With 31 magnets, I wonder if I'm going to be dragging a trail of paperclips and odd little metal bits around everywhere I take my ipad2??

Think of how stationary it will be on a metal desk!

That's one question I've had about Smart Covers. So you can fold it flat around the back of the iPad? I do this with my current iPad cover all the time, but I've yet to see a product photo with the cover wrapped flat around the back.

Yep, folds nicely behind it and stays out of your way. Its comfortable to hold it and have the cover folded back.

It would have been nice if they had magnets on the back that hold it completely in place while it was back there. I find one or two of the 'panes' can tend to flap around a bit while folded in the back. However, not really that bit of a deal.

All the videos hinted at it, but it's interesting to see evidence that these are righty-only covers. I was thinking about getting one for my mom--she uses a stylus when annotating images--but since she's a lefty it looks like shed have to completely remove the cover every time.
Flanders and the Leftorium might need to come out with a southpaw edition.

Yes, I want to know this too. Does anyone here have one and can give us the answer? Can you fold it round while leaving it attached to the device?

Yep. Here is a pic showing it doing just that. On a side note, the iPad 2 fits PERFECTLY in the InCase Protective Sleeve with the cover still attached for travel.

Well, at least there is something there to justify the cost. Makes the 29$ they are charging for the bumper look even more silly.

wondered what your 'little ray of sunshine' take on it might be. Thought it was going to be "31 magnets! So typical of Apple to swindle us like that. Needed to be at least 285 ruby-tipped ferro-plasma magnets for them to justify that price"

If the magnets were strong enough to do that, you wouldn't stand any chance at all of removing the cover from the iPad...

I assume a magnet needs to be fairly strong to affect a HD inside the aluminum enclosure of a MacBook and I assume modern HDs have some degree of magnetic shielding, but still, having more magnets in my computer bag makes me a bit uneasy.

Or just turn the device upside down. Sure, the home button isn't in the best place then but everything else in the UI will reorient.

I love the smart cover. Sure it just protects the front glass. But it does it well and is just a ingenious accessory. I have already ordered a sleeve to put it in when I take the iPad out on the road. But once I'm on the plane, in the hotel room, etc it will be out of the sleeve.

I think Apple's case for the first iPad was horrible. Most ugly thing to come out of Cupertino.

If you ever get a chance to take apart a hard drive, do so. It's pretty fascinating. And you'll find that there are already some pretty flippin' strong magnets inside it. Lots of fun to play with.

I wouldn't worry about magnetic fields affecting modern hard drives.

Is anybody worried that these magnets might potentially affect the data on a magnetic HD in a macBook stored next to an iPad? Or are they not strong enough for that?

HDDs are far more resistant than you may think. Often even very strong magnets won't do any harm.
I reckon the cover magnets shouldn't cause any harm.

Sounds like the magnets aren't strong enough to zap a hard drive, but what about carrying the iPad by your side next to your wallet in your pocket - any risk to the magnetic strips on credit cards?

Yes. To everyone concerned about magnetic fields damaging your hard drive, look at this picture:

Those magnets come from right inside a hard drive, as part of the read/write head mechanism. They sit less than 1/4" away from the platters.

Don't worry about it.

Magnets - great idea, but what happens if you put your credit card, hotel room key, air tickets near your ipad/smart cover!

Surely this is a recipe which could result in the ipad is erasing magnetic strips on those items if they’re in contact with each other?

Any one willing to try mating their credit card with the case magnets, in the name of research :D

DOH! ALREADY BEEN DISCUSSED - NOTE TO SELF READ THREAD FIRST

I wonder if all these magnets are low enough power to be safe for someone with a cardiac pacemaker? Pacemakers are typically implanted in the left or right chest area and sometimes in the abdomen. I could see someone carrying an iPad with it resting against their chest or abdomen, thereby putting the iPad and/or Smart Cover directly over the site of the pacemaker.

Typically, it's relatively strong magnetic fields that are a concern. But that's a crap load of magnets in the two products combined. Ya think Apple tested for this scenario?

Do the products come with any sort of warning for cardiac pacemaker patients?

Yes you can, there are two options actually for putting it on the back. You can just flap the entire thing around the back flat against the ipad. Or you can fold the cover in half flat and flip it around back. So if you are holding with one hand (your left), it's easy to grip the left side. If you hold it with your right hand, you just turn the ipad upside down, and then the cover is on the right side.

I find with no cover on the back, the thing slides in your hand.
