Well i would HIGHLY recommend you not upgrade to 4 if 3.0 has been running well for you. iOS4 on the 3G doesn't work too well and i would have been highly upset about how much it sucks if it werent for me getting iPhone 4 in a few days...

I'm already on iOS4, I seem to be having better luck however than some other users, as it's noticeably better than 3.1.3 on my 3G. Unfortunately due to my training schedule I won't be getting a 4 until late August or early September. If it gave me poor performance I would completely agree with you though and switch back to a previous firmware, I just seem to be one of the lucky ones where it's given a small breath of fresh air which will last until I'm off base and can go shopping.

Another slow 3g

Glad to see that I'm not the only one with issues.
Since I installed 4.0 on my 3G life on my iPhone is terrible. It keeps freezing up in every single app, especially the official Apple apps like safari, mail and phone.
Hard reset and off/on does not help.
I tried a restore followed by restoring from backup with no luck.
Then tried restore and reinstalled all apps manually. This was a pain, and didn't help either.
If it weren't for unified inbox, I would have gone back to 3.1.3 immediately. As things are now, I intend to sacrifice unified inbox and go back to 3.1.3 anyway. This is even worse than 2.0!

Just wanted to add myself to the list of incredibly unsatisfied customers.

I feel that Apple have purposely made my older less powerful phone, very obviously feel like a less powerful old phone in the hopes that I will update to the new iPhone. Well, I'm here to say, I will not buy a new iPhone 4.

Not if I'm backed into a corner.

I've had countless issues with my phone since upgrading, the worst of these problems being that I can no longer use the phone like a phone. I've missed about 5 calls due the unlock sliding bar freezing up, I've noticed a significant increase in the amount of calls randomly dropping out, typing text messages seems sluggish and occasionally the keyboard becomes completely unresponsive. If 4.01 doesn't fix these issues I'm jailbreaking this sucker, downgrading back to OS3 and Nokia is going to make some dosh the next time I feel the need to upgrade. Because unlike the iPhone, my 8 year old Nokia works just as well now, as it did the day it came out of the box.

I read this post on apple support and I think this guys analogy is really good

"I want to add another iPhone to the growing list of what I deem as damaged due to the OS4 upgrade. Seriously, if a car were taken to a mechanic for a tuneup and returned with half its performance, I would say the mechanic damaged my car." http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2471047&start=270&tstart=0

Also, make sure you guys are leaving your comments somewhere Apple actually read them.

I just ordered the new iphone 4 from the 3g and I found the 3g terribly slow with iOS 3, which is the only reason I'm upgrading. I can't even imagine how unusable iOS 4 must be, but can't you say the same for installing Vista on a older year 2004 computer compared to a new 2010 computer? Vista will run fine on the new computer, but it's going to be almost unusable on the old computer, whereas XP will work fine on the older computer for the same tasks. You can't really blame the new OS for not running quickly on slow hardware. Would you rather have iOS 4 not support 3G phones at all?

I have felt like throwing my 3G out the window ever since upgrading to iOS 4, its painfully slow. If I wasn't getting a Samsung Vibrant on Thursday, then I'd definitely downgrade.

Its different.

- Many new programs will still run on XP.
- iPhone 3G could still be purchased as a NEW phone only 1 month ago "On June 7, 2010, the iPhone 3G was discontinued."

- Apple pretty much forced us to upgrade since many of my purchased apps will no longer work on iOS 3.
- If you choose to, there's a completely legitimate, Microsoft approved way to downgrade from Vista to XP.
- Yes I would have preferred iOS4 was unavailable for 3G and apps would work on both OS's. And this is clearly shown by the number of people who have already chanced bricking their iPhone by downgrading.

I found this to be the case with my iPhone 3G as well. It is annoyingly slower after the upgrade. There is much more lag opening programs than there used to be. Websites load noticeably slower. I mean it was already slow, but it is much worse now. I restored it tonight to see if that would help, but I don't see a difference. I have an iPhone 4 on order, so I'm not extremely concerned about it, except for resale value. In my case, though, I think one thing that has made it seem even worse is I had an EVO for a few weeks, and returned it. So now I'm back on the 3G while I'm waiting for the 4, and I am missing the faster processor.

My 3G was really slow after ios4 upgrade. I last night did a restore using a fresh download of ios4. It works much better.
Perhaps the copy did not jive with the phone the first time. I don't know.
But definitely after doing a fresh restore, my phone is 40% faster than before.
