I don't have an ipad and haven't thought about getting one, but I'd like to know if it could be a good device for a photographer.

Ideally, I'd like an ipad to preview my pictures directly from a SD card, and delete the bad ones from the SD card.

However :
1/ there is no SD slot in the ipad (but I saw that you can buy a SD adapter for the ipad)
2/ it's not possible to preview your photos directly from the SD card, you have to downlaod them first (since I work with 16 GB SD card, that takes a lot of time and that would fill the ipad too quickly)

Any hope for some kind of improvements on that on the next ipad ?

Try Eye-Fi. You can connect to it through the iPad, won't even have to take it out of the camera.

The trouble with cameras on the iPad is that it's such an awkward device to use as a camera. The iPhone is better but I can't see me ever using an iPad for serious photo work. It just doesn't fall to hand comfortably.

Agreed... you'll (hopefully) never see someone try to use an iPad for serious photo work. But there are more pedestrian uses for cameras on tablets; video chat or impromptu photos for reference, for instance. It's just so surprising that the iPad's is so staggeringly basic as to almost--almost--be not worth having on the device. Using Facetime indoors with anything other than bright, direct natural light looks pretty bad.

But yeah. Personally, the camera is far from the main make-or-break factor for me (which would be the display quality and processing power), but if I'm on the go with my iPad, I don't want to be reaching for my iPhone (or any phone, really) to do the vid conferencing. :)

Has anybody with an iPhone (or another personal hotspot enabled phone) purchased a 3G iPad? Why? What are the advantages?

Well, my iPhone Contract (T-Mobile Germany) comes with up to 3 Sim-Cards all using the same Phonenumber and share the Data plan. While the "Multisim" Option was originaly meant for people using a second Sim-Card for a Carphone or something like that, it comes in very handy now.
The main Advantage for me is that when I am away from Home and without the possibility to recharge my iPhone, i can save a lot of it's power by deactivating mobile data and using the iPad for all data needs.

As each additional Sim only cost a one time activation fee of (iirc) 5-10 €, or maybe even free if you have some complain about anything and convince the salesperson it may be a nice touch to compensate you for your troubles with a free additional sim...
