I wonder if I'll be able to send texts to people that don't have an iOS device on my iPad? It's annoying having to reach for the iPhone to reply to text messages

Doesn't look that way from what information is available. The moment I saw the bit about iMessage I was thinking "please let this thing take incoming SMS messages on my iPhone, sync them to all of my iDevices via iMessage, then send an SMS throgh my iPhone even if I write the actual reply on my iPad through iMessage".

That would have been a great feature.

On another topic, Photo Stream seems like a nice way of giving someone a near-live glimpse into whatever it is you're doing elsewhere. Take photos on your holiday and assuming you have 3G connectivity, your folks at home will see your photos nearly instantly through an iPad for instance (assuming both devices use the same Apple ID). Neat.

I really hope it's built into Messages so SMS and iMessages can be organized in one app.

Much like Windows Phone 7 does with uniting all messages from Facebook, Twitter, SMS, etc... into one UI.

I think it will be separate. It is iPhone to iPhone so why would it be integrated into SMS. It is BBM for iPhone.

im pretty sure its the messages app with the added features. then ipad and ipod touch get it and u use ur icloud or apple account to use it on those. kind of like facetime.

EDIT: it is built in (per apples website). you can send over wifi it sounds like. this could be better than whatsapp bc it only runs on phones (not ipod touch or ipad) while imessage runs on all of iOS. but imessage cannot send instant messages to other non ios devices so u will still need both apps. if whatsapp develops for ipod touch and ipad then it will win because cross platform as well as all of iOS.

now, imessage would be cool if you can send a text through wifi if there is no 3G if you use an iphone. we will find out!!! this could be the start to "send message when i get service" and stop a message after u hit send

Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; U; CPU iPhone OS 4_3_3 like Mac OS X; en-us) AppleWebKit/533.17.9 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/5.0.2 Mobile/8J2 Safari/6533.18.5)

Would be great if it would just auto forward regular texts to your iPad too. Then I wouldn't have to carry my phone all over the house if I have the iPad with me. Maybe iMessages will link up with your mobile number somehow. Lots of questions still to be answered.

Looks like I was wrong. Still not sure if I will really use it. I guess I will see if other iPhone, iPad and iTouch friends start to use it or not.

I wonder how you can send a normal SMS to someone and not a iMessage and vice versa if that person has an iPhone as well? and vary the methods of sending a message to that same person as iMessage is built into the message app?

As someone who has never used a blackberry, imessage works the same as SMS/MMS but without "paying" for texts? Therefore you are using the data you pay for, rather than the texts you pay for?

Could this cause a problem for the lowest teir data plans (@ ATT)? I still have unlimited, so no worries, but my wife currently has only the 200 MB. Anyone think that could be a problem?

what's the difference? If they get the message its all the same right?

Surely "WhatsApp" is a better chat app, it is cross-platform and seems to do everything that iMessage does. Although it will not work on iPad or iPod.

it was mentioned that it will require 3g or wifi, and use push(?), so i'm guessing it will use data instead of sms, which is nice for those who either don't have an sms plan, or are looking to cut down on a limited sms plan (like myself).

in all honesty, i don't see a reason for them to make sms + imessage in one. instead it should be imessage + facetime together, to make some kind of a mobile ichat version.

I don't know about US or anywhere else but an example would be if my SMS limit run out and I want to send the message using data to their iPhone, how would I know it wouldn't keep sending messages through SMS? Because if it kept sending messages through SMS then someone who ran over their SMS limit would be cost a lot and instead could be saved by using data. That would be a difference.

iMessage is amazing. I am running ios5 on my iphone 4.
It is embedded in Messages app. But it detects when the other person is running ios5 and it automatically startes using the iMessage protocol. Colours change from green to blue. and you can see them typing and if messages are delivered or not.
It happens on the fly all seamless and nothing to even think about.
Amazing.

That is pretty amazing. I've been waiting for someone who's used it to post. But question... How would it work for someone with the iPad or iPod Touch. Do you have a pin? Do you need an email address? How does that work?

I have not installed it on my iPAd.. So cant test that yet).
BUT I did install ios 5 on a 3GS that has no services.
iMessage still works on the 3GS, it just uses your apple ID instead. So I assume it will use apple id for ipad and ipod as well. Similar to Face Time.

I wonder if they will release an OSX iMessage app.

I do not mess with iOS contact very much since it is only on my iPod but does it link everything together fairly well like Google or blackberry contacts. It just one more items that is added to the list of a contact.

For example on my old blackberry under one contacts name I could have all their phone numbers, email address, pin number (BBM) and I think some other info.
on android Phone numbers, emails, social networking (facebook, twitter ect), screen names for different IM clients and so on so when I want to contact that person I can hope choose between them all with no issue at all.

I wonder if RIM will go after Apple for creating something that operates 'like BBM' ? With the whole notifications on delivered, read, replying, etc...

RIM went after Kik, wonder if they are up to the challenge with Apple now.
