Why doesn't Apple focu on fixing their 2D maps and Google release a standalone Maps (not earth) app?

My guess they probably are. The problem is: It's competition.

You'll only see results of Apple Maps apps with final changes and tweaks or Google Maps with 3D and who knows what more near the iOS6 release.

Until then, little to nothing we will see of the full power from both apps, regarding coverage and usefullness of the app itself.

wait apple maps vs google earth?

I dont see the comparison unless u meant google maps.

I meant google maps. And what i was referring to was the fact that everyone was trashing Apple Maps 3d content and assuming it would not even compare in terms of quality to the 3d content that GOOGLE provided period. And just to clarify i mean both google maps and google earth.

BTW what is the point of google earth? Just merge the damn thing with google maps already.

Pointless to have 2 separate apps that provide damn near the same content minus a few features.

BTW when i zoon all the way out in apple maps i damn near get everything that is offered in google earth.

One thing I noticed: I really like the fact that Apple removes cars and pedestrians from the street. Looks cleaner.

I also thought this is a great detail as well. Makes everything look more like a mapping app instead of a picture app if you know what i mean.

As for the point, it gives you an incredibly detailed photo realistic 3D view of a city. If you think that is pointless then that must mean that detailed satellite imagery is pointless as well

I'm wondering the same thing, so would you mind answering the question directly? What is the practical use of the 3D mapping? How will you use it?

Honestly, I don't have any hidden agenda. If 3D is moreover a nice little app which most people only use a few times a year then I question why Apple would assign any resources to it until they have their true street mapping perfected. I'll use maps infinitely more than some 3D view.

So please tell how I might incorporate 3D view into my usage. I want to know how it will be useful to me.

- is this only available on the 4S?
- anyone got a list of cities google has so far?

Yes, iPhone 4S and iPad 2 or later only. I don't know about a list of cities though.

Apple beta version is more stable than Google's.

Apple maps will make Google Earth obsolete as well. View attachment 350005

A "low on memory error" in iOS? That's new to me. Of course it would happen in a Google app. :p

I usually dont chime in much but I had to. Prophet....you are nuts if you think Apple maps is even half as good as google maps since you said you are lumping earth and maps together. I use my iphone as my daily phone with ios6 and a S3 for work bc its easier to type for me.

What people don't understand is looks doesn't equal brains. The IOS6 and maps look BEAUTIFUL but....have you tried to do anything functional with apple maps? Have you traveled out of town and tried to find POI's using maps?? Someone on these forums said maps doesnt have all the data so I used waze with yelp as the search engine. Both experiences were Terrible!

While Maps does look better! it doesn't nearly give you close to the data google has. I would say Apple maps is a Young 20 year old hot Kate Upton while Google maps is a 40 year old smarter maybe not as good looking Sofia Vergara.

Also 3d view whether is earth or apple maps is just a gimmick anyways. What would u use it for??

Here's some screenshots comparing Google Maps and Apple's Maps. I have to hand it to Apple, the quality of the photography is amazing compared to Google!

Can't say you give Google a fair shake here, as the image is clearly from not fully rendered models. The actual scene looks a lot smoother.

That being said, it does appear Apple overall has better quality of the 3D rendering, but I cannot say either appears as very mature technology. Google's rendering suffer from glitches, and it's not like Apple's universally look good either. The swimming pool picture posted earlier looks like crap on both Apple and Google's versions, while most building textures simply look messy and slightly tiring to look at. Trees are green blobs. Ghosting not always dealt with in the most elegant manner. Building edges unnatural. This has a long way to go before it really gives a wow-factor (3D maps as such has been done before).

Since I don't have iOS 6 Beta, I can't compare Google and Apple directly with each other.

I have installed Google Earth on the iPhone 4s and the iPad 2.

I hate Google Earth. I find it buggy, slow. Also on the iPad 2 - the 'Guesturs' don't work. At all.

I cannot wait until iOS 6 is out so I can give Apple's version a try.

Google for me is a fail in their 3D maps department.

I know is a little bit offtopic, but Google announced that it would bring Maps in 3D for the iOS, presumably this Google Earth is the one.
But since Apple is replacing Google Maps with it's own Maps option, I can't say for sure, but didn't Google said something about maping/navigation/3D on its presentation last month? It just seems wierd Google would drop iPhone market in terms of Maping. Unless they what to use Google Earth as the replacer for it... although I don't think its comparable to it's own Google Maps app.

They said they would only be adding 3D to Google Earth. According to Google they don't have any plans to add 3D to their Google Maps applications on either iOS or Android. This was all stated in the rushed press conference they held right before Apple's WWDC unveiling of iOS 6 announcing they were dropping Google for Maps.

From the looks of what they put out so far, I can see why. The "running out of memory" errors are pretty bad for a released application and the 3D images themselves are pretty subpar compared to Apple's.

Oh didn't saw that. Thanks for the Info.

It's quite weird those "running out of memory". But every software has it's bugs and that'll probably be fixed soon. Google is just trying to get ahead of Apple in displaying those 3D Maps.

Although I'm yet to see any real day-to-day use of the 3D feature. Besides looking pretty and being able to check out any places you would like to visit, it won't be as useful as the Map application itself in 2D, it won't be activated as many times as the 2D. They are betting a lot on the 3D which I think is misplaced.

Well honestly, Google's 3D implementation really isn't very useful at all. Mostly because it's only in Google Earth and won't be in their Maps applications. The way Apple integrated it makes it more useful. And that's not even counting how much better they look or the fact that they already have more cities in 3D in a Beta than Google does in their full release.

I made my comments based on the detail and look of the 3d maps themselves. I live in sandiego google maps were terrible for me. I prefer the apple maps beta rather than using an outdated google maps. Traffic works perfect around here and is pretty accurate. Downtown San Diego, from what I saw last night is in 3d already.

I honestly feel that google maps should still be in beta right now since it isn't light years ahead of apple maps with all the time they've had to build.

Btw apple map's 3d view was perfect for bar hopping last night. Also everyone that I know that uses google maps would rather use the list view on that app rather than the actual map view.

Dang, apple looked sexy.

If only we could just combine the functionality and ability of google maps to Apple's gorgeous maps. It would be perfect.
