Big kudos to you for breaking this story. I definitely think it will be included today.

Yeah, this would make the 'see' and 'touch' part make a lot of sense- retina being the 'see', haptic being the 'touch'.

If this is what is introduced, and at the same price, then they have knocked it out of the park.

The iPad hd 3 hijklmnop has predictive typing. It doesn't even require a user. It's alive and spawns iPad minis when you buy two or more.

Are the folks at MR blind? They site the Guardian as the source of this story when it was one of their own members that broke the news. We all know it was Zweimeter. The device will be called IPad Touch.

So, speculation on a macrumors forum gets turned into a news article gets turned into a report on macrumors? All getting a bit circular. As others have said, see is the tv, touch is the iPad. Any other interpretation is way beyond wishful thinking.

http://senseg.com/technology/senseg-technology

The Tixel is the means by which Senseg’s technology transmits electro-vibration stimulus. It is an ultra-thin durable coating on the touch interface that outputs tactile effects. Senseg’s patented Tixel can be applied to almost any surface, flat or curved, hard or soft, transparent or opaque. Because there are no moving parts in Senseg’s solution it can scale to almost any size of device. Moreover, with no mechanical inertia Senseg tactile response is immediate.

As I said, maybe in two years. Retina display technology is unproven, is hard to produce in volume. Do you really believe that Apple would gamble by combining 2 non-consumer tested new technologies in the iPad? It also decreases the viewing quality.

I've not seen this mentioned yet. Digital Braille!? That would be a massive MASSIVE win for Apple.

Imagine how this well help people.

I gather Braille use is down a lot now there's text to speech. I've heard blind people complain about similar things (Braille iPhone cases) as not being useful or being something that would actually be designed by a blind person.

Another rumor tie-in...."catalogs"??

Beyond just the "iPad HD" rumor, there is also the intriguing addition of the "Catalogs" category in the App Store....

Using haptic technology, a user could actually feel the products for sale. Imagine actually feeling wool, cashmere, or suede clothing via a catalog app on the iPad. Now that would be MAGICAL!!

Physically, what would need to be done to the device?

Is it mostly a component that would be inside the case, unnoticeable from the outside besides the sensation of feeling something?

According to the website it works via a coating on the glass and static-electro impulses behind the glass to produce the haptic feedback, it works so good that a user can feel it before touching the glass.

Wow .. this does sound pretty cool .. and also looks like the were pretty advanced with their technology. If goes on TV in mid dec. last year however, I don't quite see it making it into this iPad generation quite yet. I would guess Apple would secure an exclusive deal with them shutting them down until the actual product is released.

Not to repeat myself .. but future looks awesome.

lets not get ahead of ourselves here. But that does sound absolutely mind blowing amazing. Is it really possible :)

Yes, exactly, waaaay too much wishful thinking/rampant speculation here right now, leading to the usual inevitable disappointment with what would otherwise have been considered a solid update.

Having said that, if "see" is the Apple TV, then it has to be more than just an output upgrade to 1080p. That would be like holding a media event to announce that all of your computers now came with 2 GB standard RAM.

$39 for a piece of Haptic film?

Backward compatible with iPads 1&2?

Also available in 3.5".... ?

Daaam.. Someone's gonna make a heap of money!

Doesn't require plastic screen. it sends a charge through a film attached to the screen (which if i understand correct can even be under the glass). That charge changes the friction and tricks you finger into feeling different surfaces.

Even though it seems extremely unlikely we will see this today "and touch" means something. And this is where the future is heading.

Agreed. As I mentioned earlier, I'm a bit skeptical re: this rumor, but hopeful.

That said, there are tie-ins with other rumors that would support Tim Cook's statement of providing products that will blow our minds.

If Apple was going to use the www.senseg.com technology, Apple would buy the company! Why would they want Senseg selling the technology to Andriod or Motorolla companies? Apple would have bought Senseg! ...and they haven't!

You really don't know they haven't. They could have an agreement to buy the company in place. And note that Apple is not required to announce "immaterial" acquisitions-- buying a company for <$100M would be immaterial to Apple's bottom line.

It'd be quite funny if the iPad engineering team were reading the rumours today, feeling all smug about the Retina iPad 3 they're about to release. When suddenly out of nowhere, everyone is expecting a haptic-feedback touchscreen. D'oh!! ;)

p.s. the best thing about the announcement today? The end of the hundreds of posts analysing what "see" and "touch" could mean!

So an extra coating ontop the screen, and means to produce electro-static pulses....seems to me that this could be true as iPad 3 is reported to be 1.5mm thicker....

Retina display + haptic coating + electro-static components = thicker iPad 3???

But wait! There's more.....

I've heard on really good authority (a trusted geek) that the iPad3 haptic technology introduced today, will also function as an intermodal teleportation device. Choose a location in Google Universe, select Apple's Dematerialize App, place the iPad3 on the floor (glass side up) and carefully stand on your new iPad3 and be transported to your chosen location!

Steve Jobs had worked on this for years and now he is waiting for us.

;)
