Returned mine today for the loose trim. They gave me a new one and the new one, while not as bad looks slightly loose. I should have checked the demos in the store to see if they were like it to.

I have seen the exact same thing on mine, however it was only noticable in the dark with direct light shining on the seam. It's a shame how some people are moaning about horrible manufacturing quality on such a miniscule thing.

Yours might be miniscule but my splits were so wide I could see internal components.

Apologies for moaning that my £400+ device was falling apart straight out of the box. Oh, and my replacement, too.

Also had this straight out of the box, and the pry marks in the same spot, those pictures may have well been mine. I wasnt going to bother about it but my GF bought a 64white and it was pristine so I got mine replaced.

Noticed this on mine--same spot as the pics. Noticed that the white 3Gs displayed at my local Apple store were like that too.

I have the same thing on my black 64GB 3G in the exact same spot (under the headphone jack). It's either the design or something in the production process that's causing this since everyone seems to be having the issue in the exact same location. Honestly, I would've never noticed it if not for this thread (and trust me, I've inspected my iPad 2 with a fine-toothed comb), although it is much easier to see on the white iPads. I think the new super-thin bezel and the glued (rather than clipped) screen are the likely culprits here.

I certainly don't plan on exchanging mine for this reason alone, particularly since I'd probably just get one that's worse in some other way, and there's nothing loose or clicking on mine. My iPad does have a bit of minor backlight bleed, but since I got it at Target, I figure I have 90 days until I need to return it. So, I'm going to wait it out a little longer until iPad 2's are easier to find and then I'll swap mine out. Hopefully these manufacturing bugaboos will be taken care of in the next couple of months.

Despite the couple of very minor issues my iPad has, I'm really happy with it. Admittedly, it does help knowing that I have the option to return it in 90 days, but I'd be satisfied even if that weren't the case.

Both my 3G iPad and my girlfriends wifi iPad have this in the exact same spot as the OP, as wel as above the FaceTime camera.

ALL the demo units at the local Apple store also have it. Probably a manufacturing thing. :/

White 3G 32GB. Exact same problem, exact same location, also looks like a piece of metallic debris is stuck in there.

Interesting.

Interesting. I have a white 64gb 3G and I see the same thing on the front left side where the jack is. I don't think it's as pronounced as in the pictures, but I can see what you're talking about.

Since my unit has no bleeding and no bad pixels, I'll keep it. If it seems to get worse, I'll take it to Apple, but seeing as how I'd never even noticed it until now, I'll keep this one.

If you have this then please submit some feedback to Apple reporting this (whether you're returning your unit or not).

Neither of my returns saw the issue recognised and recorded by the Genius so there is a danger that this is not getting back to 'the powers that be'.

I have 2 64GB White AT&T 3G iPad 2 units sitting here and they are both exhibiting this issue. One if from Walmart the other from Best Buy. The both have the separation near the headphone jack. The Walmart one has a more blue/cool screen while the Best Buy is a warmer/yellow screen. They both have bleed, although the Walmart more blue unit seems to have more, with a big splotch in the upper right corner. Trying to debate what to do. Will probably return the Walmart unit and wait it out a couple more weeks with the Best Buy unit since I have a 45 day return policy there. Just some more feedback for you guys.

Mine too

I took it to the apple store earlier this week for the problem and they ordered a replacement. Went to pick it up today and the new one was even worse. So we are going to try again on Saturday to see if the new one they are ordering is ok. My first two (dead pixels and crooked screen) did not have this problem so I don't think this is normal.

Popped into my local PC World and Currys here in London (next door to each other) yesterday and checked the nine iPad's on display in both stores.

Every single one had separation between the glass and the aluminium to varying degrees which means I've had two of my own and inspected over 40 demo units and every one has been falling apart at the edges.

The issue is much more difficult to spot on the black but it is there and in exactly the same place as on the white models.

I can buy that the screen bleed is fixable but I can't see how they can resolve this problem; it appears to be an inherent flaw in design.

I've had the same issue (White 32gb 3G), and went back to the apple store this morning.
They said this is 'within manufacturing tolerances' but offered an exchange anyway.
They have ordered one in for me, does this mean I'll be getting a 'new' replacement (as opposed to reconditioned)?

Also, if, once I've checked the replacement, it seems no better than what I have, I assume I don't need to go ahead and swap if I don't want to?

About Every ipad 2 and ipad 3 have this issue and even in the same spots, and also after looking a bit at my ipad i saw black marks under the glued areas, and the same goes for the demo ipads in the store, so in my opinion this is a part of the design!
also, a lot of Manufacturers glue the parts like that so the products will become nore tolerant in extreme temperatures.

and if you'll notice in 1:19 in the following video that the women installing the screen is not gluing all of it but just cetain parts of it:

every apple genius will tell you that this is normal, because this is a part of the design.

problem solved :)
