I am nearly 70, wear glasses and have no problems reading on my iPad2. The screen is just fine for me. I went to an Apple store to look at the ipad3 and did not think the retina display was worth upgrading for.
I have the 64 gig version because this gives me enough storage so that when we go on trips I can have movies for flights, books and lots of room to backup photos from my DSLR every night.
For accessories I have the camera connector, which works very well, and also the one that allows me to connect the iPad to an HD TV via HDMI (digital av adapter). This is great to use in hotels for watching movies or photos from the iPad. I like to use the AVPlayer HD app for movies since it plays all formats, even mkv, which saves having to convert to an iTunes compatible format.
So I would say that the ipad2,is good enough and spend the money you save on 64 gig, and the camera and tv connectors.
