Yeah the Genius is going to look at it and laugh hysterically as he points for him to go in line and buy a new one.
The worst the Genius will do is recommend an out-of-warranty repair (which is essentially a swap for a replacement device, as they do not repair iPads in-store).

The best is the Genius will do one of those rare "surprise and delight" moves and cover the repair under warranty (also resulting in swapping for a replacement device, but at no cost).

This is the reason that the 'SmartCover' is actually useless.

It would only be useless if you believed the smart cover is supposed to cover the back.

However, you'd have to be one complete horses' arse to believe that it was ever SUPPOSED to cove the back. it's like saying windshield wipers are useless because they can't fill your gas tank for you.

I got a new iPad on Friday, and it had a small dent in it on Tuesday right over the volume rocker(not really sure how, it was in a padded laptop bag the whole day, I can only guess it happened when I went out, and put it in the trunk). I would have lived with it, except it permanently pressed the volume rocker in which locked the volume on mute, and the volume display on the screen. Made an appointment with applecare and went to the store and the applecare guy took pity on me and they did a warranty replacement no charge. I had to wait a week, but I picked it up yesterday.

The bad news, replacement of the back really means replacing the whole device, and it would have been 419 bucks.
The good news, applecare rocks.

Good luck.

I bought my iPad 2 on Friday of last week at the SxSw pop up shop. Already by yesterday there were two scratches on the back of it. Have no idea how they got there. Was in a sleeve designed for laptops with smart cover on. Looks to me like maybe smart cover came off and the metal scratched hinges the back of it. The smart cover is cool, but not if it ruins my iPad. There are NO scratches on my iPad 1

Wow. From the looks of that I find it hard to believe that nothing is damaged inside. We NEED to hear the story on this.

I am very curious to hear how this happened, that is crazy looking.

Alright alright. I'll swallow my pride and tell the story. Even though its embarrassing, It's a decent one anyways.

I was heading to my car I had my hands full of hot food and an iPad. I got to my car and put the iPad (with the Smart Cover) on top of my car so I could open the door. I put all the food down and then my friend distracted me and want me to wait for him to get into the passenger seat so I could pass one of the food dishes to him.

Next thing you know I totally forgot my iPad was still on top of my car. I started driving and it wasnt until 20min later once I got out of the car I realized what I had just done.

I freaked out and back tracked for hours on the roads that I drove on looking for it. In the end I gave up thinking it must have fallen off right when I started driving the car in the neighborhood and some kid picked it up and was happily enjoying my iPad 2.

Two days later I get an email from a very nice gentleman who had found my iPad 2 on the side of the road (while running) way out, probably 10km from where I started. This road was on the outskirts of town. Im guessing the magnets on the Smart Cover kept my iPad 2 on my car for quite a while. Until it couldnt hold on any longer when I made a turn where the man had found my iPad.

Thats the story. I met up with the person got it back gave him a gift card from bestbuy as a thanks for being a a good samaritan. The front of the screen is still perfect not a single scratch.

What I have notice is that the wif antenna must have been damaged by the shock of the fall and now requires a very strong wifi signal to maintain connectivity. As one poster noted, yes the dock port is slightly bent. I was able to press it almost back into place. This did damage the home button as it requires me to press a bit harder then usual to get a response. "Its ok I have multi gesture enabled." /sarcasm

What makes it worse is I live in Canada.... It's not even out yet. I should not be allowed to have kids.

That is so unlucky!

Head to apple and get a genius to look at it. Even if they dint swap it for free it will be cheaper than a whole new iPad 2.

The back getting scratched by random objects and even the smart cover hinges is why I have cut up an old invisible shield iPad 1 back and put it on my iPad 2. I have ordered an iPad 2 shield but it hasn't arrived so rather than risk it I did a custom job and although it looks a bit silly my iPad is scratch proof on the rear now.

I am happy that I did that as these things clearly scratch easier than 1st gens for whatever reason!

Go apple and ask them.
Put a sticker on it and take it to apple.

Write down this, "My kids said no."

Oh dear! I am sorry that happened! I once baked an apple pie, and put it on the roof of my car, and drove away, the pan was glass and as I pulled out it flew off the roof and shattered all over, Pyrex glass mixed in with apple pie mess all over the driveway. It happens, but I am glad you got your iPad back! Sorry about the scratches though !

I would freak out too if I lost my iPad, the pie was just messy, but the iPad is pricy to replace!

Wow u werent kidding when u said badly scratched, i cringed when i saw the photo, as far as getting it fixed/replaced, the fact that its not out in Canada kinda sux, I'd take a trip to the Apple store on Friday when international launch happens, see if they'd be willing to swap/send it in for repair, although with a device as new as the iPad 2 they might not have repair parts for it yet. You might be able to find an apple employee that would be willing to swap it, but I think you would have to be very lucky for that. Worst case scenario buy a Incipio feather case to cover the back up, and try to unwarp the dock connector frame as much as possible =) Good luck buddy. As a side note I will never leave things on top of my car ever again lol.

What did you do? Use it as a hockey puck? (edit: didn't see that it fell off the car) Well... You can always try buffing it out with some heavy duty car polish. It can't look any worse.

Car polish ... on a matte surface ... /facepalm

Sorry, OP. I was counting on a single deep scratch, until I saw the picture and read your description of a little more damage that actually affected use. I don't think that an Apple store will be able to help out, because it's just unfortunately not covered under any type of warranty.

Sounds like the best bet (as crappy as it is) is just to pony up for an out of warranty repair or replacement, and then remember to take it off the roof before you drive away. :)

Good luck to you!

I'm not for cheating the system, BUT if you can try to land yourself a square trade ipad warranty, which is currenty just 72 bucks if you use code IPAD40, they'll cover accidental damage and replace it for the 72 bucks you paid.
