can use iOS 8 API's and the App will be available for 94% of iOS users. And they can call iOS 9 API's and that functionality will be available for 75% of users.

If an Android developer DARES to use Marshmallow API's, the App will only be available to 0.7% of the users, meaning it's not commercially viable.
And if you knew anything about Android development, you'd knew a lot is available in older versions in the support library.

Beside developers and power users (and Apple because they can brag about it) majority doesn't give two ***** about "software versions". If they're happy with their phone, they'll leave it be. The iOS 9 adoption was boosted by lying of better performance and a ****** bait called 9.1 - it included NEW EMOJI.

Can I ask if you own an older apple device, say and iPhone 4S or iPad 3? So talking from experience ? Or do you just own more current models where iOS 9 works well on?

I own both, iOS 9 on iPhone 6S plus..... A dream! iOS 9 on iPhone 4S ...crippled . I'd love to rollback many of my older devices to iOS 7, 8+ has been bad....

I run iOS 9 on my iPad 3, and it continues to work just fine. I still use some old iPods that can't run 8 or 9.

Generate sales to newer hardware??? just a guess.
More likely the inability to get the software to run on older hardware. Like trying to run digital TV programming on an old analog TV.

Still going strong with an iPhone 5 running iOS 6. It's fast (reminds me of the good ol' "It Just Works"), my battery life doesn't suck, and so far I only had to delete one app due to the developers telling everyone running <iOS 8 to go to hell. Sure, there are some new features I would like to have, so maybe i'll get the new 4" iPhone coming out in a few months. All in good time; i'm sure as hell not letting Apple slow my device down with updates that have no place on a phone from 2012.

Unlikely to be true, as written in the headline. As Apple explains, this number is derived from their App store. I suspect that users of older devices running older versions of iOS are much less likely to be accessing the store. The number is useful for developers and headline writers: less so for the rest of us.

They use the stats there, but they are mainly for developer purposes.

Yes, it's great not having so many iOS versions around, but at what cost? Apple force their users to update, so developers choose iOS over Android in order to earn money and give away part of it (that's the business after all). However, in doing so Apple is putting us all in a ****** ship and sending us packed to the land of Buggyland.

Not sure how that relates to what I was talking about ...

You said that Apple proudly display this statistics and mock on Android during their keynotes in order to convince and attract developers.

All I say is that in that effort of concentrating all their users on a single version of iOS and getting as much money as possible, they are screwing their devices and therefore their users.

I said no such thing actually. I said that these satistics are there mainly for developer purposes, the fact that Apple uses them for something else during some keynotes is separate from that.

Yes, there is the support library, but can only provide so much. The support library won't make your app backup like Android M allows you, can'd you can't use the fingerprint sensor too.

And NEW EMOJI is important for non-power users as well as some developers.

They didn't lie about improved performance, go look at browser benchmarks, for example.

Sorry, but buggyland my *ss, you speak like Android or Windows Phone have no bugs, or like Apple makes iOS from ground-up each year.

Give me an example where people with iPhone 4 experiencing: "virus that deletes all your family photos because of a security hole?" And what happens to the claim that iOS and malware are partically stangers?

There is no virus that deletes photos, because Apple updates their software when security holes are found. Its just a matter of time. It was an example of what could happen. I was being facetious.

Fair enough. My experiece with an iPad 3 was awful, and I bought an iPad Air 2, world of difference.

Old iPods are great, and work seamlessly , they never got software updates that the hardware could not handle. My original iPod is a better experiece than my iPad 3 / iPhone 4s to navigate to and play music

Haven't you seen the clusterf**k of bugs and glitches that iOS and OS X have turned into?

Nice play there comparing to Android or Windows. I use just previous versions of iOS as a standard, when there was Jobs, not the competition.

Emoji and power users in the same sentence ha ha ha ha!!!

cheers for the laugh.....

FYI: power user has nothing to do with emoji, everyone uses that crap!

Seems like the use was with "non" there when it came to power users.

iOS 9 and all the .X are the worst in the history of iOS. My phone is almost not useable at times. Mission Control doesnt swipe up until I do a force restart and I can't click apps on the home screen until I hit home again (for some reason). It's full of bugs and Apple should be ashamed.

Sounds like you have bigger issues than most with iOS 9 and that perhaps something else might be in play there.

Apple needs to make sure that the current IOS will work as advertised on all the devices they list as upgradable. Or they need to have away users can rollback to the previous versions. I would really like to hear Apple's explanation as to why the above should not be an option.

That very BS policy is what made me jump ship from iOS all-together.

It completely obliterated my iOS device upgrade path (I have 4), and put my trust in Apple in the toilet.

Until Apple fixes that crap (among other things) I will NEVER buy an iOS device again. Ever.
[doublepost=1452716416][/doublepost]
If each update get worst what is the point of updating and what's the point of reminder of updating?

Because Apple fans (myself included) WANT to believe that THIS time will be different.

That THIS time it will work like they say they will.

Because we're so addicted to Apple that it DOESN'T MATTER how many times they screw us over with this BS, we still hope that they will finally give us what we want THIS TIME.

What's the part of "non" you don't understand?

And do you think only power users use iOS?

And do you think only power users use iOS?

why don't you reread what you wrote and my reply ...... It's not difficult, and makes sense. When you say "non" power users....you are also referencing power users....geez! It's the people who are not power users....you are making a comparison !

Wait..... What do you think is a power user?

Let me help you.

  1. A power user or experienced user is a computer user who uses advanced features of computer hardware, operating systems, programs, or web sites which are not used by the average user.
How on earth do you come to a conclusion that power users don't use emoji?

The whole notion that use of emoji is determined if a user is a power user or non power user is nonsense to me.....hence my reply to your comment which made me laugh ;) lol

So is the concept that iOS is for power users....it's made for you average user, emoji entertains kids....and adults alike

Power users and iOS are irrelevant to your statement, it's about emoji and power users....

Okay....

When one says "emoji is important to "non" power users" they are making a comparison to power users.

Hence my reply saying that using emoji with a comparison to power users made me laugh..... It's nonsense that use of emoji is determined by ones proficiency of iOS......

Why would a power user not enjoy using emoji??
