Smaller versions would come with a smaller battery, and when that happens the 10 hours-between-charges drops to 5 or 6 hours. I'm loving my 7" Acer Iconia A100, but it warns me of low battery before a workday has passed, and that's an inconvenience the iPad doesn't duplicate.

You can't hold the iPad 2 in 1 hand while you are using the screen with your other hand for minutes.

Surely you are jesting.

The iPad 2 weighs 809 grams (that's with the poly cover). That's about the weight of the sourdough bread I bake.

If you can't handle 809 grams for any amount of time, you need to re-evaluate your lifestyle or hire a personal trainer. My goodness, little kids hauling their school work home are in better shape!

Probably I'll buy the iPhone 5 when it comes out.

Am i seriously the only one who finds it uncomfortable to hold it in 1 hand?

It is indeed uncomfortable to hold in one hand for a long time, but what do you expect? The aluminum and glass inevitably weighs more than some cheap plastic and adds to the durability of the iPad.

I say this with all kidding aside and the utmost seriousness, but Steve Jobs can hold an iPad up in the air in one hand, and he has obvious strength limitations due to his health. So...

i move around lots and generally lay it on the bed to watch so i don't really feel the "pinch" per say. having said that, imagine if the next iPad is as thin as the MacBook Air 11"'s screen.

Floating bones is all about the concert of tensions in our musculoskeletal system. While we can hold part o.........comes automatic. If you are a heavy iPad user, doing this one thing can have a huge impact on your long-term structural health.

Good advice! With that said, I am beefing up the beer belly for the iPad to lean on.... hopefully six packs a day will do =D

My very petite girlfriend is able to use (hold) and iPad 2 for a very long time.
I if you're having trouble holding an iPad, I'd suggest selling it and using the money to get a gym membership and hit the weights!

These personal attacks are funny considering I'm stronger than 99.99% of the people here on this forum :D

I saw some reviews where they also said it's not comfortable To use the machine with 1 hand, so I'm hardly the only one.

Ha yeah. You're really proving it

Even I can hold my iPad 1 in one hand for a long period of time which is heavier than the iPad 2.

What would you feel about Plastic?
And when I say Plastic I don't mean cheap and nasty, but very high quality and superbly finished off plastic.

That's going to be the only long term way to lose the weight is it not, both for the screen and the case.

Take glasses (spectacles) they all used to have glass lenses, and then people realised as time has moved on, Plastic was a lot lighter, with scratch resistant coatings, anti glare coatings etc etc.

Now I'd guess the vast majority of glasses are plastic as it's simply more practical and comfortable than old fashioned glass.

So perhaps in time our current mental attitude which says plastic=cheap will fade away and we will come to accept that actually it's stronger and lighter than the current glass and metal build.

mate, i don't think we have met

jokes aside, it's all about the angles as everyone here has mentioned.

It's not the weight, so much, as the thinness. A bit of finger fatigue can set in, when clasping it for too long.
When holding it in one hand, I place my pinky finger underneath, to add some support.
I notice, as soon as I fold the Smart Cover in half and fold it to the back of the iPad, the extra thickness makes the iPad significantly more comfortable to hold.
I sincerely hope that the next iPad is at least the same thickness. There has to be a limit, before things get silly.

OP, no offence, but get over yourself, stronger than 99.9% of the people on here? If you complain about the weight of the iPad2, I doubt your claim.

You might be more built, you might be able to bench more than a lot of the people on here, but you clearly don't have the arm strength/endurance to hold a small weight for extended periods.

I have no doubt that you work out, good for you champ, but don't go around making claims about how you are the strongest man on the forums and that everyone calling you out is soft etc, you are coming across as a keyboard warrior.

EDIT: I would like to point out, that I am not trying to start dram with the OP, I just think that we all need to not jump to conclusions, for example, the OP says he works out, he may well indeed workout, but it appears that the iPad causes discomfort when holding it for long periods of time.

The rest of you, good on you, you can hold an iPad for longer than the OP, give the guy a break.

as I've said before: bench at gym is, not the benchmark for strength. I find this quite ironic.

This is another sort of true piece of info, benching 200 pounds doesn't mean you are stronger than someone who can deadlift 200 pounds.

The reverse is also true, a perfectly trained body for strength will probably not resemble the early Schwarzenegger shot posted before.

Glass feels much better than plastic and that is important since you are touching it.

Most heavy weight-lifters have terrible muscular endurance (I would know, I used to be one), as they often don't excersise their stabilizer muscles...which ironically, are the muscles that are more important in our normal daily activities...like stabilizing an iPad for a couple of minutes!

There's more to fitness than how much you can lift in short bursts. Not sure anyone who can't stabilize a 1.5 pound object for an extended period of time without feeling strained should be bragging about their fitness....

Off topic, but had to chime in!

I think people here have been spending too much time in the gym and not enough reading about things like... ergonomics.

Any weight becomes uncomfortable after a period of time. The iPhone is much easier to hold one handed, both because it's lighter and it's small enough to be held comfortably in one hand. It's hard to hold the iPad in one hand in a "balanced" way, since you only really can hold it on one side so it is tending to slide out of your grip. Holding a device which is slim like the iPad, tight so that it isn't slipping/tipping out of your hand can be uncomfortable after even a short period of time.

plastic does have benefits, but downsides as well. i still believe most companies use plastics as a way to make things cheaper. most high end glasses i've seen use glass lenses that are much lighter than before, and keep their optical advantages. it just costs more.

that said, there have been rumors of apple playing with carbon fiber shells for a while now.

The shell's weight is trivial compared to the glass. About 4.5 ounces. You'll shave 20% off with carbon fiber (you can't do 100% carbon fiber at this point, you still need some composite materials) or about an ounce.

Thing is, i got muscles :p

I was using the iPad 2 in the Apple store for 10 minutes holding it in 1 hand while I was operating the machine with my other, my hand started to get sore.

I'm hardly a weak person by any standards since I go to the gym :p

Read more books, especially hardcovers. It will train your hand, wrist and arm. I have no problem reading books and newspapers on iPad held with my right hand for an hour straight. It will get tired eventually, of course. Otherwise get a stand.
