Just a thought, after seeing the hate and gasping threads all over phone forums, about what is a small issue. I can't help but think that this is a planned exploit attack by a viral PR firm. Question would be who is behind it . Do no Evil??

Gizmodo, for obvious reasons.

It's not a good measure that's for sure, but chances are if you only have 2 bars or so that you are in a relatively weak signal area and a good spot to test reception loss from touching the dreaded left seam.

i still only lose 1 bar in this type of area. from 5 to 4 from 3 to 2. thats the best or worse i can do

well on a more interestin note I had the signal issue bought my phone on launch day, I got a replacement sim last week and now I have gone from getting no service to going as low as 1 bar. I dunno what the difference the sim makes but I can now use my phone without loosing full service

Sometimes just removing and re-inserting the sim card can fix it because of the contacts and has been reported elsewhere. Replacement sim cards with better contacts have also been known to solve most of the signal drop problems. It's better for Apple to handle the issues on a case-by-case basis than issue a needless mass recall. You are under warranty. They will take care of you.

I consider my iP4 as being non-problematic.

But here's the thing. Yes, if I sit around at home and play with it trying to replicate death grips etc, etc then I'm sure I could identify a problem.

However, if I just simply use the damn thing like I did my 3G then it's a better phone. I've had crazy-fast 3G data speeds with the new phone and I've yet to have a single dropped call. My 3G dropped calls every single day.

I don't concern myself with how I hold my phone either. I simply just use it. I understand that some people are having issues. I get that. But I also think that some people are sitting around trying to find problems to bitch about also.

Thank you. This is how sensible people go about.

The rest of the crazies go around humming the Darth Vader theme and doing the "death grip" all the time to see how annoyed they will get.

I think you mean Vulcan Death Grip, not Vader. :D

So glad I waited for the second batch. Not a single problem with mine.

They havent changed them yet. Its way to early for them to recognize a HARDWARE problem and fix it. You are just in a good signal area where even if you do the death grip your signal is strough enough where it doesnt affect you.

Well with the 3GS i always dropped calls everywhere in my house to the point where i had to go out on my deck. Now with iphone 4 I havent had any dropped calls or had to go outside.

I also just jinx'd myself into my first dropped call.

It's crazy and it doesn't fit any of the death grip patterns. I was in a 50-100 yard radius of an ATT cell tower and my signal went to 0. I was clearly not connected to the nearest tower. Anyways dropped call..

I saw 0 bars, sat the phone down for a good 30 seconds and tried to redial from sitting on the seat. Got fast busy, so nada..

Let it sit for a while, goes from 0 to 5 bars. Tried to make a call. Got fast busy again.

It took several minutes to make another call. I never got more than 100 yards from the tower, as it's right by my kids daycare.

ATT/Apple are clearly doing some strange things in software here. I know they're pushing the envelope trying to bail ATT out but c'mon.

1.4 Mbps with one bar. Forget bars.

This is a screen grab of data performance while I am in a poor signal area forcing the bars down by covering lower left. Forget about what bars say, just use the damn phone.
