I think I'm starting to doubt this more now. To get hardware changes like this fully integrated takes ages, then you have months of testing and refinement. Let alone changes to the software to fully support it. Then you also have changes to the API to allow devs to take advantage of it.

You are right to doubt it. It is highly doubtful.... BUT:

When things like this has happened in the past (original transition to retina, new graphics, etc), Apple likes to invite a couple of trusted App makers to their campus for a couple weeks working with Apple Devs in house to ready demo's.

Then Shiller or Forstall will say, " and they were able to get this up and running in (whatever short period of time) we are seeding the build today and you have a week and a half before it ships to get ready."

This is going to happen today for the new display alone. whether or (probably not) they introduce heptic.

Apple has the motive and resources to do this today... You think Tim Cook and company don't want to blow the doors off the place in this keynote for obvious reasons. And I don't believe Apple just wants to upgrade enough to stay ahead, I think they want to crush.

It is doubtful, but it is possible.

Did anyone ever get this effect on the first aluminium macbook pros?
I often felt a kind of texture when touching the case around the trackpad, and could never work out what it was until a colleague told me it was an electric charge, it was a very strong sensation, not like a shock but like the casing was suddenly quite rough textured.

I'm sure I wasn't the only one that noticed this right?

It's also there on Powerbook G4's, I still feel it daily, if it's not connected to the mains it's gone though, it's just an electrical charge, maybe they got the idea from this.

would be great but since it didn't make it into the iPhone yet I doubt that it would be done at the much larger iPad.

Also there are already some big changes to the iPad (likely) like retina display, 4G, A5X, 1GB Ram. Adding a haptic display would probably make it too expensive and add too much challenge to the engineering for now.

That is wrong. IPad technology was developed first even though the iPhone appeared first on the market. So why would any new technology have to be tested first on the iPhone?

Maybe the touch is referencing to the new accessory? Rumored to be the new stylus.

If you're using a stylus, you failed at touching.

Did anyone else see this image on Senseg's site? Interesting that "iOS" is listed in the image...obviously Apple would have to build that screen type into the iPad in order for it to work......I have a good "feeling" about this......

Highly doubt that this is happening. Will it happen eventually? Absolutely. But the more likely scenario is that this gets designed into the 2013 or 2014 iPad. But I am certain that an iPad with this technology exists... In Jony Ive's design lab, covered by a black shroud.

iPhone 5

This haptics non-sense is exactly the same problem as the iPhone 5 rumors. Everyone was so sold on the iPhone 5 that hardly anyone even clapped in the audience with they announced the iPhone 4S.

We are creating the same problem. Now, everyone is going to be upset when haptic feedback isn't announced. The Retina display and 1GB of RAM is already a huge upgrade!

Don't let your wishes get in the way of actual progress.

A series of last-minute rumors and speculation are suggesting that the iPad 3 might include haptic technology that would give on-screen objects texture. The rumors have linked Finnish company Senseg with Apple and have been fueled by Apple's media event invitations carrying the tagline "We have something you really have to see. And touch."

This + Porn App = Win. Maybe they'll update the SI Swimsuit App, too.

Oh great! The rumors had been tame, and my CC was standing buy to purchase a comletely solid and awesome iPad 3 (or 2 HD). NOW THOUGH! Now if it doesn't have a haptic display I'm going to be majorly disappointed, and spend the next week in these forums raging on about how Apple is going downhill as a company and that the new model sucks. Huh, yeah, I am just kidding.

Please see here about implementation of Braille if you haven't already as it is a very important related topic and gives an insight at just what the technology could do. Also read the link in the thread RE: the technology being pixel accurate. It's a good read.

Not a chance in hell, remember apple like to drip feed us tech! A high res screen with better camera's and the CPU power to run it at current iPad 2 speeds is my guess ;)

I want to buy ipad 2
Siri: I found 3 apple stores.....

I want to buy iPhone 4s
Siri: I found 3 apple stores......

I want to buy ipad 3
Siri: ok here's your meeting at 3pm?

I saw it at MIC gadget and tried it.

Same results lol

Agreed. I was excited at first at the possibility, but after reading a little about it, there is no way its happening today. Like you say, Apple would want to test this thing for months.

who is to say that haven't been testing it for years?

I feel giddy

I know what you are saying, but I'm not sure it really matters.
So what if a lot of us feel really excited and then a bit later feel a sad, its only emotions and I don't think it really matters all that much does it?

It's like some people like going to see movies which take them on a roller coaster ride of emotions, they like that right? Otherwise they wouldn't spend time and money to go watch.

I guess what I'm really saying is that avoiding future disappointment by moderating your present emotional state, or reigning in your dreams and fantasies, isn't necessarily the best way to live all the time.

Eventually they are talking since June 2011:

To get the full picture you have to rewind back to June 2011. In an opinion piece, How Finland Brought Down Nokia & Revived Itself, for Trusted Reviews, the UK freelance journalist Gordon Kelly wrote: "Senseg is a haptics technology company founded just five years ago, the start of Nokia's decline. Unlike haptics until this point, Senseg is working on creating complex textures rather than simply buzzing your fingertips.

"The aim is to make a corrugated surface feel corrugated, a rough surface rough, a soft surface soft. The first products will ship by the end of this year and again Nokia is not Senseg's first port of call. 'We are currently working with a certain tablet maker based in Cupertino,' reveals Senseg senior vice president Ville Mäkinen."

That certain tablet maker from Cupertino that Makinen talked about is Apple. After all, how many others can you name?

The new iPad, whatever it is called, WILL have this feature. It's a gamechanger.

Not really. It's a neat feature but it changes very little since touchscreens exist very well without the need for finger tingling.

If Apple wants to introduce a game changing technology they should buy a battery tech company and reinvent the rechargeable. Batteries are the key to all future technology and it's an area that needs significant improvement.

An iPad or iPhone that will last a week with all guns blazing? That would be a game changer.

Man... Apple would make a killing and shock the world if this tech was in the iPad 3. It would be so hard to buy an iPad 3 for months! As awesome as this would be, I doubt it's coming. Especially if the iPad 3 only has the slightly upgraded processor.

This would get me to upgrade from my iPad 2. Other than that, the spec bumps aren't worth it.

this would be great but seems soooo sunned with all the other leaks. i have a blind niece and i REALLY hope this is true. i also think with over $5billion cash on hand the should be buying companies like senseg. if for no other reason than cockblocking google. those patents are valuable. at worst they could license the tech, at best the could block it from other companies. with that market cap they should be buying up as much tech as they can!!

Ever since Apple's press release, I've been wondering what they meant by "And touch." It always seemed out of place. Maybe I'm wrong, but it may be this technology.

Think about it, they say they have something they really want us to see. Obviously we've seen the past iPads, but this one is different because of the retina display. So why would they want us to touch this if it's just a regular touchscreen. We've been there, done that. It makes sense that there's something different about the touch technology.

I guess we'll see.
