I ended up downgrading my wifi iPad 2 to 4.3.3
No problems whatsoever...just use alt (or shift) restore and guide it to the 4.3.3 software and let iTunes do it's work....so glad to be rid of the shutting down...will wait to hear what beta 2 is like before trying iOS 5 again.

There are a couple of other long threads about this now. I'm giving the Auto Lock = Never option a try, see if that solves the problem.

Sure, you go to settings --> general --> multitasking gestures. It is located under "Restrictions" and above "Date & Time, Keyboard, International, Accessibility, and Reset"

Thanks for that but it's not there on the iPad 1 which makes me wonder why they omit features like that on one but not the other.

Thanks for the suggestion is disabling mail banners. I actually disabled all notification center alerts and my iPad no longer shuts off after a period of inactivity.

Well after much thought, I reverted back to 4.3.3. I didn't see a point in turning off the new iOS 5 features to get it to work, and also with Netflix not working, it was a major bummer. I have the iPad 2 WiFi model, so it was as easy as downloading 4.3.3, then restoring through itunes manually pointed to the file. I did some reading online and people kept saying to downgrade iTunes back to 10.3 (I'm on 10.5 because of iOS 5), and put iPad into DFU mode, but I didn't have to do any of this. I'll probably upgrade after a couple of new builds.

cant even turn one of my ipads on 😡

it has happened to me a lot what i did was plug it into a charger then hold the power and home button for 10 seconds let go of the power button and keep holding the home button till you see the apple logo.

I think I fixed it by turning off message fetching and setting it to manual.

I think the problem lies on those restoring from a previous backup. I went and turn back on banner notification and now there is no freezing. Maybe all one have to do is tinker the on/off of some of these notifications.

I didnt restore any backup and did a a completely new restore, and I have this problem, it is manegable it has happened twice, but only after verry long periods of sleep.

Things have been pretty stable for me since I set Auto Lock to Never, but I did have it lock up once overnight, so now I also put it into Airplane Mode at night. That seems to cure the last glitch.

Well, I went back to 4.3.3 due to the freezing and picture frame didn't work. Since I'm a dev. I still have multi-gestures with 4.3.3 so I'm good. 🙂 I do like the new notification though. And found an app that didn't work on 4.3.3 now works on 5 🙂

You sir, are an idiot.

And you sir, made me choke on my diet coke, LMAO! 😛

My iPad 2 is also doing this random shutting off where only a hard reboot is the only way to restart. I just turned off the auto lock so here's hoping that fixes it until the new build is released!

On the dev forum, i posted about this
and someone on there said it had something to do with the smart cover.
I turned that feature off for a few days and finally turned it back on and my ipad doesnt shut off anymore. Not sure if thats the total solution but it seemed to work for me.

I got this a few times on beta 1, but now it's happening constantly on beta 2! Sometimes as little as 5 minutes after shutting my smart cover and trying to wake up. Sometimes it takes a couple of hours to happen. But it's already happened about 6 or so times since installing it. The only remedy is to hold power and home for > 10 seconds and reboot.

I will try disabling the smart cover setting and see if that helps. I will also try the no lock setting. I already tried turning off mail notifications and that did not fix it. Obviously, there's something causing it to hang during sleep. It has never done it while the screen was on.

If I can't get this fixed, I'll have to go back to official firmware. If it just happened once every couple of days or so, I could live with it, but not several times per day!

In reply to myself,

I disabled the "iPad Cover Lock" option in Settings and have been manually pressing the power button to sleep the device when I'm done with it. So far, I've gone all day without a hard freeze. So while I can't conclude this has fixed the problem, so far it has not done it! I also posted a bug on the developer site so hopefully they will be able to identify the problem. There does not appear to be a crash log generated when this problem occurs because nothing shows up in the log in Xcode.

Take his advice. I have no sympathy for non-developers who whine and complain when they run into problems.

For the record, I have not yet run into this problem on Beta 2.

I have this issue as well and it is to be expected in a beta release. Other betas of iOS for iPad have had the same issue.
