When it all started we just wanted to make a phone call.

When did the medium become more important than the message.

The UI now has to entertain like some gateway drug video game. ;)

From a designer's perspective, it's clearly the best designed GUI. Things just naturally become stale if you constantly look at them. Same reason that great songs lose the spark and flare after many listens. All mobile OSes share this same fate, it's fine.

Same reason relationships go stale. ;)

I'm a designer.

The best designs always stand the test of time. iOS definitely is a boring UI design. Its basically Android's app drawer and nothing else.

I think the youtube dude has a point, with this exception. JellyBean does not add a lot of features. He's comment at how had lots of changes, the biggest benefit as I see JB is project butter which has improved android quite a bit and of course Google now.

Apple has not made any major updates to iOS, it virtually looks and behave the same way since the original version. Its human nature to get tired of the same old same old.

This.
an os is not there to entertain you.

It is about the apps. Ios has plenty of apps. The os itself is a platform, if you rely on an operating system to provide you with daily entertainment you really need to get a life.
Before long, people will be moaning and complaining how boring Android has become, and they'll be reeling back to the superior iOS devices with their tails between their legs!

Apple shouldn't allow their home market to hold them back.

I use NFC payments every day.

never seen a store or anything which supports NFC. then again, most of europe doesnt even use credit cards lol

i wish apple would add something besides the "app drawer", a simple and quick way to look at things u use all the time and updates by itself without having to find and click on the app first. hell, they could add some widgets to the search screen for all i care, i dont think i ever use the search screen at this point unless i swipe to it by mistake.

It's like with all new things, at first they feel fresh but once you get used to it it becomes boring. Apple haven't changed iOS design since 2007 (except new icons to keep up with retina) so it feels outdated.

Android is different from device to device and you can customize it but if you use it for more than two years you will realize that it gets boring as well. Of course switching to latest version or different phone to spices things up and this is something iOS can't be proud off.

I highly doubt you are after posting that. iOS has aged very well, and the UI is just so meticulously crafted. It's clear they have many talented designers.

iOS is boring. It's boringly reliable and boringly easy to use, just how I like it. Everything is simple to do and just flat works. I don't want to be entertained or interested by the OS. It needs to just hang in the background and work reliably. It's the apps that "entertain" you.

I wouldn't mind new icons, but as far the OS goes, I don't see anything wrong with it. The concept of a stale OS is a bit weird to me. If it does its job, and does it well I don't see the need to change it up. Refinement should be the goal.

I did not ask if they are going to include it (the links are all rumor and conjecture anyway). I asked about what specific locations would you utilize an NFC enabled device here in the US. If it is a need for you, where will you use it on day one?

OP,
if you don't agree or disagree with the video, then what's your stance on this? And why post it in the first place if you don't care one way or another?

And to keep the thread going, if all you want is new looks and themes and skins, than I guess Android has had the most dramatic change over the last few iterations.
But if what you want is consistency and solid performance, better compatibility and a smoother experience across the board, than iOS is what you want. I care more about the productivity I have with my iPhone than any visual stuff so i'm ok with how iOS has been progressing. Would I like some themes and customization? Sure, but not bad enough to give up all the other advantages of iOS or to jailbreak.

I am currently an android user (I use OS X instead of windows though) and I agree with most points in this thread. IOS when it came out was perfect. No one really knew how to use a smartphone so it being simple made sense. Now that everyone knows how to use a touchscreen it needs to be redesigned to make it a little less boring. I had an iPhone 4 and while it was an amazing phone, I wanted to have a choice. I like larger screens, widgets, live wallpapers etc. When I turn on my phone it feels like a new experience every time.

I just came across this video on YouTube: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=39w0ha1TD6c&list=UUR0AnNR7sViH3TWMJl5jyxw&index=4&feature=plcp

The techie talks about how iOS has just become boring and software wise Apple needs to do some major changes.
What do you guys think about his claims? What did you wish iOS had that it doesn't (and maybe Android has)?

I'm not agreeing or disagreeing with him.

I can't watch anything Rettinger does. He used to be bearable but he loves the sound of his own voice way too much now.

I'm not Ms Cleo, I can't predict what the credit companies will do with NFC tech once it is available. If so, I will use it to as much of its capabilities allow. :)

(in the future, be more clear on what you're asking and less arrogant, it will serve you well in life :) )

Namaste

I don't find it boring. It's better than having a completely different UI every time there's a x.0 update. I like how each update has kept a consistent UI.

I thought we already got over this technology phase of development. Remember the animated icons of the late 90's? They showed up and disappeared. In the end, we want the OS experience to be a boring experience that simply works efficiently every time. We really want a strong root system from which apps can branch out. Allow us to find our applications and data easily and efficiently, and we'll be happy. If you're bored, it's because you're too focused on the operating system and not the applications it supports.

All this rant about how boring iOS is and yet his favourite app in iOS was the old youtube app ?

That was a head scratcher for me as well

In the limited amount of time I've seen his work I've ascertained that I have zero respect for his presentation skills, industry knowledge and persuasiveness. Tech Buffalo means nothing to me.

His voice is rather irritating...
