This will be great. I for one love the App in the iPad. The Journals feature is great and i was able to build a journal from photo stream and publish it to the web to share with my bro in OZ. This is perfect and looks like it will replace the "Gallery" from MobileMe.

Don't worry photograph snobs, you still have Aperture

Interesting. I'm guessing it will be optimally used with the trackpad since it seems that is the direction Apple is going. What would be cool is if you could transfer pictures via a home's Wifi between the iOS and Mac version w/o going outside the program or app or having to use iCloud.

Yay! Let's dumb everything down even more! WTF has happened to apple... They used to have excellent products.

Have you even used the App? Its got much more to offer than the current iPhoto app for Mac.

Seriously. Everyone needs to get off the "Apple are dumbing down everything" bandwagon

You can publish the photo's to Photostream but I believe it lessons the MP.

Yes, I have. I have also used iPhoto 5-8, PS elements, Nikon NX, GIMP, and aperture 2. I can tell you without a doubt that the iPad iPhoto version was the least useful for me.

They really need to have iOS iPhoto sync up with Mac iPhoto. It doesn't make a lot of sense to have two separate libraries and force the users to do a bunch of legwork to keep them up to date. Ideally, we would have an option to back up our libraries to iCloud (iPhoto in the Cloud?) for a fee? The current solution is a bit rubbish, I think. /opinion

anything..and i mean ANYTHING will be better than the complete waste of space and dumbing down of the current iPhoto for mac.

They ripped its heart out compared to previous version....and messed everyones library up in the process.

That was a shocker from Apple...

Possible

I can see this happening. iPhoto is the consumer vehicle for Apple when it comes to photography. Much like the moves in Lion and future Mountain Lion, it appears that Apple are looking to increase likeness which in turn will encourage iOS users to have the confidence to move to the Mac platform.

For longer term Apple users it can feel painful as features are taken away or replaced with methods that don't suit the ways of working we've all got used to.

However, Apple are looking at a big picture, whereas most posters are looking at it from a personal point of view. The loss of a few customers for the addition of even more is a price worth paying for Apple.

There's also another reason for removing and stripping down apps. By effectively starting from scratch Apple are more able to manage their apps. They don't have to keep legacy cruft in their new apps, they simply say, its our way with the latest, or your way with the old version.

Just because proposed moves like this may not be welcome to all, I'm sure there's a lot of thought being put into changes like this by Apple. They aren't just picking ideas out of the air, they'll have a very well planned strategy for the years ahead, by only seeing things as they are released or speculated on its looks far less coherent than if we all had sight of the long term plan.

1. That is a slippery slope for Apple. They have changed so much with everything, that I have decided not to buy another computer from them. From me alone they lost another expensive hardware sale, an apple care subscription, future OS and Apple software upgrade money, profit from app store purchases, and free advertising. I used to tell everyone to get an Apple, as it really was so much better, but not anymore. From a brief overview I "sold" at least 5 iPhones, an iPad, an iPod touch, and 1 Macbook. Currently I am a young person, who will soon be studying to enter the I.T. field. Do you think I will suggest Apple computers to my future clients? No... From frustrating me alone they easily have lost several thousand dollars.

2. You would think that, but look at the Final Cut Pro X disaster. It was widely criticized, and panned by many. Look at the app store reviews. It has 1100 5 star ratings, but 800 1 star reviews. That is not good by any stretch of the imagination, especially for something that costs several hundred dollars.

That is true, but I think of that more of the exception though - Pro users who use products like Final Cut are very particular about what they want and their expectations in this case were incredibly high given how long they were waiting for a new release. Apple dropping the ball as much as they did certainly didn't help much but failures like that are very rare and tend to be more projected from people who feel personally disappointed based on expectations that were not to be.

Sure?

iPhoto for iOS is even more dumbed down and is cumbersome too. I really hope the Mac version doesn't resemble it.

Drama!

You know what's more frustrating?

Windows.

The thing that I REALLY did not like about the last release is how they changed the whole underlying folder structure. This required everything to be backed up again (in my case 150GB worth), taking double the space on the Time Machine backup. I just hope they never do that again.

Oh I hope they dont do this. This constant iOS integration into Mac OSX is really starting to piss me off.
If this trend, of apple constantly moving features from iOS to OSX, continues we will have 27" desktop iPads in a couple years. Its so annoying. Cant apple just have iOS and Mac OSX separate???!!!!! There is no need to make them similar.
ARGHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!

just my opinion

If you can afford to own a DSLR and trips to Europe, then just spring for the faster internet connection. Or you can use ipad's 4g connection and that is much faster than 1.5Mbps.

First and foremost I can't get a faster connection. Remember, we are talking about upload bandwidth here, not downloads. Also, I would go way over any caps imposed on a 4G iPad. Remember, one shoot will net me 3.7-6 GB of data...[/QUOTE]

First, I'm sorry about the way my reply sounded. I didn't intend for it to come across as rude. :) Second, I was trying to point out that your upload speeds are quite slow. I don't think iCloud can make a better experience for you with speeds that slow.

Are you really insinuating that the users disappointments were unfounded?
In a total of four years, Apple simply managed to remove features. I would be pretty pissed myself I was in the video business. Apple was better off doing nothing, then releasing a POS that angered perhaps their top customers.

But at least with Windows I have a choice for what I want to do. For example, Windows Vista was a drag, but I could choose to dual boot both the far better XP and Vista at the same time. Can I choose to boot both 10.6 with Rosetta support, which I need, and 10.7 at the same time? No, because Apple refuses to allow choice, and locks users in.

No no, it didn't come across as rude so you are fine. As said before, I can't really get faster upload speeds. Well, I can, but from 1.5 to 2 Mbps which is equally stupid. No ISP in my area has anything faster.

I some what agree with you. Compared to music, cloud for pictures, assuming each file around 15MB isn't too different from music. But I think, most would agree that your example of 250-400 shots per shoot is way above an average user. It wont work for you. Nothing will work for you.

That number actually sounds typical. My girlfriend and I had some friends from across the state over a few weekends ago, and between herself and me we managed 348 pictures. Sure it may have been over 2 days, but it's all just 1 event to iPhoto.

yay ... more limitations

the iPad version is horrible, you cant even delete and reorganize your pictures as far as i know

I just wish the iOS version would stay automatically in sync with your Cameraroll. If I even take 1 new photo, it has to sync photos, which takes ages.

Why are you comparing iPhoto to those other products?? Isn't this about iPhoto for iOS vs osx??

what exactly does it actually offer? Its horrible HORRIBLE on the ipad. You cant do the simplest thing like moving or deleting pictures/albums and resynching the whole library after every damn picture is taking forever

they need to stop dumbing everything down, people arent that dumb ... at least i hope so

iPhoto '11 seriously messed up many sensible & function elements of iPhoto. On my main machine I still have '09 installed because of this. The only way to describe '11 is that it's a dumbing-down so lets hope if they do update iPhoto soon it gets back some of the useful features taken by the last so called 'update'. Sadly however with Apples present track-record it's more likely to just go further backwards - i.e. - eye-candy increase, functionality decrease.

Apple's line of logic, probably: Why pay $14.99 for iPhoto when you could pay $79.99 for Aperture?

I don't know, I paid $199 for Aperture and wouldn't pay $79 for it now. It's more of a toy than a pro app but at least (for now) it still behaves like an actual desktop computer application.

Apple has become quite dillusional as to what their mac user base wants/likes due to the popularity of the iPhone and iPad. They think that their Mac user base wants their Macs to look and feel like iOS now just because of the popularity of their iDevices. WRONG!

By the way, I hate Lion 10.7 too. Hate it.
Snow Leopard is the last greatest OS for the Mac. Apple suffering from the grand dillusion.

That would be great. iOS iPhoto is much better than OS X iPhoto, IMO.

LOL, iPhoto for iOS is absolutely terrible. Utterly disorganized, and makes it impossible to know what is where. Editing tools are not labeled and make little sense.

Officially the hardest to use iOS App ever produced by Apple, and a major disappointment.
