A lot of people are hoping for a big overhaul with iOS 5. Would you like to see iOS break away from its existing interface of endless pages of grids of icons and adopt a different approach, such as Android's desktop + app drawer alternative, or would it be safer for Apple to stay with the grid UI to retain its simplicity and ease of use? Is there much more Apple can do to radically overhaul iOS without the grid layout being the centre of the experience?

Personally, I'm a big fan of Android and its customisability. I love having widgets everywhere and contact shortcuts and only the icons I want. BUT whenever I pick up an iPhone things feel so much more cleaner and simpler. Or is that just my inner iFanboy trying to justify the fact that it feels a tad basic in comparison?

I like the iPhone the way it is. The home screen is iconic It wouldn't be an iPhone without the grid. If I wanted the Android characteristics I'd get an Android phone!

Since you are a big fan of Android by all means GO BUY one and STOP BITCHING about iPhone!

It's more likely that Apple will adopt a more functional lock screen and keep the grid. Coupled with a proper notifications bar/menu, I think the grid would still work perfectly well.

Nah. I'm feeling the grid. Like some have said, there's other (more important) areas that could be worked on first.

I think i'd like the grid if i had an option not to use it.

Also, this thread talks about the grid-like layout, thus we're discussing it.
I also think there are more important areas for iOS to upgrade first, such as the notification system.

I'm not bitching. I don't want an Android because I already bought an iPhone just two weeks ago... a white one to replace my black one, which replaced my 3GS! Which I use alongside my iPad and iMac. As a long-term iOS user I was merely suggesting an alternative for a future UI. Just because I'm a fan of Apple doesn't mean I can't be a fan of another company's products as well. geez

Grid is fine.

I'm glad the iPhone uses squares for all the icons, it makes it look neater/cleaner than different shaped icons (as on Androids).

I like the idea of the android grid, I mean you can make folders but it'd be awesome if you just clicked one thing and a whole big folder opened up and all the apps were there, itd clean up the home screen a bit, I also think apple just needs more ways to customize your phone, without jailbreaking, I mean why not just have an option in settings to change colors of your interface? Charge a dollar for it in the app store or something, just make it an option. And SMS bubbles, I personally love having my blue and purple bubbles instead of the ugly default colors.

Yes, please lose the grid-like display, or make a Launchpad-like app to launch the grid-like display. I'd like to see my wallpaper on my phone, and have less clutter.

If you move most of your apps off of the main page to a second page, then you get the launchpad effect. You get to see your wallpaper on the main page, then swipe over to the 2nd page to see your apps. That's pretty much how launchpad would work on the phone anyway.
