Apple has become quite dillusional as to what their mac user base wants/likes due to the popularity of the iPhone and iPad. They think that their Mac user base wants their Macs to look and feel like iOS now just because of the popularity of their iDevices. WRONG!

By the way, I hate Lion 10.7 too. Hate it.
Snow Leopard is the last greatest OS for the Mac. Apple suffering from the grand dillusion.

Thank you. You have just managed to pen my thoughts exactly.

New iPhoto?

I'm not much of a photo editor and I mostly(like I'm sure most other people as well) just use iPhoto to store pictures and do very basic editing that iPhoto provides. The thing that I would like to see added is its own integrated video player. I don't like the fact that to watch videos I have stored in iPhoto to have to be played on another app. Unless I'm crazy and haven't noticed this feature, I would like something that finder already does(play either a preview of or the entire file when moused over).

Are you really insinuating that the users disappointments were unfounded?
In a total of four years, Apple simply managed to remove features. I would be pretty pissed myself I was in the video business. Apple was better off doing nothing, then releasing a POS that angered perhaps their top customers.

Not in the least. I was trying to say that the particular needs of Pro users made a bad situation much much worse. I remember the response. There was a ton of drama over it that dominated much more objective (if critical) discussion. Heck, I even admitted that Apple botched the release. It was a mistake. But such mistakes are a rarity for Apple and are the exception and not the rule.

My point is that Pro users had very particular needs and very particular demands. They made a ton of noise because they can. I have read tons of posts from people who make ridiculous claims that Apple is betraying them since they stayed loyal during Apple’s darkest days. It’s rather silly that people have such personal feelings over matters like this. Pro users are however a small minority of Mac users overall. I think they (pros) made a really bad situation a lot worse by basically adding uncessary drama. That doesn’t negate very valid criticisms from people, but that wasn’t the only thing going on. There was a great deal of entitlement going on.

You missed my point though - The debacle of Final Cut Pro is a very freakish exception to a major string of successes. Plus FCP is a different category App.

Finally, I don’t overall put a huge amount of weight on any rating system as an accurate representation of people’s opinions. People have complained about gaming the system before. I would much rather read level headed reviews that doesn’t tend to be reactionary.

I also agree word for word. I will be staying with 10.6 for the foreseeable future.

LOL, iPhoto for iOS is absolutely terrible. Utterly disorganized, and makes it impossible to know what is where. Editing tools are not labeled and make little sense.

Officially the hardest to use iOS App ever produced by Apple, and a major disappointment.
I agree. I have used most major photo editors and found the iPad iPhoto version to be the worst.

iOS greatness with OS X greatness.

I personally like where they're going and I seriously doubt that they're going to rewrite every OS X app to look like their iOS counterparts or turn OS X into iOS X. They are different and should remain so. I do like the fact that there is more integration and would like to see more of it. I would like to see the dock look more like launchpad. Sure, the dock has stacks, but I can put a folder in the dock on my iPhone and that feature would be great on OS X.

The last thing I want is an iOS like iPhoto app. I like what they did with mail, making it easier to work with, but not loosing any function. When I think of iOS apps I think of a simple app that has some functionality, looks great, and has great workflow. Many of these qualities are good, but not so for Mac Apps.

I don't have a problem if they make everything look like iOS. The only thing I expect from them is that that make everything faster or as fast as the earlier versions, and at least retain it's features.

When they make things look like their iOS counterparts, they make them slow, emphasising more on the graphics details and less on speed. And then they also end up dropping a few features, which they feel are too advanced for average users .

They ruined OS X, the current iPhoto, iCal and many other things this way. Now a days, I install an app only if it has the traditional grey chrome and style, and I am never disappointed.

What would work for me is to keep everything how it currently is. Apple is the problem, as they are removing any advanced features from everything they are "updating". Now everything is tailered to the extreme idiot clients, and powerusers are thrown under the bus. Seriously, take a look at everything.

10.6 - 10.7, massive loss of features.
Server edition even more so
iMovie HD 06 to 08, large loss of features
Final cut 7 to X, extreme criticism.
Airport utility, loss of many controls.
Removal of super drives from even desktop machines.
Etc and on and on

None of these make sense:

1. Massive losses from 10.6 - 10.7? Examples please? If you are referring to Mission Control theres no loss, its just a slightly different system than spaces. I can't comment on the server edition as I don't use it.

2. I can't comment on iMovie but Final Cut, I'll give you the release, but after the updates its receiving plenty of positive reviews.

3. Airport Utility is exactly the same as its always been. There are two versions, an easy version and a normal version.

4. Super drives are still there I'm not sure where you get this.

1. That is a slippery slope for Apple. They have changed so much with everything, that I have decided not to buy another computer from them. From me alone they lost another expensive hardware sale, an apple care subscription, future OS and Apple software upgrade money, profit from app store purchases, and free advertising. I used to tell everyone to get an Apple, as it really was so much better, but not anymore. From a brief overview I "sold" at least 5 iPhones, an iPad, an iPod touch, and 1 Macbook. Currently I am a young person, who will soon be studying to enter the I.T. field. Do you think I will suggest Apple computers to my future clients? No... From frustrating me alone they easily have lost several thousand dollars.

As someone who has been in the IT field for 10 years I can easily tell you that if you think this is bad you have no clue about supporting Windows in the workplace. If it was even close to a flawless experience you wouldn't have any job opportunities.

Have you even used the App? Its got much more to offer than the current iPhoto app for Mac.

Seriously. Everyone needs to get off the "Apple are dumbing down everything" bandwagon

a thousand times this.

i was quite nervous "only" to bring my iPhone and iPad along on my last vacation only to be absolutely amazed about the number of features of iPhoto for iOS.
You have so much more retouching features than on the mac client, the "journals" are an AWESOME way to keep your beloved ones up to date by sharing one via iCloud and the fact that all you need to transfer your pictures from your iPhone to the iPad is them being connected to a WiFi network (so you can use photo stream to get them onto the iPad) was just so amazingly easy.

iPhoto on the iPad isn't less powerful than on the Mac, just less cluttered.
When it comes to retouching, it actually offers MORE features. (tilt shift, 'retro filters', white balance, vignettes, color manipulation, you name it)

1.The first and most irritating issue to me is the lack of Rosetta. It was an optional download before so why change now. Other major losses that would effect me would be the deletion of iSync, Front Row, Spaces, and Expose, the inability to install XP via bootcamp, a far more unintuitive UI, and a loss of the ability to easily restore to a new HD. There are other issues, I am not going to search them out to post here. On the server issue, read this. Again, it seems less intuitive then before

2.iMove 6 HD was vastly superior to later versions. Again, apple removed advanced features

3.The airport manager has been ruined the most. Here is one quote from another MR user for what has been removed.
"Can no longer configure printers, can no longer see wireless and DHCP clients, lost IPv6, lost logs and stats, lost multicast rate, lost transmit power, lost wide channels, lost interference robustness etc etc etc"

4. Super drives are leaving. I can no longer get a mini with one, which is insane. Apple says get an external one, but now I need to pay even more money. They didn't lower the price of the computer to compensate.
5. Yes, I realize windows is ****, I have repaired plenty of FUBARed windows boxes. Apple has plenty of other problems of their own though. Really it is do I want hardware issues with an apple device, or software hell with windows. Both are unacceptable, but at least I personally can fix software issues. If my parts keep breaking, I am at the will of apple to replace stuff at a large premium.

what exactly does it actually offer? Its horrible HORRIBLE on the ipad. You cant do the simplest thing like moving or deleting pictures/albums and resynching the whole library after every damn picture is taking forever

they need to stop dumbing everything down, people arent that dumb ... at least i hope so

You can delete pictures. Use the really obvious "x"

Exactly. Well, at least me and you will enjoy it :) :apple:

Yay! Let's dumb everything down even more! WTF has happened to apple... They used to have excellent products.

My sentiments exactly.
What about all us pro users? Are Apple really that shortsighted as to slowly but surely forget us all????

Not impressed.

Wait wut? Videos play in iPhoto by just clicking on them. Not sure what you're doing to make them play elsewhere??

I'm a designer. And no, I don't even use iPhoto.

I'm merely commenting on the general direction Apple seems to be going.... average consumers over professionals. iPads and iMacs over MacBook Pros and Mac Pros... etc etc...

Probably best starting a new thread then or there is a good chance that idiots like me will get confused. :p

2. You would think that, but look at the Final Cut Pro X disaster. It was widely criticized, and panned by many. Look at the app store reviews. It has 1100 5 star ratings, but 800 1 star reviews. That is not good by any stretch of the imagination, especially for something that costs several hundred dollars.
I guess I better start shorting apple stock then. How will they ever survive without your patronage? ;)

How bout say, with the dollars of many other customers they will attract with these new features? :p

I hope that Apple integrates iPhoto into the Photos app on iOS, it makes no sense to have two apps considering they have the exact same function bar a few photo editing features on iPhoto.

I sure as hell don't. iPhoto for iOS requires an iPad 2 or an iPhone 4 or newer.

Integrating into this baseline would bar a large number of consumers for what? An image editing app for an iPad?

Leave it as a purchase add-on.

Apple tends to be disruptive in its approach to progress - they always have been. Some people work well with that, others don't. Microsoft has always valued the non-disruptive, backwards-compatible-for-as-long-as-possible approach. For you, the Microsoft paradigm seems to be the right choice and the classic model of corporate IT prefers this approach. That model is undergoing a radical shift though. All of the iOS "toys" (and Android toys for that matter) that many on this and other threads speak disparagingly about are transforming corporate IT in fairly radical ways. So while you may not recommend apple products, they will be a huge presence in your field of endeavor, despite your recommendations to the contrary.

As a professional software developer and amateur photographer, it would take a radical shift to move back to Windows. I (gulp) like the integration of ios features into Mac os and believe me, the os has only gotten more sophisticated, not less. I have as much fine grained control as I ever did and because I exercise that control more at the command line, the changes in windowing flow haven't bothered me much, though quite obviously (and I see some of the points) they bother others. I also personally like the disruptive approach, despite some of the pain, because it means I'm getting a more rapidly evolving os and I'll need to move on. Quite frankly, I'm happy to not be able to install XP ;-)

As a professional (software engineer), I find that I am still being catered to. MacBook pros are still wickedly sophisticated, nicely performing machines as are even the last round of Mac pros, old as they are. I don't find the iMac to be a toy either and it runs everything I throw at it - web servers, databases, IDEs,etc - very, very well. Interestingly, because like most of us, I'm also a consumer, I like a lot of the consistency of behavior across the apple ecosystem. I use the iPad and iphone for both work and pleasure - both are also very sophisticated machines. I have a broader ecosystem in which to work and play, something I really like.

Soo anyone know if this will cost more money like all of the other iLife upgrades or be a free upgrade? Since this will be the first Mac App Store app upgrade that Apple pushes in the Mac App Store?

Yay! Let's dumb everything down even more! WTF has happened to apple... They used to have excellent products.

iCloud as a whole is somewhat useless, but especially with photos and videos. I posted this before, but I will repost it.

Do you understand how large photos are? My low end DSLR makes files that are about 15MB a piece. Some of the high end models such as the Nikon D800 make photos up to 75MB. Lets use my camera for example. I typically take about 250-400 shots per shoot. Assuming each file is around 15MB, that would mean I have between 3.7 and 6 GB of data. Like most in the US, I also have low upload bandwidth. To be exact, I get about 1.5megaBITs up, or 192 kilobytes per second. At that rate, it would take over five and a half hours just to upload 250 shots to iCloud. If I had a nice D800, it would take 27 hours to upload those shots on my connection. Also note that on one vacation, in which I toured Europe, I took over 2000 photos. Do you see how ridiculous it would be to actually use iCloud? It is not a viable option.

iCloud isn't designed for this.... What it works awesome for is pictures I take on my iPhone when I don't have my DLSR. Memory cards, a laptop and an external drive that stay in the hotel until I get home is still how I manage LOTS of photos. Same as I did before iCloud existed. It isn't like Apple had some magic storage system they took away and gave you iCloud in place of it, so I don't see where your complaint comes from.
