It makes sense. Look at all the portable game console revisions. They always cost more like the pspgo is still like $50 more than the standard psp or look at those ds lite revisions. Or look at sony vaio umpcs when they came out they cost like over two grand as conpared to much more powerful at the time standard sony laptops/netbookz and other similar products.

Apple are interested in solving Apple's problems, not in solving Stirolak123's problems (or mine, for that matter).

So which one of Apple's problems would your idea solve? And that's things that Apple themselves see as a problem, not what you or I think is a problem.

Depends on what new features the iPad 2 brings to the table. Also if Apple keeps a first gen model on sale for a lower price.

I would say you could get one for possibly $200 off if you are a good negotiator on craigslist.

I would imagine the price would go down considerably regardless if Apple continues to sell them or not. I really want to get an iPad but I've been holding out for the next revision. If the first gen see a nice price drop, I might just get one of those instead. I think a deal breaker would be an sd card slot and more storage though. Then I would have to go for the newer model. For what I want to do with the iPad (watch porn , inappropriate things , scare old people  - just kidding :D), the first gen actually meets all my needs but its still nice to get the latest model.

Currently, apple is selling refurbed 3g models for 6-7% off, and wifis for a 14-16% discount.

Their page is currently selling their refurbed macbooks and macbook pros for mostly 15% off, with one model, a formerly higher end MBP for a 25% discount.

I'd guess they'd price leftover v1's at roughly 15-25% off, and use the rest for applecare replacements. If they sell all the v1's they'd have to make warranty replacements with the new model.

They should price it higher so you can have a higher resale value on your current iPad? If you're going to just make things up you might as well say 'they should come with $100 bills'; it makes about as much sense.

If the iPad 2 is launched at a higher price, then the increased resale value of the first iPad just splits the difference - you'd be no further ahead anyway!

I don't see why they would want to launch it at a higher price. The competition in the tablet space will be ramping up and Apple is well aware of that. No need to price yourself out. The $500 is a good starting point for the device.

Even on eBay or similar venues, the iPad 1 probably won't sell for any more than $100 off the sticker price (provided they have been taken care of and include all the necessary startup gear such as the cords and a case). Apple products generally retain their value strongly for a year or two. Because of this, i told myself "screw waiting another 2-3 months, i'll just buy the iPad and sell it when the next one comes out". Besides, the vast majority of bidders on eBay are idiots and will bid a lot of stuff up to damn well near its original value even if its been pretty well used.

True, but what about the seller fees? That is the only part about Ebay that I really don't like. The seller fees seem to be getting higher and higher. I am not sure what it is now, doesn't Ebay get like 10% off what you sell?

Easy enough to figure out: http://pages.ebay.com/help/sell/fees.html

Also factor in Paypal fees. Rough rule of thumb would be to anticipate receiving around 88% of the final sale price.

You can also go with Craigslist, but that may give a more limited market unless you're in a major metro area, as well as the time spent dealing with potential buyers who don't complete a sale.

IMHO the ebay fees are not something to like or dislike; they are what they are and a seller should educate himself before putting something up for sale on ebay. There are other alternatives like Amazon marketplace and Craigslist; it's a balance between the potential market and how much effort the seller needs to exert in dealing with potential buyers.
