this would be the only feature they could add that would keep android manufacturers behind the curve for another year. Specs wise they can release a tablet next month that will be better than the iPad in some way but this requires software to make it work which Apple could do and Google could also but it would taken them forever to implement

I wonder how they would demonstrate it. I can't wait to see Tim Cook on stage.

This is one of those crazy things that actually makes sense, but seems like a long shot. It makes sense so much that you just wonder...hmmmm,...maybe....nooo...but....nooo, but what if...oh this has to be it. And then when the device is revealded, the feature is non existent and now you wanna beat the guys ars who got your hopes up. LOL.

EDIT: Reading the comments on this thread are REALLY pushing my hopes through the roof. Oh the OP is the MAN right now!!

Too much between the lines!

This technology looks really cool, but I think everyone is reading too much between the lines. I think everyone know's the line "We've got something for you to see" is a direct reference to the new retina display, but I think the "...And touch" line is just a reference to the iPad itself, as in we've got a new device for you to touch. If this tech was included in the iPad though, it would be awesome! :D

Although Zwei, i really dont wanna give a negative impression.
I really like the way you thought about it. But the tech is to young to be implanted into the ipad 3.

Dont think age has anything to do with it. Think its more along the lines of quality of that feature. If when I touch the d pad when playing a game and it actually feels like a real d pad and not just some spot thats vibrating, that to me is good quality and shows that the feature was ready for prime time.

This would really bring a new dimension to iOS. Imagine feeling all of the apps. For some reason, I imagine it would tickle my fingers... but using the keyboard would probably improve by miles..

Has anyone found any information on what is actually required for this technology?

Would there need to be a special display or is it a separate component that enhances traditional screens?

How drastically would this affect iOS coding?

The OP might be one product release ahead of his time for this one. I could definitely see them introducing this into the iPhone 5 with the release of iOS 6. Apple has typically pioneered features with the iPhone before trickling down to the iPad, and I would assume that system wide integration would require a major software update. Especially if the new release schedule has moved to the fall as opposed to the summer (which has been rumored back and forth), then Id bet good money the iPhone 5 will see this technology around October. The iPad 4 will get it Spring 2013.

It works by another layer under the glass. Not something thick. And a extra control unit to translate commands to that layer. Then there will be slight eletrical shocks to yout fingers, making your finger, and therefore your brain, thinking there is a bit of depth. So i think we can call this 3d...for your fingers only ^^.

Would ofcource have its limits.

In addition to the "touch" statement in the invitation, another point that bodes well for this actually happening is the implementation of such technology.

From the Senseg website: "...an ultra-thin durable coating on the touch interface that outputs tactile effects...can be applied to almost any surface, flat or curved, hard or soft, transparent or opaque. Because there are no moving parts in Senseg’s solution it can scale to almost any size of device."

Tell me Apple doesn't favor having cool technology PLUS being in control of design, which they would have in this case.

How would tactile feedback work with websites?

I don't doubt this will come to the iPad some day, but I feel like it isn't mature enough yet for Apple to roll with it.

Apple is well known for waiting until a technology is mature to include it in their products.

With all of that said, if it shows up on the iPad 3, I will be ecstatic.

Not really. They rolled with the touch screen almost immediately. Same with USB, Airport, unibody construction, ultrabooks... need I go on?

When you clicked on a button it would feel like a button. When you type on the keyboard it would give you a key like feel. Basically a cup of awesome.

Not to mention retina displays. Apple's putting one in an iPad next week and yet no one else has ever even seen a 9.7" retina display.

We've all been expecting an iPad retina display for so long that I think many of us (or maybe I'm just speaking for myself) have forgotten how crazy the display is going to be. I have no idea what it's going to look like.

Not that I think this is going to end up in the iPad 3, but when you think about the kinds of "industry defining" features that apple loves..this does seem like the exact thing that they would surprise us with. Plus this is not a feature that anybody would have been able to notice in the prototype leaks (assuming that the feedback doesn't require a separate cord)

In a hypothetical world where a Macrumors member cracked Apple's secrecy through logic and figured out that they were going to use a tactile display for the iPad 3, I think it makes strategic sense to debut Siri with the iPhone 4S and the tactile display for the iPad 3 and then give the corresponding feature to the next update of the respective device.

Apple can't debut a technology for the iPad and iPhone at the same time if it requires special hardware. Siri will make the biggest impact on the iPhone because it's a device that we talk to already. It has ideal uses for the iPad but for its debut, it had to be the iPhone. Tactile display would make the biggest impact on the iPad due to its large screen so it should debut on it and then carry over to the iPhone 6.

With all that said, I'm doubtful about the tactile display because I don't expect Apple/Tim Cook to wow us like that. Siri was leaked before the 4S came out so it wasn't all that surprising. This tactile display would come out of nowhere and news and rumors sites still haven't picked up on it.

Mountain Lion came out of nowhere just last month. Also, the mechanism for the tactile feedback wouldn't necessarily be noticed on isolated parts from china.

I'm not saying this feedback stuff should be expected, but I don't think it is completely out of the question.

But Mountain Lion is totally boring. Lol jk....but seriously...jk....no seriously...um.

Yeah, it came out of nowhere but I feel like that's very easily isolated since it's just code that can be kept on Apple's campus. I'm curious to know what the tactile feedback mechanism/panel looks like and if the iFixit guys would notice it if they were given an iPad 3 and nobody told them about it.

Tactile feedback would WOW the whole world except this tiny little group of Macrumors members who have seen this thread. That would be as legendary as the stolen/found iPhone 4 story.

This + pressure sensitivity of some kind + a fine nib would, for me, make this the ultimate tablet. a few years down the track it's what I'm hoping for.

I agree that if this is in ipad3 then it will wow the world. I dare to say id would be even be better then the retina display. But thinking about having this in the ipad3 is in dream world:(
