I don't see why not. At some point, Apple will need to reinvent iOS in a grand way. iOS7 or 8 is a perfect opportunity to refresh the interface. It does not have to be drastic, but it needs to be noticeably different.

For Apple its all about user experience and actual functionality.

They are not about to shake things up and create a slew of issues just for the sake of giving some users an excitement fix.

Something as small as reshaping the app icons is all I ask. Not much at all.

BTW, after playing around with iOS 6 beta 2 and Jelly Bean, I'd have to say Jelly Bean has a significant edge with how crisp, smooth, and accessible the OS is. Really amazed at how JB has performed.

It's smoother and faster than previous iterations of Android but I don't see how it's smoother than iOS per se.

True but blowing Android smoke up people's ass isn't much of a contribution as well.

Basically this thread is interesting and has good debate if we keep any overt bias at the door, that is true for Apple and Android.

"I think this feature would be useful", "it would be great if iOS had this android feature" those kind of comments or similar are great as they are constructive debate.

"iOS sucks it's just poor compared to Jelly bean" or "All Android machines are rubbish I would never use them if I was dying" are not constructive.

We welcome debate we just don't welcome abuse or blind hatred of either OS (iOS or Android).

The comments, by and large, come from people that do not know enough about the platforms to articulate. Some of the comments come from people who can articulate and just find themselves being perhaps too lazy to do so.

iOS and Android really have philosophical differences. Look at their respective developer conferences.

Google makes it what a 3 day event with live blogging across most of it.

Apple does a 90 minute to 2-hour Keynote and then the rest is sealed up behind NDA.

You really have to put more work into figuring out what the next iOS or OS X release is going to have because those who know won't tell.

Apple will always move towards making things more simple. Complexity is an anathema to their "computer for the rest of us" founding principle.

Tech forum like MR contain people who are a bit more comfortable with technology. However the average consumer is probably a bit more mystified and that's where the meat of the market is.

"Turn by Turn" not being on the iPhone 4 is clearly nothing to do with Siri.

The screenshots clearly show that you can start and interact with the feature using the touch UI.

Having to use Siri would just be ridiculous.

They always introduce features in iOS that aren't available on previous generation devices.

VoiceOver uses the same voice as Siri...so the voice is already there.

What are people complaining about?

IOS now DESTROYS andriod on these key key key features

Camera - With the 4s's ****ING AMAZING camera its no match and more importantly Icloud is such an amazing feature wow

Maps- now with maps apple has upped the ante and is barely behind google instead of ridiculously behind

Facebook - Not only with integration BUT once FB redoes there app I cant imagine how fast it'll be

now that chrome is on the app store I still dont belive its better than the andriod version but still

So iOS destroys android by being behind them, wow I must have completely misunderstood the definition of destroys. I always thought you wanted to be ahead of the competition, not behind. I'm going to have to reevaluate my entire life now.

Have the opinion that these years updates are just improvements from previous
systems. (and ML compared to Lion, and iOS 6 from 5.
iOS 6 have some nice and welcoming features but honestly I expected more in turns of some innovations.

Yes both Jelly Bean and iOS 6 are about polishing an already strong set of features. I think the developers should get a bit of a break on the innovation front in order to tidy up the house a bit.

That being said what Apple has done to use the inertial sensors in the iPhone to do video stabilization is nothing short of amazing to this man. Those that don't care about video though will not perceive this to be innovative however so in the end it all comes down to individual preference.

Wow, back to Earth mate!

The phone's camera has nothing to do with the OS and is very good on the iPhone, better than on my Galaxy Nexus (I have both). The phone's camer app however is better on Android since it takes pictures immediately, there's no delay, and you have more options.

Messaging - Why the hell are you comparing iMessage with SMS? Android also has messaging apps that work across devices, iMessage only works with iPhones.

Maps - Google is way ahead of the game, mate.

Facebook - There is Facebook integration in Android too.

Seriously, that was pretty lackluster.

I know there's another poll already but it's terribly constructed. This one is simple.

Lets summarize the 10 big features of iOS6 shall we?

From this page: http://www.apple.com/ios/ios6/

1) Maps: Ok, that's big enough. Whole new interface. Whole new backend. Yep.
2) Siri tells you sports and movie stuff: Yeah sorry, that's a cloud feature.
3) Facebook: Social Networking garbage that should have been paired with Twitter last year. Doesn't even deserve a spot of its own.
4) Shared photo streams: An x.1 addition at best. All they did was make photo stream social. An enhancement, not a feature of its own.
5) Passbook: An app that I could have downloaded from the app store like "Find my Friends". Most people won't use this. They trust the native app more than a consolidated solution.
6) Facetime over Cellular: Something that should have always been there when Facetime came out. No reason to delay except to ration out the features.
7) Phone replies: Should have been there since iOS1. A complete joke. Typical Apple nonsense rationing of features.
8) Mail enhancements: Stuff that should have been there in iOS3. OMG APPLE THANKS FOR LETTING ME ATTACH STUFF IN THE MAIL APP. Complete crap, typical Apple rationing of features.
9) Safari enhancements: Typical stuff that should have been in iOS5 with iCloud. More feature rationing.
10) Accessibility: Apple JUST realized that kids and sick kids can use devices you manipulate with your fingers and parents might want some fine grained control? This should have been around since iOS3 as a minor feature that every parent can use. Typical Apple trying to showcase a feature because they want to portray how they REALLY care about children.

Anyway, yeah, iOS6 is a joke. I'm done with this nonsense for good.
You get voted down because people can't take the truth.

:apple: out

lol that'll be the day, he doesn't mean it, he's been on here in various threads bitching and moaning. Think he just likes the attention or he really has nothing better to do.

A-f.ing-MEN!

this is the absolute truth and it pisses me off because we get this same crap every iOS update.

if you hate it so much with each update, why not move away to something else like android or WinMob 7? If I was as pissed off as you claim to be, I'd make a change. Or do you just like to bitch and moan? As that's all you seem to do....

Apple never called the features "Big"

http://www.apple.com/ios/ios6/

"Big" is a word that doesn't show up once on the page. Rightly so...it's up to each person to decide how worthy a feature is.

Apple simply chooses to highlight features they think will appeal to the end user and it is no way indicative of total feature-set.

general observation

one example of many...

why doesn't apple have 4g by now? that should of been a must have.

as a mac fan, i feel that apple used to set the bar, and now they are having trouble just staying competitive...

no agreement?

The iPhone and iPad both have 4G, but the iPhone doesn't have LTE 4G but a slower type of 4G.

They're leaving it out on purpose to keep the fire going. It's not like they're struggling to add it. It's their strategy.

You don't know that yet.

First let's make slight clarification. AT&T is justified in calling their HSPA+ network 4G because it is significantly faster than prior 3G cellular at a higher 14.4Mbps rate. LTE is even faster but Apple did not want the 4S to have less battery life than the 4.

Adding LTE would have had deleterious effects on battery life. Primary reason is that there were no LTE chipsets that handled also handled 3G and voice in one chip. This meant that you had a 3G chip and LTE chip searching for cell towers and thusly killing battery life.

Today Qualcomm has a chip that does LTE/3G/Voice in a compact package that shouldn't drain battery life.

When it comes to being first or doing the prudent thing and delivering a baseline amount of features that iPhone users are accustomed to Apple will generally skew towards the latter.

How do people say stuff like this with a straight face? :D

Maybe because it's true depending who you talk to?

Look, let's be honest....it's not a coincidence why Apple is starting lawsuits right and left with Google. They can see Android gaining steam and in a lot of cases passing them by and they are trying to slow down the process. The Droid Razr Maxx isn't the best selling on Verizon for no reason. People are buying into Android, larger screens and LTE and in that phone's case, crazy battery life.

As an Apple fan, they need to come up with something more than Siri or adding maps and navigation which Android phones have had for years already. They need to start pushing the envelope IMO or they are going to be left in the dust unfortunately.
