Surly?

Do you have a lightning cable coming out of your dash somewhere?

I'm just hoping someone hacks it so this will work right now with a aftermarket car stereo (hint, hint..)

Can you not just replace the system at least? Much cheaper than buying a car...

You could in certain cars. For example, the 2013+ Civic that they use in the photos on Apples website is very likely to be available to existing Civics just by purchasing a new head unit (and dash kit). It just will be expensive, most likely.

here is a pic of where my lightning cable is, inside the compartment.

Out of curiosity, I checked the Honda website.

Turns out the same model of Civic I got last summer, the EX, not only now comes with CarPlay touchscreen, but also a proximity keyless ignition/entry, blindspot monitoring, etc.... :(

That's 4 different Civics in 4 years.

I am almost certain you could purchase the head unit separately and make it work, though.

I wonder if I would pay for a genuine apple aftermarket head unit if they decided to make one? Or rather, how much would I pay?

That's not CarPlay in that Civic Honda but HondaLink, and its tied to Nokie HERE mapping though I have seen pictures of a CarPlay touchscreen. You can go to Honda's website and look up the Honda 2014 Civic to see what is offered. They mention HondaLink, not CarPlay. Maybe the same screen is used ??

I'd love to see a third-party Double-DIN (likely "Apple approved") deck you could just install yourself that basically works as an iOS in the Car unit. Nothing else.

I could see an "iOS in the Car" compatibility program happening for aftermarket units, eventually… if Apple is smart. Most people can't afford to buy a new car to simply use their phone in the car. Most of those interested could likely afford a ~$300 head unit to use the feature, though.

Yeah but if apple was to put out a double DIN deck, it would likely be quite expensive.

I always thought they should just put an ipad mini in the car optimized for iOS in the car
