Every time I see your posts, it's a criticism of Apple. Care to tell us why you spend so much time on a website when all you do is criticize the company this website is based on? There's a term for users like that, I won't say it though as we all know what that term is.

Also, why are you so angry all of the time, it's just a product made by Apple(that will outsell all the others like crazy), who cares how much ram it has, if it works superbly. I guess I would complain too if I wanted to have 36 tabs open just so I could have something to bitch about.

Bravo!Well said.

Ultimately, it will all come down to "how well does it work?". Consumers picking the hardware up at a store and playing with it. Apple does not hide from the public with their devices. Go into any store and simply use it, day after day if you like. It is far easier to evaluate an Apple product than any other. Whatever the RAM size proves to be, I absolutely gaurantee it will be a smooth and class leading experience. One that makes the consumer want to buy, and one that will keep the iPad in the lead for another product cycle. That is the real job of the designers. Not to build the "I only want to buy it once, and for only $399" product that so many whine for. Apple needs headroom for next year, and every year after. To build a product too far in-front, that no one wants to upgrade regularly is simply bad business. It's a delicate line that Apple walks well.

So, you saying that Apple intentionally uses sub-par parts in order to leave a room for the next year. I do not disagree. This also means that those who buy non-Apple products are always one year ahead of Apple users.

As long as the user experience isn't affected it should be OK. I don't have an iPad but I've played around with one and can't stand watching Safari load pages. Since Apple's multitasking doesn't keep everything running in the background, large amounts of RAM aren't necessary.

If Apple REALLY saddled the iPad2 with 256MB RAM AGAIN then SJ is certifiably insane. I'm sorry to say, but you have to be a complete MORON to drop $500+ for a device that doesn't allow you to open more than 2 tabs in Safari.

Actually anyone who is getting upset now because they think it doesn't is certifiably insane.

If this was the case, then Apple would have outsold IBM PCs, wouldn't they? Mac OS would have been the number one Desktop OS, not Windows?

No. I'm saying putting out a "retina" display with 75% of the pixels in a 30 inch desktop monitor, or worrying about beating every speck from every competitor is not good business. Apple makes a great product that is the sum of it's parts, and it is that sum that is generally a better overall experience (and no less than equal) than every other offering. And at a better price than the competition. And when people actually use it in a store, the iPad has no issue comparing to ANY product out there. So it will again stay at the head of the pack in sales. If it used sub-par parts, it wouldn't compete well enough to stay in the lead. My point is it would not be advantageous strategy to release the iPad today that will be needed to lead the industry in 2012 or 2013. You would impact sales next year and the year after. That's bad business. Like the anecdote of stumbling across a bear with someone in the woods. I don't need to be faster than the bear, just faster than you. Apple only needs to edge out the competition this year with this model, not build the product people are willing to wait till 2012 for. Because those people won't get that from the competition either.

Unlike a lot of people, I want the iPad as a legitimate tool, not toy. I'm a flight instructor and would love to use one in an airplane. The live navigational programs they make for the iPad are absolutely stunning. Navigational charts, airport diagrams, ATC information, GPS tracking, etc. Problem is, these apps are choppy on the iPad 1. Like wait 3 seconds to load when I click on a moving map choppy. It needs to be fast.

That said, if Apple didn't upgrade the RAM to a minimum 512 I'm not buying. Even then, 512 is a disappointment and there's a good chance I won't buy. Once again, Apple shows its greed. I love Apple in theory, but this **** pisses me the **** off.

Game devs are always the worst examples because they're always going to be pushing the envelope. It doesn't matter how much RAM the iPad has, some dev will fill it and cause the system to "stutter" after you've run it. Now if that happened when running most games I could see your point. As it is, Infinity Blade is the only one that I've had trouble with.

I chose Infinity Blade because it is an indication of future gaming apps. Gameloft will now be using the Unreal engine. Epic announced that devs don't need to pay royalties until profits pass 50k. There is the possibility that resource hungry games will become more popular and I'm addressing that. I think it's the perfect example as most of the apps in the top fifty are games. You can't seriously underwrite games when it represents a major share in Apple sales in iPad, iPhone and iPod/Touch devices. My point is, right now 512MB of RAM is having an issue with the latest game from a very well-known developer. Pushing the envelope is a positive trait in gaming, but clearly Epic chose not to account for background programs. It is suggested to quit all programs and even restart the iPhone...

If you remember the 3G at 128MB of RAM, restarting the iPhone was a common requisite of new games. I think it won't be long before the same can be said of the iPhone 4. So given the questionable resources of the iPad 2, that is a justifiable concern for me. I do realize not all users are gamers, but there are enough to warrant representation for this concern.

Do people buy a car based solely on the horsepower?

"Hmmm....... it's kind of ugly, sucks gas like it's going out of style, but it does have more horsepower..... I'll take it!" :p

That is a really good analogy for what the spec sheet chasers are doing.

All those who claim 256 MB would be enough RAM for the "non-techies" obviously have no idea what they are talking about. Tons of apps crash right now on the current iPad because there simply isn't enough RAM. You can say "lazy developers" all you want but it's just a fact that after iOS eats up at least half of what RAM there is (and that only gets worse with each update to IOS), developers are left with very little resources to work with. Multitasking? Forget it. My iPad can get about two apps running if I'm lucky, 3 if you include mail which is always running and cannot be shut down. The RAM situation on the current iPad is such a bottleneck in usability that it actually reeks of planned obsolescence.

The claim the iPad "needs" to have 1 GB of RAM is baloney as well. The competition may very well need it, but the fact is that IOS is just more efficient with RAM and doesn't need as much. Consider that the iPhone 4 has 70% of the resolution of the iPad, 512 MB of RAM and can multitask so many apps at once it's ridiculous. People find it disheartening to have the iPad match the RAM specs of a phone but going from 20 apps at once to 15 isn't really gonna be all that noticeable. Yes, I'd take 1 GB if I could get it, but I know it's well above the point of diminished returns and not reasonable to expect (at least until we get that retina display iPad ;)

Thank you. Great post. I don't know how folks can be so angry / ill-informed / illiterate.

Apple has an awesome product. I personally don't think anyone will ever surpass Apple for its tablet or its overall experience, but I don't worry about. I just love the Apple products. I can't believe how well they work right out of the box and seem to last forever. Even the iPad 1 will serve my purposes "forever." I will get the iPad 2 for my wife, and the iPad 3 for my granddaughter.

Again, thanks for a great post.

I'm confused. I have 5 tabs open in safari now on my iPad. Working fine. What are you rambling about?

It's been long known that Mac is number one among creative users. "IBM PCs" and WINTEL PCs are, for the most part, dumb terminals on millions of government desks.

If you want to see real comparison between those who use what, stop by any great American university, like Harvard, UCLA, or USC.

Well, actually, Apple has had 90% of the computer market on products valued over $1,000 for quite some time. Just like BMW doesn't try to compete with KIA, percent of an overall market share is not relevant. Apple is a leader in the market they have positioned themselves in. There is a reason why the maker of OS-X is valued at more than the maker of that PC software you speak off. By that measure, they are number one, but I guess you can choose whatever metric you like to measure success ;)

The 2005 Lotus Elise has a 1.8L, 190 HP engine.

The 2005 Boxter S has a 3.2L, 280 HP engine.

The Elise smokes the Boxter in the 1/4 mile (13.5sec for the Elise vs 13.7sec for the Boster).

If you shop for specs on paper, you're going to buy the Boxter S. You're a PC. And you just lost the race in front of your girl and everyone else on the street. Who's the idiot now?

It's proof positive that MS and its partners know how to fool the dumb general public into thinking they are buying a better product with fancy specs on paper. The rest of us know that if a 1gazillion gig RAM Android performs a task in 0.03sec and a 256MB/512MB RAM iPad performs the same task in the same 0.03sec, it makes no difference out in the real world. So keep buying your plastic pieces of cow dung with crap operating systems and keep telling yourself: ignorance is bliss.

Very well said.

Best spec: the battery lasts 10 hours. Almost everything else matters little.

No you won't.

Nobody in his right mind would buy a Boxter because the only statement you make by owning a Boxter is this: "I do not have enough money to buy a proper 911":D

I would rather have malaria than Boxter.:D

The statement you make by buying a BoxSter is I want a mid-engined convertible from Porsche. There is no other choice if you want that configuration. The mid-engined Porsches (Boxster and Cayman) handle far better on the limit than the 911 - the case could be made that the only statement you make by buying a 911 is that you're a poseur who buys based on perceived status rather than engineering excellence.

No, I don't own a Boxster, but I've driven one and they're terrific machines. Still trying to decide whether my savings are going towards a Boxster S or Cayman S.

From the reports, I have no doubt the performance of the iPad 2 is fantastic. The only thing I worry about with RAM is future iOS updates. I can't afford to buy a new iPad each year, and as Apple goes to iOS5 and beyond, I want a little future proofing. As tablets take off, we're going to do more with them, including more things at the same time. And that's where I think 512MB RAM (what I expect is in the iPad 2) is going to feel underwhelming down the road.

I've never had too little RAM, until I did.

If this was the case, then Apple would have outsold IBM PCs, wouldn't they?

At the time the PC came out, IBM had a gargantuan sales force and much larger sales channels. Every company had lots of IBM Selectric typewriters. The chant of IT people was that you couldn't get fired for buying IBM. The money to be made was in IBM PC software. The result was obvious. The Apple III was a failure, and momentum was lost for 2 decades.

Today, the tide has turned. The tables are reversed.

Apple is now the vendor with more high end retail shops than any of the competition. Every kid has an iPod. 200M iTunes accounts. 65% of Fortune 100 companies are already on the iPad bandwagon. And Apple has paid out $2B to paid app developers (versus what for Android and Blackberry combined?).

The biggest huge vertical enterprise equivalent to the old IBM is the current HP. Massive enterprise consulting. Printers everywhere. But nobody thinks webOS is going to outsell the iPad 2 this year.

No way.

Its ok I wont have that problem on my xoom.

I notice that you didn't post the next chart down which shows that an iPad beats a Xoom in battery life for wifi browsing by just a little bit.

Now please look up how they compare in standby battery life, the Xoom gets more than 2 weeks less: 2 weeks less battery life!

This is a good read lol

the cdma ipad 2 gets 9 hours of battery life

battery is the most damn impt spec for the ipad

256MB,512MB,1GB WHO CARE?

this is for the consumers, not tech savvies.
