Same problem. Original iPad 64GB, iOS 5.01 has turned it into a sluggish piece of hardware. So much so I'd rather go back to using my netbook. Tapping on apps sometimes takes 3-5 seconds to open, the keyboard frequently doesn't immediately respond, and typing is frequently interrupted by pauses. I find that I have to shut down/restart the iPad to get performance to return to something "normal" often.

Turning off notifications helped, but it's still much slower than iOS 4.x.

you summed up my experience perfectly here. its very sad that apple can cripple a device like this and not let us downgrade.
for anyone trying to restore performance, delete your iCloud account from the iPad, turn off gestures, turn off notification centre. i really miss how my iPad used to be :(

I'm dealing with the same crap with my original iPad. Safari crashes 10-20 times a day. It at least restarts to the same page or one page prior when I relaunch it.

Not sure what to do. Only has been a problem since going to iOS 5.

Same here for me. iPad 1 (32GB Wifi) has been miserable since iOS5. Safari crashing frequently, apps take forever to load, typing is unresponsive.

Restoring didn't help.

Fingers crossed for 5.1.

I have constant problems with Safari crashing on my iPad. I have had this problem with every iOS version on my iPad. I am surprised by people who never have this problem, maybe I just use Safari more. Or I visit different sites.
The only noticeable slowdown I have noticed is when typing text. I have noticed this in various apps, including Safari and some games.

Add me to the "no issues" train, I think it's important to mention that for balance. I bought an iPad 1 used the other week just to tide me over till the 3 and it has the latest iOS on and runs just fine, only crashes have been the odd game and one of them was Rogue Touch which has always been a buggy mess.

Will update if it's starts to act up.

My ipad 1 16gb wifi has been on 4.3.3 JB'ed and it runs along just fine. No ios upgrade for me.

I've had some of these same issues on my ipad2. Going to Settings> About>Diagnostics and Usage shows many low memory issues.

I tried everything posted: clearing cookies and data, clearing cashe, rebooting, closing all apps in the multi take bar, complete rests, etc. the issues just got worse.

Now I didn't have them upon initial upgrade but they seems to get a little bit worse and worse.

I finally happened upon a thread on this forum about maximizing memory on ipad1s and one of the suggestions was to turn off as much of the Spotlight Search helpers as you can. Since I very rarely use Spotlight I turned off all of mine. Settings>Spotlight Search

Knock on wood - it's been a couple of weeks now and my issues have gone away. No Safari crashesn no low memory warnings on games, no app crashes at all.

Don't know if this will work for any of you on your ipad1 but you might try it.

OK,I turned everything off in spotlight settings. hope it solves the issue.

Same Here

I am experiencing the same issue since upgrading to iOS 5.

Safari crashes regularly and the UI seems overly sensitive now.

If I cannot downgrade I plan on buying an Android tablet.

I decided to completely wipe mine and start from scratch. Reloaded all my applications (sans all the data I once had associated with them, of course)...no good. Still as slow. iOS 5 sucks on the iPad1. Really hoping they're addressing this.

DFU restore

Similar issues, mainly with repetitive Safari crashes.

Went to the Apple Store, they ran diagnostics, and said Safari had no record of crashing.

They asked if I had made fresh install of 5.01. I had for 5.0, but for every .01 is a bit tedious.

Next trip to the store showed up a couple of Safari crashes, but plenty of low memory events.

Was advised to have a full restore at the Apple Store.

Finally made a full backup, took the machine back to the store and they did a full DFU restore - supposedly better than a home restore.

A few hints about the (iCloud) restore: it was more thorough and accurate than I expected. However, two apps failed to reappear and the (significant amount of) data for one has completely disappeared.

It's only day 2 but no issues with Safari, so far...
