iPad 2 no brainer

I happen to have both, but I'd say that I'd rather live with an just the iPhone 4S than a 4 and the iPad 2, if I had no other choice.

The main factor for me is the 4S camera. It's now my point-and-shoot, so I can't live without it.

If money is tight (just sort of if you're considering this combination:rolleyes:), go for iPhone 4 plus iPad 2! I have iPad 2 and just upgraded from 4 to 4s. While 4s is a definite upgrade, I would never consider giving up option of owning an iPad 2 for the 4s upgrade features!

i habe both too, and i i have to choose one, that would be the 4s for sure.
i love the ipad, but the iphone it more useful at least to me

Here is what I did: I got a MBP for graduation, so that covers my normal computer usage. I will get an ipad2 for christmas which I will mostly use in classes to watch the pdf files of lectures and such, and to just use the iPad for the things that you use an iPad for. ;)
I also just bought a used iPhone 4 from ebay, which was fairly cheap (adding the bonus that I just got it replaced by an Apple Genius).
So if you can afford the 3G iPad, why don't you just get the iPad wifi only and buy a used iPhone 4 in ebay (in my opinion it really does not matter if it is 4 or 4S, I could be wrong, but for me the difference is minimal), jailbreak it, and use the iPad over the iPhones dat plan and Tether.

OT: Is it possible to tether in iOS 5 without jail breaking it?

The best device is the one you have with you all the time :) 4S for me any day. Had the ipad 2 and its sat on the coffee table most of the time. If I am going to lug something around the 11" air is much more versatile and combined with the 4S 3G speeds its a great combo.

Only advantage the ipad had was better better life.

I don't think a lot of you are understanding the question. If you could only have one or the other, which would it be? Disregarding what you actually own right now, or your want for "both!" :p

There is nothing to understand. One is a phone, the other is a tablet. If you need something that you can take with you all the time and make phone calls, iPad is NOT an option.

Otherwise, just about everything that iPad does (except things like running iPad apps, typing with 10 fingers) can be done on the 4s.

Well I have no need for an iPad, and have an iPhone 4S, therefore I would get any iPhone before an iPad.

I have both but I'd choose the iPhone 4S. It's with me all the time and it can do everything my iPad can do and then some. When you need more screen real estate just use your laptop (assuming you have one). The iPad is great, but I find it to be a bit of a luxury.

4s. it's more practical and will see more day to day use.

plus the ipad3 will be out soon

Both.

4S - if you run around a lot and need portability + mobility

iPad2 - if you sit in one spot most of the time

Both - if you can afford it.

Let's just say you have $800 and crazy enough to purchase either an unlocked 64GB iPhone 4s or iPad 2 16GB + iPhone 4 16/32GB for roughly the same price.

1. iPhone 4s 64GB, you get

  • The best camera available on iDevice (8MP + better lens and sensor)
  • Slightly under clocked iPad 2 CPU
  • More portability, smaller footprint and one device at a time, fit on your pocket
  • 1080p video recording
  • Siri .. use it or not, still a nice bonus

However, you also get

  • Smaller screen
  • No real estate for working or browsing full sites
  • Bad battery life .. embarassing

2. iPad 2 + iPhone 4

  • Slightly better CPU on iPad 2
  • Big screen for anything you can do more
  • Superb battery on iPad
  • For same money, you get 2 device for 2 different purpose, specialized :D

However you also get

  • Less good camera, iPhone 4 is decent 5MP, but iPad 2 camera is so suck Apple don't even write the numbers on spec sheet .. it's the same as we find on current iPod touch. Lousy 1MP rear camera. 720p video recording & 1280x720 still photo.
  • No 1080p recording on both device
  • More hassle, 2 device means twice the maintenance, managing, syncing or whatever. You can't always bring both with you
  • No Siri support (at least for the moment)

So people .. for this kind of question, please stop saying "both", it's childish .. It's obvious you can get the best by getting both, but that's not the point, there are some obstructions for every situation. Getting both is no brainer when you have just enough cash to do it. And if that's the case, OP wouldn't ask here.

Yeah I understand iPad or iPhone serves sort of different purpose, iPhone make phone calls, do 99% what iPad can, only on a less convenient screen.

But for me, I'd go with iPhone 4s as my only device first. Whenever next revision of iPad comes, I'm sure you already have just enough money to buy it. And you also get the improvement in which iPad 2 doesn't cut it.

both...
4S is not that big of a deal if that's the option.
I already have iPad2 so I went for 4S, but If I could only only get older 4 and iPad, than I would get both :)
