So just so we are clear... you think that Apple maps as of July 26, 2012 is superior to Google maps as of July 26, 2012? if so,

No, we think that 3D imagery in the beta version of Apple Maps looks better than the 3D imagery in the final version of Google Maps.

This thread is about Google Earth adding 3D cities and how they compare to the 3D cities in Apple Maps.

The other poster was simply pointing out that Google Maps fans have been quick to bash the beta version of Apple Maps, however this coupled with great turn by turn navigation shows that it's making great strides even before it has been released. As an apple fan on apple forums shouldn't you be celebrating this? Or have you come from the depths of the 'sub forum' ;)

I love my iPhone, but I call a spade a spade. Google > Apple in the mapping department for now. Which is too bad, because maps is one of my most frequently used apps.

I agree with you completely, however you are missing the point of this thread. The Apple Maps vs Google Maps has been done to death. We are talking about the implementation of 3D city data.

So why don't you call a spade a spade and agree that apples is visibly better?

Well, I was really referencing what ProphetX said when he said "maybe now google maps fanboys will shut it" as if to indicate that because Apple's 3D mapping (which hasn't been released to the public yet) is better than Google's (which has). This seems silly if the sum of Google's maps is still better than the sum of Apple's maps... and I think it obviously is so.

Also, while I think overall, Apple's 3D imaging looks a little better than what I've seen so far from Google's... look at the road and trees in some of those picture comparisons. Google's look far superior to Apple's.

Here's some screenshots comparing Google Maps and Apple's Maps. I have to hand it to Apple, the quality of the photography is amazing compared to Google!

Lol yea okay, it pains you doesn't it? The trees and road in the first 2 pics are better in the Apple Maps screenshot, particularly the trees. Or how about the shot with the apartment complex that had a pool in the middle?

Also bare in mind that I didnt go looking for specific scenes to screenshot, I simply zoomed in on a random building. Each time the Apple version looks noticeable better and more detailed. I can post plenty more if you are still struggling with the obvious?

One thing I noticed: I really like the fact that Apple removes cars and pedestrians from the street. Looks cleaner.

Like I said, overall the 3D mapping in Apple's is better. But in that first comparison of what I guess is a building in Los Angeles, the road looks much clearer in the Google picture. To me that is pretty obvious.

I feel like the overall quality of Google's maps is far superior to that of Apple's. Where Apple may have a small advantage in the 3D mapping, Google has a large advantage in the 2D mapping. If we lump in Google Streetview as part of the 3D mapping, then Google would win that battle and it wouldn't even be close. I'll take 80% of the detail in 3D mapping and full streetview over what Apple's offering any day of the week.

Look, if you want to believe that Apple's maps are better than Google's maps as of right now, then go ahead and believe it. Just realize that the vast majority of the world disagrees with you, and for good reason.

It doesn't even matter how poor Google's 3D implementation is. The fact that they said it will only be available on their Google Earth app and won't be coming to Google Maps on either iOS or Android means it will be a loser anyway. Who wants to use separate apps for that? Where's the nice integration like Apple is doing in their new Maps app?'

This I agree with. Google really should just combine maps and earth. Give us 6 or 8 different viewlayers to look at... 2D, 45 degree, 3D, street view, terrain, etc. etc.

There's really no reason (that I can see) to separate them any longer. The edges of what should go in maps and earth is being blurred.

In some of the pictures it seems like the reverse is true. Looks like in the first examples posted, Google removed cars and Apple didn't. It might just be a function of if cars were there when the pictures were taken. Who knows?

Again we are talking about the implementation of 3D cities nothing more. If you want to talk about the maps app as a whole this is the wrong thread.

However a thank you for at least (begrudgingly) admitting that Apple's 3D cities look better :)

...then eventually game me this even though there are no open apps running in the background............

Starting to feel that Google rushed this a little to outdo Apple resulting in a poorer quality expereince :(

Also seeing a lot of graphical artefacts on Google Earth. The Hollywood sign refused to load at all. Other buildings have glitches, shimmering, etc when changing the viewing angle.

Wow, the difference on the ipad is even greater. I was trying to compare on the iPhone but I will have to wait till I'm on my wifi because Google earth takes forever to load the 3D images. The detail in the Apple 3D maps is really nice. I haven't put iOS6 on my iPad yet but I'm looking forward to it after seeing these pics. My guess is I have a little bit of a wait before they do Arkansas in 3D.

I know is a little bit offtopic, but Google announced that it would bring Maps in 3D for the iOS, presumably this Google Earth is the one.
But since Apple is replacing Google Maps with it's own Maps option, I can't say for sure, but didn't Google said something about maping/navigation/3D on its presentation last month? It just seems wierd Google would drop iPhone market in terms of Maping. Unless they what to use Google Earth as the replacer for it... although I don't think its comparable to it's own Google Maps app.

As far as I am aware Google Maps will come back to the iPhone as a standalone app giving people the choice to use either.

As for Google's 3D cities, I am also confused if these are just for Google Earth or if they will be added to the standalone Google Maps app as well.

I stuck this on my phone then took it off. Its nice on the iPad but its definitely been released to disrupt Apples launch as a majority would have seen this before Apples maps which are still in beta and for devs accounts only.

I have to say I did enjoy touring Rome yesterday. Look forward to Apples version done properly.

I'll chime in here. I don't have an iphone, but I can tell you that Google is still in the middle of uploading hi(gher) resolution images for some cities and towns on their web client.

I would imagine that this would also go for their mobile versions.

If anything, you iphone users should be happy that you at least have a choice on which application to use.

Apple's images may look better, but I would be surprised if they covered as much of the earth as Google Earth.

Choice is a good thing.

Apple Maps currently has MORE 3D cities than Google earth even though its in Beta. I agree though its good to have the choice.

The choice is important, but at the moment Apple's 3D Maps look immensely better than Google's.

The Google 3D looks pretty poor next to Apple's. No wonder Google was too ashamed to bring this to their Maps application and put it in Google Earth instead.

This is pure speculation and wishful thinking. Google has not confirmed this to my knowledge.

Furthermore, if you click an address in safari, it's going to open it up in Apple maps, not Google maps... and that I can all but assure you won't be optional. So while we will have a "choice" (maybe), Apple will make the user experience annoying enough to where it isn't really a fair fight. We will always have a "choice" to use Google Maps in a browser, but most of us agree that isn't really a good solution.

Apple's maps look pretty poor next to Google's maps but they are touting it as a big new feature in iOS 6. I guess some companies embarrass easier than others?

Even if you only get Apple-limited-free-choice type, that would be good. I won't expect that Apple would let you define the "default" apps, this never was the "company motto" (with a few exceptions probably). But at least an alternative app they should allow, and hopefully it would be Google.

I really doubt that Apple will achieve in so little time the coverage that Google has achieved and I'm not even restricting to 3D.

From what Apple has done this last years concerning software and hardware, we can expect a great version of maps competing with Google Maps. Just not in 2012, but in a near future.

Although I'm saying this, I really hope I'm wrong and Apple delivers an outstanding maps app in 2012 fall capable of surpassing Google Maps and therefor increasing competition.

Isn't Google Earth basically a gimmick? who actually uses Google earth for something PRACTICAL (except maybe News studios)?

Waste of space on an iPhone when you have Google Maps.

In fact, all of 3D is a gimmick, both Apple and Google. Why are they spending resources on this? Why doesn't Apple focu on fixing their 2D maps and Google release a standalone Maps (not earth) app?
