My toggle switch is very firm, no give at all. I'd take it into Apple store and have them look at it, especially if it's inadvertently switching the setting.
I strongly believe it's part of the design but I'm confused when you said yours is firm? Or was it iPad 1 or 2 that you have? I tested it only on iPad 3s, and I believe I did tested on at least 1 iPad 2 as the Apple store still has few iPad 2s on display. All of them posses a bit of give on that switch when being pressed into the device.

I'd say that it's VERY easy to press the switch inward when the iPad is in the case due to the raised protective materials around the switch and harder to reach the switch unless one is using the fingernail to push it. Am I worrying about it now? No. But does it posses potential to get damaged with that kind of abuse over the time? So far haven't heard anyone with such problems reported though I'm supposed it's fine. But it doesn't mean it can take accidental abuse and not break.

I don't understand some of the antagonism on these forums. Some people may need to step back from the internet, get outside and play some dodgeball or something to work off deep-seated frustrations!:p
They probably feel good doing so. Somehow I feel sorry to these people.

Are we talking about orientation lock on-off which can also be used as silence switch or are you referring to the up and down volume button? My orientation lock does not give at all on my iPad 3, just slides back and forth which is what I was referring to.

Yes the orientation lock or mute switch. Guess you unit is an exception? I tested plenty of the iPads in Apple store that I stop after 6 or so units before the staffs look at me like I'm a freak. :D

Got an iPad recently and noticed a couple things about my silent switch:

1. If I press on it gently, it recesses slightly into the housing. It doesn't stay recessed after I stop applying pressure, though.

2. When in silent mode, I can push on it slightly and it will go into normal mode without actually physically moving very far. I do have to apply a small, steady force, so it's not like this is s omething that would happen while it's in a case. But it still kind of bothers me that I barely have to push it to switch it from silent to non-silent.

I know these things may sound trivial, but I spent a lot of money on this bad boy and I just want to make sure that these things are at least relatively normal.

Does anyone else experience these things (esp #2)? Is it worth contacting apple for a repair, or are these things completely normal?

I bought an iPad air recently and having the issue #2. Just wanted to know if you find out any solution or did you get it exchanged? I am not worried too much right now. Just concerned about future failure down the line as I plan to keep it for couple of years. Any input would be appreciated!

I have an iPad 2. Literally experience both things you mentioned. Hasn't gotten any worse and it's been two and a half years now. :)
