I really don't understand the need for an auto off feature. I mean, creating an auto off schedule means you know when you want your phone to turn on and off. Why don't you just do it manually then?

That being said, I probably wouldn't use such a feature.

Well, the BB doesn't fully switch off, more like a non alert standby. You can still wake it up of you need to make a call but its not a fully switch off. One thing with the BB is that a full power off (battery out) is a very slow restart (as im guessing with most smartphones these days) so thats why don't do it unless it needs it (an install of new app). The added bonus is the extra power usage i get per charge.

I guess if the iphone 4 is great on battery and it doesn't take long to boot up from scratch then i don't need the auto off option and this case is closed!

Auto off sounds terrible. I see only one positive (longer battery life) and many many negatives. To list a few negatives: you'd miss calls, miss texts, miss emails, miss push notifications, miss calendar events... the list goes on and on. Why would you want to miss all of these just to gain longer battery life when the iPhone 4 already get's awesome battery life?

Just today I unplugged my iPhone 4 at 6 AM and it's now 12:54 AM (the next day) and I still have 46% battery left. With battery life like that, there's no need for auto off or anything like that, but that's just my opinion. :)

Personally I would find it is a good way to shut down your phone and not get woken up by it during the night while you are sleeping. on my Blackberry I used bedside mode at night. This is were the phone would turn off all notifications but the phone. That way the LED would not wake me up blinking or get a sound from a txt message while I am sleeping. Phone would still wake me up. Take it off the charger and then I can see everything that came in.

The only good thing about the auto-off feature of the BlackBerry is to escape work. Otherwise it's a worthless feature on a worthless device.

Really you think the blackberry is worthless. I have said it and I will say it again the blackberry is the best smart phone for pure communications but not so good for the web or apps (or media) but if all you use it for is email, txting and phone calls the blackberry is king in that department.

More on the OP. I left the blackberry and went over to Android because well media and web were more important to me and I was willing to give up the keyboard and communications side. One feature I really miss was bed side mode. I would throw my phone in the charging pod, it would become my night stand clock and then kill all the notifications while I slept. It was set to engage when it was put being charged between 10am and 7am. Bed side mode stays engaged until it is taking off the charger (even if it is noon when I take it off)

If you don't want them then turn your phone off; don't remove choice.

Hang on, from what i have read here there isn't the option of Auto off, so at the moment there is no choice!

Im only asking if it is there, and it isn't. But if it was the auto off setting (at your set times) is and option you turn on or off so you don't have to have it on!

Im with you on that. The BB is great for emails, it does fail a bit on the apps and web, which is what im missing at the moment, and the reason for the move back. I also was thinking android, but as I've got mobile me and macs i think im a bit to tied to apple now (steve's got me!)

As you know now, the iPhone does not have an "auto-off" option. On the bright side, the iPhone 4 has excellent battery life for a smart-phone. "For a smart-phone" being the operative phrase, from the screen to the processor etc, these let you do more things but they use more power than your average BB.

In addition to that, since you can do so much more, people often are not aware of how much more they end up using their iPhone (or other comparable smart-phone). Again, it does have excellent battery life for a smart-phone (usually 1-2 days between charging, depending on use).

My suggestion is this: when you are thinking about getting an iPhone 4 (or comparable phone), build in the cost of getting a car charger, extra charger for use at work and one external batter charger. Yes this is an additional sum of money but it almost completely obviates the down side (and worry) of having a phone like the iPhone 4, while allowing you to take advantages of the benefits of such a device.

wow cant believe the way you guys are jumping all over the OP.

this is a simple feature BB's have and yes i used all the time when i had a curve back in the day..

as it stands right now i put my iphone in airplane mode when i go to bed..

you need to get a hold of me wait till about 8am :)

Exactly! If you don't want to use this feature no one is forcing everyone to use it. Some of us iOS users would like an auto off feature for specific times because we don't want to be bothered for any reasons while we sleep, playing with our kids, etc. It would be great if our phones new to automaticly shut itself off between certain times for privacy, power saving, etc.

Like the above user. If you need to get a hold of me wait until 8am (or whatever time you need to have your phone on).

This feature isn't meant for everybody but there are some of us whom would love this feature.

I think this auto off or auto shutting off notifications at night would be GREAT.

I get emails all night long. Some are subscribed, some are people working in different time zones... not necessarily urgent... but now with iOS 5 and the notifications on the lock screen (which I love)... the screen comes on every time an email comes in. So my phone which sits in a dock by my bed lights up all night long.

So I have to pick... either shut that option off manually every night, or not use the lock screen notifications which defeats the purpose.

I can't believe that I would be the only one in this situation...

You are not. I have a Blackberry for work and an iPhone for myself. My Blackberry I have set to shut off at a certain time and turn back on at a certain time on weekday, different times weekends. Works great. The iPhone, well I have to shut that off manually, kinda blows.

Wow this is something that never even crossed my mind with iOS 5 and it will be a problem for a lot of people myself included. I already mute my phone and as it is (and sometimes forget to unmute it in the a.m.) Now I have to also remember to turn off notifications so it isn't flashing like a lighthouse all night long?

Personally, I think this is a huge oversight for iOS 5. Being able to set times (and which) notifications to be turned off would be the only workaround short of turning everything on and off manually. And I don't like the manual "option" because I don't always remember to do or undo.

I think muting notifications is kind of one of those things that most OS designers over look. The only one who I think got it right was Blackberry in how you can easily kill them and when they released OS 5 they really improved it. It is based on when you plug your phone in for the night for the auto part. Put your phone on external power between user defined hours it will auto mute everything but phone calls.

For Android I found an App that sort of provide the same function as bedside mode but no were near as nice because I have to turn it on but it does mute everything but phone calls.
Reason I like the phone to still ring is in case a friend or family member calls me in the middle of the night needing something or more often someone calling me in the morning for something that I need to take care of. Txt message will not wake me up but a phone call will. 2-3Am phone call from a friend is need is always something I will gladly take.

This is it exactly...get out of my head! Seriously though...I had Bedside on Android and of course we know how well Blackberry handled this.

You know, I'd even be willing to settle for on/off widgets (that I could of course place on any screen anywhere I wanted).
Cellular
Ringtone
Notifications
SMS/MMS
Wifi
Bluetooth
GPS

But I don't think we are even going to get those.

A nice approach they could take is to have different profiles for alerts. Each set of Ringtone and notification settings could be saved to a separate plist file named by the user. That way it would be completely customizable and easy to select your settings for a "Bedside Mode" from a drop down list right on the Preferences page.:D

Agreed.

After getting an iPad, I find myself not using my iPhone for much more than phone and text/email. Depending on what the 4S/5 has, I may just go back to a blackberry and my iPad.
