Anandtech has determined the iPad GPU to be the PowerVR SGX543MP2, a more advanced dual-core version of the PowerVR GPU found in the original iPad and iPhone 4. Architecturally the 543MP2 has more than twice the compute horsepower of the SGX 535 used in Apple's A4. Each shader pipeline can execute twice the number of instructions per clock as the SGX 535, and then there are four times as many pipes in an SGX 543MP2 as there are in a 535.They found that the new graphics processor offered over 3-5x the speed in simple geometry tests over the original iPad.

Anadtech then used the GLBenchmark 2.0 to provide a broader range of testing and included the recently released Motorola Xoom tablet. They found that in this overall benchmark, the new iPad 2 ran at 5.4x the framerate of the original iPad and 3.7x the speed of the Xoom.

Other benchmarks showed improvements ranging from 3x-7x the speed of the original iPad. Ultimately, this will mean that developers will be able to offer significantly higher graphics quality and performance on the new iPad 2 over previous generation devices. We've already seen some early results in Infinity Blade, but the changes should become more dramatic as developers have time to sit down with the new devices. Of course, the iPad 2 represents a small percentage of iOS devices, but Apple is widely expected to integrate the same CPU/GPU into their upcoming iPhone 5 and future iPod Touch product lines.

Well, that has to make all the rest of the players in the pad market cringe just a bit.....

Apple is mad at themselves for missing the entire GPU, and gaming market in the desktop world.

But the mobile space is a new market, a new opportunity, and apple is getting it right this time!

Wow, this is a Xoom beating. So much for the Xoom fans. Guess it will fade off into oblivion, kind of like it already is at Best Buy...one unit, on the back wall of the store between one other unit of the Samsung Galaxy and Rock Band instruments for the PS3.

I got my iPad *15 days before iPad 2 was announced...

And it's already feeling outdated.

Too bad fandroids don't realize their device is trying to beat an 1 year old Apple device. Of course iPad 2 smokes the wann-bee device. ;)

You know, all the screen problems, etc and now they have to come up with this half baked benchmark to show how good a crappy product is, wew!

Get a grip, the iPad has seen its day, time to move on.

Who wants a third peice of electronic junk to carry around anyway?

Not I.

There have been leaks for MONTHS. And you post on this forum, so I expect you to know better. A warning should have gone off on your head about buying a product 10 months after it was released.

That's only because you make it feel outdated. I only got my iPad a few weeks ago, but it doesn't feel outdated, as it still does everything as easily and quickly as it did a few months ago, just because a new one is released doesn't mean it's bad hardware, just not as good as a new one, but it does everything I want at a great speed, so that doesn't matter.

I detect some slight jealousy. Why, because you can't afford one yourself? Trying to convince yourself how "crappy" this product is.

Wow...wish I hadn't spent the money on my Core i7 13" Macbook pro ...could have got two of these beasts :D :D :D

Maybe next time....

make up your mind. You said you got it a few weeks ago and in the same long-winded sentence, you said it feels as "quickly" as it did a few MONTHS ago. Which is it? I mean if you're going to be an apple fan, at least keep your story straight, moreso in the SAME SENTENCE>

these tests are not at a level playing field. The ipad 2 is running at 1024x768 and the xoom is running at 1280x1024. So, the xoom is has about 60% more pixels to render.

Edit: xoom is actually 1280x800, so it's only a ~25% increase in pixels. Still a factor but apple's chip seems faster even when adding that in.

why? These things have nothing on real laptops. This has no real OS.. can't install real applications and no file system. I have an ipad 2. DOn't get me wrong, it's fun, but don't pretend a limited ipad beats out a real laptop in raw speed/gpu power.

Oops...... the Xoom Army won't be very happy about this news.

There must be a flaw in that benchmark test.... yeah, that's it. ;)

Funny, not only was everyone talking about the new iPad 2 then, but supplies of the iPad 1 were pretty much drying up. You mustn't do much research before a fairly large purchase

It's weird though that it's feeling outdated. Didn't you just buy it 15 days ago? How is it no longer doing what you bought it to do?

Quoted for idiocy!
