I have had two iPad 3s, both fully updated. No lag, no similar issues with the most recent updates. Heck, my mom's 2 is running the most recent update better than it did iOS 6.

The hardware of the 3s are fully capable of running iOS and handling the small requirements of iOS apps.

If you are experiencing issues I would suggest a hard reset if one has not been done since the last update, if that does not help try a wipe and reinstall.

As I said, my iPad mini first gen runs iOS 7.1 flawlessly, while iPad 3 has lags and stutters. So you mom's iPad 2 running really nicely on iOS 7.1 is believable. I wiped and did clean install a few days before iOS 7.1 released, and after I installed the 7.1, I wiped and did clean install once more as I was seeing the lag. But didn't help. For about a day or two, it seemed like it was running fine, but the lag and stutter came back. And another user reported the same thing above.

I have an iPad 2 and Air running 7.1 and I can confirm that it's quite smooth on the iPad 2. The only thing that separates both devices is the initial response of the orientation from portrait to landscape and when you close an app and the icon animations zoom back. The speed and smoothness are fine on the iPad 2 it's just the rotation of the Air is pretty much instantaneous. I see no stuttering on the iPad 2 whatsoever.

I am led to believe this is a personal iPad issue, not an ipad 3 general issue. As I stated before, I have had two different iPad3s that have had zero problems and In fact function better than ever with the newest upgrade. Do you have enough free space on the device (they work optimally with about 15% free storage I have found)? Do you keep tabs open in safari? Like I stated earlier, have you done a hard reset yet? Have you gone through the settings and streamlined everything (iCloud, Bluetooth, privacy, etc) sometimes an update can change things you didn't realize.

If you still have this problem I would suggest setting up an appointment with Apple, go through the online support center to run a diagnostic test yourself at home if you want too. My first 3 was bought preorder and I still have AC on it for a few more days - so chances are you still have coverage too (if you purchased AC) so if there is a true problem that can not be fixed they should swap it out for you if you act fast.

Thanks for letting me know. Unfortunately, I don't have AC, so the warranty is way over. I agree though that iOS 7.1 is definitely better than iOS 7. 7 was just generally really slow and laggy and stutters too, but now in 7.1, the animations are faster and generally smoother, but this lag I'm talking about happens not every single time I scroll or something, but when I go back to home screen from using some apps for a long time. It seems like the app I was using is still being processed in the background when I go to the home screen. It stutters then after 2 seconds, the home screen is very smooth again. The stutter is not extremely noticeable if you press the home button (it's still annoying though), but if you do 5 finger pinch gesture to go to home screen, the apps coming together animation stutters a lot. Again, this problem does not happen all the time. It will happen time to time if you use it quite a lot. But as I mentioned iPad mini does not have this stutter at all, and it's completely smooth and fast.

I am wondering if some settings I have on are causing this. I have

iCloud on (contacts, reminders, safari, keychain, pictures, documents and data, find my iPad,
reduce motion off,
reduce transparency off,
passcode on,
multitasking gestures on,
side switch used for rotation lock,
VPN off,
background app refresh off,
spotlight only has Applications on,
Siri off,
voiceover off,
Darken colors on,
reduce whitepoint on,
switch control off,
assistive touch off,

Could someone maybe diagnose it for me? Or from those who really don't have any stutters I mentioned, is it possible for you to take some time and list out like I did above so that I can try to use the same settings and see if it solve the problem?

Thanks so much..

I've been suffering with an up / down scrolling issue in things like the App Store and safari browser. The stutter is quite fast and rapid, and it comes and goes.

This started when I got an iPad 4 recently and the same day iOS 7.1 came out. I wondered what the hell was going on so referred to my iPad 3 which never did it and noticed that does it as well though not as often.

So I done a clean install of iOS 7.1 on the iPad 4 and it was really good for several hours but then started coming back again !

So now it's not a pleasant experience using my iPad's any more.

I too have a iPad 3 and it lags a lot lucky me i don't use it that often, or maybe it lags because im too used to the speed of my 5s or iPad mini retina...

So any update? I personally still have the lag, but it seems like if I close all apps from the multitasking mode, it doesn't lag as much, but sometimes it still lags when there is no other apps open and if I come back home from safari or some apps. 7.1.1 didn't fix it, but should I have hope for iOS 8 to fix this bug? Or should i just sell this iPad and get android tab (because i love customization)? Android tabs didn't lag as much for me. But the thing is iPad 3 doesn't cost much on ebay now so...yea :(

No one knows but Apple at this point. Maybe they might release the supported list of devices for iOS 8 shortly after WWDC.

hey roadster, thanks for letting me know. Is there any way I can revert back to iOS 7? If not, iOS 6? Can I just install ipsw from iTunes? Or apple blocked it? It's a shame if so because android users can install custom roms by better devs there is an issue like this from the manufacturers, but on apple device there is no way if we can't revert back.

Unfortunately no to all of the above. Your best bet is to wait and see if Apple will support the iPad 3 with iOS 8.

As an iPad 3 owner; I'll certainly root for you. However, if Apple had to squeeze every drop out of iOS 7.1.1 to make it run on iPad 3; I cannot fathom how (or why) Apple would then squeeze an even more demanding iOS 8 to run smoother than iOS 7.1.1 on iPad 3. If at all iPad 3 gets iOS 8 in the first place, I fear only the worst.

We have precedent! ;) Mac Os 10.7 was a poor and slow junk. Mac Os 10.8 run better on the same machines.

I think Apple has not "squeezed every drop out of iOS 7.1.1." Apple will optimize iOS more.

For the upcoming iOS-powered iWatch, less RAM directly correlates to more standby battery life, which is a key problem in development.

The iOS 7 redesign was the biggest redesign since iOS 1, and iOS 2 and 3 were more optimized and ran better on the same hardware than iOS 1.

The OS X 10.7 redesign was the biggest redesign since OS X 10.0, and OS X 10.8 and 10.9 were more optimized and ran better on the same hardware than OS X 10.7.

I've got this issue on my ipad now, it just cuts music off, stops it, stutters it etc. All was fine before going to 7.1.1 - I have no intention of buying a new iPad as I see zero reason to upgrade from the 3, it does everything I could ever want. Have you resolved your issue?

Agreed with the above. I just wanted to emphasize that the A5X was a poor choice for the iPad 3. The performance was always an issue regardless of OS.

That is nonsense. If the iPad 3 can play infinity blade III without problems, then it should handle iOS animations fine.

Are you implying that the iPad 3 is running on maximum power doing these simple tasks while it has no problem running very demanding apps?

I'm referring to UI and animation lag and you can read all kind of reviews on the iPad 3 and it confirms an under performing device. The A5X was a poor choice for the retina screen. But hey if your happy with your iPad 3, that's all that matters, right?

the Infinity Blade 3 that runs on the iPad 3 isn't the same as the one that runs on the A7 processors. It's dumbed down graphically.

I think you missed the point. The iPad 3 has the power to do simple iOS animations. It's a software problem.

I have also an iPhone 5S and infinity blade III doesn't look significantly worse if it's supposedly dumbed down.

In case you guys forgot. The iPad 3 has the same quad core PowerVR GPU as the PSVita does but its clocked higher, the CPU is more powerful then the iPad 2 also. So yeah I'm pretty sure it can handle iOS7 animations, it plays games like Real Racing 3 and Asphalt 8 at FULL graphics just fine.
