That's not true. The only part of apps which will look just about the same as on the iPad 2 until they're updated, is images.

Which, on a screen of twice the pixels in the same space, looks awful. It's ok to talk about it.

There's four times the pixels, and it will look the same as it did on the iPad 2. You will notice it more though, as the rest of the app is really crisp.

Some look better than others.

10 of my existing apps were upgraded today, so be patient and soon they will all be set for the new iPad.

It's no big deal. Give it time.

Here are three iPhone Apps. Compared to the iPad 2, they look good.

Looks as if I've JB iPad 3 and used the RetinaPad extension.

GOOGLE+ is notorious for being terrible.

iPhone retina apps finally display at full resolution.... yay!

When pressing 2x/1x toggles between non-retina (and not zoomed) and retina.

Agreed. RetinaPad was always one of my first downloads after jailbreaking my iPad in the past. Looks like that hack is obsolete now! They aren't perfect, but no one could expect them to be. They do however look a lot better than the iPad/iPad2. I am assuming it is an upgrade for 5.1, so even the iPad/iPad2 will look much better, but I never updated my iPad to 5.1 before due to no jailbreak to verify that.

Sorry only for iPad 3. Still looks like crap on the previous iPads.

OK maybe my last image wasn't clear enough.

how about this:

This is what a zoomed in image of a W looks like on an iPad 1 or 2, or an iPhone, 3G, or 3GS:
Image

Now this is what happens when we display the exact same image on the new iPad, an iPhone 4 or 4S:
Image

now if we remove the gridlines:

iPad 1 and 2, and iPhone, 3G and 3GS:
Image

new iPad, iPhone 4 and 4S:
Image

EXACTLY THE SAME!

the close up photos posted further up, i don't know about you but i think the Retina one is better, at normal viewing distance, what you call "jaggies" to me give a much sharper crisper image seeing as there is a smaller gap between the pixels, it's the other one that looks blurriest to me.

OMG but I am sorry you seem dumb!

Apps with custom text fonts rather than using the native text scaling like the Wall Street Journal reader, Kindle reader, etc. look like crap because they're using fonts optimized for the iPad 1/2 on the 3.

One can only hope/imagine they will update shortly to correct this, as an app intended primarily for text reading with blocky, pixelized text is pretty annoying.

Non zoomed iPhone apps are still showing their retina optimised versions for me on the new iPad, it's not replacing all the images when you press the button.
Yes that appears so. I didn't even think how the new iPad would draw the 640x960 screen at 1:1 at that small size.
