If you bought is a couple years ago, have you updated the firmware anytime recently?

If not, I'd suggest giving that a try to begin with.

As to changing the router, what you paid for it isn't really relevant; that's a sunk cost. If replacing it is the only apparent route then the question is what would it cost for a new one in comparison to what the old one would fetch on ebay.

Actually we did update the firmware recently because after my boyfriend got his Xoom, it got 10 times worse. Both my iPad and his Xoom would just stop connecting to the internet. It would show the wireless signal and it would be connected, but everything would time out. Everything worked fine from my laptop connected to the wireless though. We would have to reboot the router and then everything would work fine for a few more hours before it would do it again. It was weird because this literally happened the day he brought the Xoom home and it seemed to only affect the tablets.

We updated the firmware on the router and it has gotten better. We haven't had the time out issue but I do still lose connection once in a while. It used to drop several times each time I use it and now it only drops once every few times I use it so it is a LOT better...

I know the price isn't really relevant but the reason it was so expensive is because it has some features he said we need..which means replacing it would be just as expensive. I don't know anything about routers so I have no idea why we need it. Before we moved in together, I was fine with my cheap wireless router.

Well, so much for THAT idea...

Maybe, maybe not. Really depends on the specific features needed and whether you still need the particular features that drove the router choice in the first place.

I wish I had a simple solution, but firmware update was the only thought I had. I can say that my Netgear WNL3500L hasn't shown any problems with my ipad1 on either iOS 4.2.1 or iOS 4.3 if that helps at all.

The problem I have seen that was mentioned above by others is that it says it is connected to the access point but no Internet traffic will get through. All my other devices on the network work fine. Doing a reboot always fixes it. I have seen this 5 times now. I have always been set to operate on 802.11g only. I am going to try the the WMM thing now. I have the dlink DI-624.

Enabling WMM was a disaster. It immediately made the connection flaky. I am still having the same problems. Hopefully a future update to iOS 4.3 will fix it.

The only problems I have with Wifi on the iPad2 are the same ones I'm having with my Macbook Pro at the university where I work. I don't think the iPad2 is dropping the Wifi, I think it is my network.

That said I did have an iPad1 and it had a dropping problem with the first OS. But it got fixed with the first update.

My iPhone 4 is finding about 8-10 wifi networks along with my MBP, including my own network which has a full signal, my new iPad 2 only finds my own and maybe one other and gets 2/3 bars max. Did I get a lemon or you think its a software issue? I just upgraded to 4.3.1.

i had a similar problem with my iphones with a cheap wireless N AP i bought a while back. when you initially register the device with itunes it makes you name it.. the default name is like "blah's iPad" or whatever. it seems my cheap AP didn't like the 's in the name. after renaming it to blahpad or whatever i quit having issues.

i doubt this is your problem, but thought i would throw it out there anyway.

Good call

Go to 192.168.1.1 to access your router's settings, if it's set to "mixed", try setting it to one. Example: "wireless N only" or "wireless G only" I had the same problem, tried that and haven't disconnected yet *knock on wood*

+1. That's exactly how I solved the problem. My router was set to wireless g/n mixed. Works fine when set to n only or g only. I'm on g only bc some older devices in my house don't support n.

Apple must respond and fix this!

I think we need to launch a public campaign to demand a fix and explanation from Apple. Here are the facts: tons of people are experiencing serious wifi problem with their brand new iPad 2. Apple never came out to admit publicly about this - leaving those poor staff at Apple store giving us contradicting answers or no answer at all. Some say it's the hardware problem. Some say it's software. Either way, since both are Apple products, it is a DEFECTIVE product. How many of us have wasted endless hours trying to fix this with no avail. How much productivity we've lost because of this?

It's happening at my house, and ALL public wifi networks that I've been to in the past month with different routers and hardwares. So the fix I see on forum about changing it to G or N only won't work. We can't go around to change other routers' setting. Most of the people who got the iPad want to bring a nice, light weighted device to work or play anywhere we want. And we can't do it now because of this issue.

Steve Jobs. We love you and your products. But this is completely IRRESPONSIBLE. Fix it! And no BS about how we should be holding the iPad either.

Every Apple product I have does this. Drives me nuts, but I really think its my old (un-upgradeable) router. Ill be picking up an Extreme soon and just throw em all on the 5gig N only

I've seen both the iPad 1 & iPad 2 having Wifi issues with iOS 5.0B1. Its not that its dropping the connection, but its really slow; nearly like its having issues resolving DNS.

[EDIT] Figured I should add that I have an Airport Extreme using N & G networks. iPhone 4, iPad & iPad 2 are on the G and the Mac Mini & MBP are on the N

Wirelessly posted (iPhone 4: Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; U; CPU iPhone OS 4_3 like Mac OS X; en-us) AppleWebKit/534.32 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/5.0.2 Mobile/8F190 Safari/6533.18.5)

I have had no probles with my linksys routers. I have a fairly large house so I have multiple routers. All but 1 are configered as Access Points. All are now setup for N. When I had some G devices I just setup a cheap G Access Point for that. Long story but I want max speed of wireless N and I had extra routers to play with. The person that said her husband needs an expensive router for some features while she was happy with her old cheap router. Ask him to setup your old router as an Access Point and you can simply use that one.

No wifi problems here, at home, at my cousin's apartment or public wifi hotspots.

I just got this wifi only iPad 2 from BB last week and it's been perfect thus far! :)

Just got my first iPad 2. My WIFI disconnects a lot. If I go in and disable and reenable, it works again. I know the early gen one had some problems, but didn't expect this. Anyone else having this issue?

  • How long have you owned it
  • Did you contact Apple ? How ?
  • Have you exhausted all methods of repair?

I just got my iPad 2 today and it has the same download speed problems as the 1st gen. I have comcast 16mbps with an airport extreme router, two MacBook Pros, two iPhone 4s, an iPod touch, and now an iPad. The iPad is the ONLY device that gets slow download speeds. Kinda sucks....I was hoping this would be fixed by now :(

Maybe it's time to get a top-of-the-line third party router like the new Netgear N750 (Model WNDR4000) or Belkin N750 DB and see if that helps? I'm seriously considering getting one of these high-end routers, if only to allow me to extend the range of my home Wi-Fi access point to every corner of the house. :)

I have a 2Wire DSL modem with wireless. It works fine on my iPad2 and I just measured 4.5Mbps download. Whenever my partner uses her MacBook next to me, I lose my wifi. If I turn off wifi on my iPad and turn it back on, I'm fine again, but the MacBook always kicks me off when it joins the wifi.

I had my first iPad 2 replaced 2 weeks ago due to WiFi connectivity issues. It didn't matter what I did, it would always drop the connection. I finally got tired of dealing with it and had it replaced at Target. My 2nd one is perfect and never drops the WiFi connection.

Me too - but fixed in iOS5

I had this problem a lot on my work wifi, and a little at home. But I've upgraded to iOS5 beta, and it seems to be almost entirely fixed.
